  1. SS - Ransom has 40 K in 78 ABs. Izturis has a .471 OPS. I can't believe I want Maysonet in there. At Ransom can take a walk on occasion. I don't know who to put there, but it's just killing this team.
  2. Yeah, it Caple certainly is doing his best to cheerlead others into beating Miller Park. I find it pretty funny it's backfiring.
  3. John heyman confirms the report. Don't get to excited, brewer fans.
  4. He's had OBP of .340, .356 and .312 over the past three years. I don't think it's wise to only look at this year (although I believe that it should be weighed more heavily than past seasons). A good month and he can suddenly have a .350 OBP. I guess you have to look at him - look at the scouting reports, examine other stats, watch his at bats - and determine if he's on the 'decline'. Is a .312 OBP what you anticipate going forward? If so, he's definitely not worth it. I suppose playing the waiting game is best. See how he plays out 2012. And how your other assets in the minors play out. Another point -- if you don't extend him, there are usually options available in that same $10 million/year area. Examples include Cudyer, LaRoche, Willingham, etc. So if you're looking for a 2-3 year stop gap, you can always dip into the FA market. You certainly don't want to saddle yourself with an unnecessary long term contract if it can be avoided.
  5. Hart said he wants to stay beyond 2013 and he's amenable to talking about a longer contract. Here's the exact words: "I'm only signed through next year, so I don't know what their plan might be. I'd like to be here longer than that. I'd be willing to listen to anything they have to say. I don't think it's something that they've even thought of at this point." http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/hart-looking-good-so-far-at-1st-base-jk5rtqe-159965205.html I guess a lot comes down to what the team thinks of Gamel and Hunter Morris long term (I don't know of any other players who'd project as first basemen in our organization). Gamel has potential, but he hasn't seized the moment when he's had the chance. And Morris is having a solid season at AA - showing a lot of progress as a hitter - but he's not a certainty by any means.
  6. The Rays claimed Conrad. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/06/rays-claim-brooks-conrad.html
  7. A bit disappointed. I was looking forward to July so we could see Brooks' 4th hit.
  8. We owe Wolf $10 million next year or a $2 million buyout. Think about Wolf this way - if he's a FA, is he worth $8 million (which is what his option essentially costs us)? I'd say no. I would think you could take $8 million and spend it more wisely. The following guys signed for well below $8 million. Capuano Harang Saunders Maholm Bedard Colon Chen Garcia I probably missed some guys too. And yes, a lot of those guys are (were) injury risks. A couple got two year deals, but at a reasonable annual salary. But Wolf has a 5.00+ ERA. Unless he improves it, no one is going to want to pay him $8 million a year. You can get a back-of-the-rotation guy for much cheaper than that.
  9. Gonzalez won't be under contract for 2013. His 2013 salary didn't activate without reaching a high number of plate appearances. So he'll be a FA. If he looks okay, the Crew (or any other team) may offer him a low salary with incentives type deal. But the $4+ million deal is gone. If we don't have anyone else available, we could certainly do that. I guess it depend on how his knee is doing. Not something I'd gamble big on.
  10. I think he'll make it. A great defenders. 10 or so gold gloves. Almost 3000 hits. I think that will be enough for him. And, honestly, people seem to like the guy. As silly as it seems, that will help. Does he really deserve it? Not sure. He was more steady than great. Only one year hitting over .300. I'll say the writers will give him the nod when the time comes.
  11. If Nyjer has a bad/mediocre year, I'd totally let him go in the off season. I love the guy. He's got great energy and brings some attitude (which can be good and bad - but I think the good outweighs the bad with him). But he's not worth the money he'd make in 2013. Not only his batting average declining, so are his extra base hits. The guy has 3 doubles and 2 HