  1. McCalvy corrected himself. Indeed at 39 pre-Wang.
  2. AZL Brewers 3, AZL Dodgers 2 AZL Brewers Boxscore The AZL Brewers are first half Central Division champions! Playoffs, baby. In an oddly low scoring affair, the Brewers were able to hang on to beat the second-place Dodgers by a score of 3-2. It was truly a make or break game - due to a rainout, the Brewers' team had played one less game than the Dodgers' team, and the Dodgers were only 0.5 game behind the Brewers coming into the game last night. So had the Dodgers won, they would have won the division too. There was no walkoff as the winning run was scored in the bottom of the fifth inning, but credit the Brewers' relievers who allowed one run over the final 7 innings of the game, and nothing after the 5th. Joaquin De La Cruz did the bulk of the heavy lifting, pitching innings 3 thru 6. He allowed a run on 4 hits, striking out 3. The 21 year old curveball-splitter specialist pitched to a 2.25 ERA in 28 July innings, good for 7th best in the league, and has a sparkling 2.52 ERA on the season (50 innings). De La Cruz also has one of the higher ground ball rates in the system, which makes him intriguing even though he does not throw all that hard. Due to being a little older, I wouldn't be shocked to see the Brewers move him up to Helena at some point in August, but we'll see. Brendan Murphy and Gabe Friese pitched a scoreless final 3 innings. This was Murphy's 4th pro outing after being drafted in the 4th round, and the first time he did not allow any runs. He also picked up his first professional hold, which I'm sure he'll always remember. 22 year old nondrafted free agent signee Gabe Friese concluded an unbelievable first half with 1 1/3 more scoreless innings to close out the game. Friese has pitched 17 1/3 earned run-less innings to begin his pro career. He's allowed a scant 7 hits, an even scant-er 2 walks, all while striking out 18. You'd have to think he's a candidate to move on up in August as well. Adrian Houser and Chase Williams made their second rehab appearances. As for the offense, another NDFA lead the way as Pat McInerney logged a single, a double, and a walk. It was the culmination of a fine first half for the big guy (listed at 6'5, 245), in which he lead the AZL in home runs (7), and was in the top six in doubles (10), RBI (23), walks (22), slugging (.576), and OPS (.977). 36th round pick and utility man extraordinaire Kenny Corey capped a fine first half as well with a double. He finished 2nd in the league in doubles (12), and batting average (.388). Tristen Lutz singled and scored what would turn out to be the game winning run. Lutz' first 58 pro plate appearances see him with a sweet slash of .288/.362/.615. AZL Brewers Game Log The winning rally: AZL Brewers Bottom of the 5th Pitching Change: Yeison Cespedes replaces Marshall Kasowski. Jesus Lujano flies out to left fielder Eric Peterson. Robert Henry hit by pitch. Kenny Corey flies out to left fielder Eric Peterson. Tristen Lutz singles on a ground ball to center fielder Kevin Aponte. Robert Henry to 3rd. Pat McInerney singles on a line drive to left fielder Eric Peterson. Robert Henry scores. Tristen Lutz to 3rd. Nick Egnatuk singles on a line drive to center fielder Kevin Aponte. Tristen Lutz scores. Pat McInerney to 2nd. Julian Jarrard strikes out swinging. Friese gets out of a potential game-tying jam: AZL Dodgers Top of the 8th Kevin Aponte singles on a ground ball to left fielder Jesus Lujano. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Marcus Chiu replaces Jeremy Arocho. Marcus Chiu called out on strikes. With Ramon Rodriguez batting, wild pitch by Brendan Murphy, Kevin Aponte to 2nd. Ramon Rodriguez flies out to center fielder Tristen Lutz. Kevin Aponte to 3rd. Pitching Change: Gabe Friese replaces Brendan Murphy. Jefrey Souffront pops out to first baseman Pat McInerney in foul territory.
  3. Lara has a significant lower leg injury, not that he has much of any trade value before getting hurt. Then again, it's Dombrowski so I guess you never know. Prospects are largely anathema to him.
  4. Just like Aaron Judge killed it last year.
  5. AZL Brewers 5, AZL Royals 3 AZL Brewers Boxscore Brewers maintain a tie for first place with the white-hot AZL Dodgers. The game saw two pro debuts for the Brewers: 16th round prep RHP Justin Bullock started the game and was relieved by 23rd round prep RHP Cam Robinson. 11th rounder Max Lazar pitched the third and fourth innings, making his second pro appearance. Puerto Rican lefty Wilfred Salaman pitched the fifth through seventh innings and picked off his ninth baserunner of the year. NDFA Gabe Friese ran his career opening 0.00 ERA to 16 innings. Tristen Lutz was the only Brewer with more than one hit - he logged a single and a double. Through 54 PAs as a pro, Lutz has a 1.016 OPS - not bad. Jesus Lujano stole his league-leading 15th and 16th bases of the season. Julian Jarrard had a double and Rob Henry had a triple for their lone hits. AZL Brewers Game Log
  6. Dubon's wRC+ is 113, which is obviously good, but also shows that the 840 OPS is inflated. So far he's not as good as he was last year at the plate. Something I hadn't noticed before - Dubon has a remarkably consistent BABIP throughout his career. Except for his breakout in AA last year, his BABIP has always been +/- .013 from .330.
  7. 16th round pick Justin Bullock making his pro debut as tonight's AZL starter.
  8. Not really sure why you're harping on correlation. I'd assume there would be some correlation.
  9. First, quit with the first part. If you can't communicate like an adult, don't communicate here. If you're actually wondering, yes, since I was about 4. Second, the preseason article ranked teams by overall farm system strength, not by that wacky Prospect Points thing. The Braves were ranked #1 on the preseason list, but were third in Prospect Points. The midseason article ranked teams solely by Prospect Points. The two different rankings are not congruous - they aren't even measuring the same thing. The Prospect Points thing looks to measure "impact" potential, while the human intuition-based rankings take into account depth as well as top tier talent. It's been stated over and over again, but the reason the Brewers have a very good farm system - as in, currently right now - is the exceptional amount of depth the team has. I'd have to check to see if it's still the case, but for quite awhile they lead all minor league systems in players with at least a 50 OFP (as awarded by MLB Pipeline staff). That's especially important to a small market like Milwaukee, who needs to be able to restock with internal quality. Internal quality is what will allow them to go out and use big league payroll flexibility when they need it. As for Carolina, this is a couple years old and formatted for crap, but Zebulon is in the 23rd percentile in terms of run environment. That's low. 10th percentile for home run enviornment. That's really, really low. It's true that the Carolina League is as a whole more hitter friendly than the FSL. However, Myrtle Beach, Zebulon and especially Wilmington have three of the poorer run environments in all of minor league baseball. Zebulon isn't Space Coast Stadium, but it is absolutely deflating enough to offensive stats that the output has to be adjusted for context.
  10. AZL Giants 7, AZL Brewers 6 AZL Brewers Boxscore Five runs given up late sink the Brewers again, and they go from way up in the division to being tied with the Dodgers for first. It would be a shame if they lost the first half crown after playing so well. AZL Brewers Game Log Another lead vanishes: AZL Giants Top of the 8th Defensive Substitution: Francisco Thomas replaces second baseman Julian Jarrard, batting 7th, playing second base. Nathanael Javier doubles (6) on a line drive to left fielder Jesus Lujano. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Nick Hill replaces Nathanael Javier. Nico Giarratano hit by pitch. With Kyle McPherson batting, Brent Diaz picks off Nick Hill at 2nd on throw to Yeison Coca. Kyle McPherson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Tristen Lutz. Nico Giarratano to 3rd. Pitching Change: Kody Rock replaces Michael Gonzalez. With Heliot Ramos batting, Nico Giarratano scores on a balk. Kyle McPherson advances to 2nd on a balk. Heliot Ramos doubles (8) on a fly ball to left fielder Jesus Lujano. Kyle McPherson scores. With Jose Layer batting, wild pitch by Kody Rock, Heliot Ramos to 3rd. Jose Layer lines out to right fielder Je'Von Ward. Jacob Gonzalez pops out to first baseman Pat McInerney in foul territory.
  11. Yes, but the guy was referring to farm system rankings (which is what the preseason link was), which the prospect point system is not, which is expressly stated in the article. And I never did hear about those other places that have the Brewers ranked in the lower half of farm systems...
  12. AZL Dodgers 8, AZL Brewers 3 AZL Brewers Boxscore With a win, the Brewers would have just about put the first half championship away, but instead the Dodgers pull to within a half game. Tristen Lutz, who after an extremely hot first few games has been struggling, hit his third home run. No Brewer had more than one hit. Julian Jarrard appeared in a game for the first time since July 9th. As mentioned a few days ago, Adrian Houser returned to the mound about 13 months to the day since his last start for Biloxi. He allowed an unearned run. Great to see him back. As mentioned earlier in the thread, Houser was relieved by Chase Williams, who we last saw 12 months ago in Wisconsin. Scroll up if you want to see my brief scouting report on him. AZL Brewers Game Log The wheels come off: AZL Dodgers Bottom of the 6th Defensive Substitution: Julio Mendez replaces second baseman Julian Jarrard, batting 6th, playing second base. Eric Meza homers (1) on a fly ball to right field. Alvaro Rubi reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Yeison Coca. Felix Osorio singles on a line drive to left fielder Jesus Lujano. Alvaro Rubi to 2nd. Marcus Chiu called out on strikes. Pascal Amon singles on a line drive to left fielder Jesus Lujano. Alvaro Rubi scores. Felix Osorio scores. Pascal Amon to 3rd. Fielding error by left fielder Jesus Lujano. Pitching Change: Branden Nunn replaces Christian Taugner. Jair Camargo reaches on a fielder's choice out, shortstop Yeison Coca to catcher Robie Rojas to third baseman Nick Egnatuk. Pascal Amon out at home. Jair Camargo to 2nd on the throw. Jefrey Souffront singles on a line drive to right fielder Je'Von Ward. Jair Camargo scores. Eric Peterson walks. Jefrey Souffront to 2nd. Jacob Amaya walks. Jefrey Souffront to 3rd. Eric Peterson to 2nd. Eric Meza singles on a ground ball to center fielder Tristen Lutz. Jefrey Souffront scores. Eric Peterson scores. Jacob Amaya to 3rd. Alvaro Rubi flies out to right fielder Je'Von Ward.
  13. Haniger also completely reworked his swing, and it remains to be seen if he'll have long term major league impact. I get your point, but there was an excellent chance that he would have not amounted to much had he stayed in Milwaukee.
  14. 35th round pick last year, spent some time in Appleton before going down with an injury. Throws in the low-middle 90s and has a plus slider. A legit relief prospect.
  15. Assuming you're talking about that Prospect Points thing, they state this within the article: Also, that's (not even) one. You said more than one.
  16. Thankfully the latter half of the sentence took a different direction.
  17. BTW, people keep bringing up Ryan Cordell as a trade piece - he's been out for a month now with a shoulder injury. His trade value may be significantly compromised at the moment.
  18. Which may well be true, but if I'm Stearns and if that's the ask for Gray, I am using some colorful language with Billy Beane.
  19. A real, live AZL rainout. Game is postponed to a date TBD.
  20. I have asked a couple of people and not received a response. That he's not on the AZL roster's 60-day DL at least offers a glimmer of hope that he may return this season.
  21. Final: Helena 10, Idaho Falls 5 Three Homers Power Brewers to 10-5 Win Martinez, Henry and Feliciano all go deep as Brewers split series with Chukars By Garrett Greene / Helena Brewers Helena Box Score Like so many other prospects in the Brewers' system this year, Payton Henry is having a good season if you can get past the batting average. Despite hitting .225, Henry has an OPS of .822 and an ISO of .236. Granted in the inflated offensive environment of the Pioneer League, that isn't super impressive, but you'll sure take it from a young catcher. Henry was one of three Brewers to hit long balls on Sunday. He hit his fifth on the year. Henry was joined by the hulking Jay Feliciano (also his fifth), and Yeraldy Martinez (his fourth). The contact-challenged Martinez had three hits, which is the first time he's done that this year, and matched his total from last year. Nelson Hernandez, the Brewers' de facto ace, pitched well save for surrendering four runs in the fourth inning. Hernandez works fast and has a good change-up, but neither his change-up nor his breaking ball is an out pitch. Cody Beckman pitched around a few hits in the ninth and ran his career opening run-less streak to 8 innings. Helena Game Log Big/efficient third inning: Helena Bottom of the 3rd Chad McClanahan called out on strikes. KJ Harrison walks. Payton Henry walks. KJ Harrison to 2nd. Jay Feliciano homers (5) on a fly ball to left field. KJ Harrison scores. Payton Henry scores. Zach Clark walks. Franly Mallen bunt pops out to first baseman Robby Rinn in foul territory. With Yerald Martinez batting, Zach Clark steals (6) 2nd base. Yerald Martinez homers (4) on a fly ball to left field. Zach Clark scores. Jose Gomez grounds out, shortstop Julio Gonzalez to first baseman Robby Rinn.
  22. AZL Brewers 7, AZL Mariners 6 AZL Brewers Boxscore Baby Brewers win again, magic number decreases to 5. Kenny Corey and Robie Rojas lead the offense with 3 hits apiece. Rojas also drew a walk and threw out of the two runners trying to steal off of him. His CS% on the year remains at 50%. Corey hit a double, as did Pat McInerney. LG Castillo got his first pro hit. 4th rounder Brendan Murphy got the start and struggled once again. The Brewers might be having him work on something so it's impossible to read too much into it. Joaquin De La Cruz pitched 4 innings and allowed only a run on 2 hits, while striking out 5. He also walked 5, but shh. AZL Brewers Game Log All seven runs came early, in the second and third: AZL Brewers Top of the 2nd Robie Rojas singles on a fly ball to center fielder Jack Larsen. Je'Von Ward singles on a fly ball to center fielder Jack Larsen. Robie Rojas to 3rd. Leugim Castillo singles on a fly ball to center fielder Jack Larsen. Robie Rojas scores. Je'Von Ward to 2nd. Francisco Thomas out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Feliberto Bonilla to first baseman Caleb Eldridge. Je'Von Ward to 3rd. Leugim Castillo to 2nd. Yeison Coca singles on a line drive to center fielder Jack Larsen. Je'Von Ward scores. Leugim Castillo scores. With Jesus Lujano batting, wild pitch by Feliberto Bonilla, Yeison Coca to 2nd. Jesus Lujano grounds out, second baseman Shawn O'Malley to first baseman Caleb Eldridge. Yeison Coca to 3rd. Robert Henry flies out to right fielder Ryan Garcia. AZL Brewers Top of the 3rd Kenny Corey doubles (11) on a fly ball to center fielder Jack Larsen. Pat McInerney doubles (9) on a ground ball to left fielder DeAires Moses. Kenny Corey scores. Robie Rojas singles on a fly ball to center fielder Jack Larsen. Pat McInerney scores. Je'Von Ward singles on a line drive to right fielder Ryan Garcia. Robie Rojas to 3rd. With Leugim Castillo batting, Je'Von Ward steals (2) 2nd base. With Leugim Castillo batting, wild pitch by Feliberto Bonilla, Robie Rojas scores. Je'Von Ward to 3rd. Leugim Castillo walks. Pitching Change: Scott Boches replaces Feliberto Bonilla. With Francisco Thomas batting, Leugim Castillo caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Ismerling Mota to shortstop Louis Boyd. Francisco Thomas singles on a line drive to left fielder DeAires Moses. Je'Von Ward scores. Yeison Coca strikes out swinging. Jesus Lujano strikes out swinging.
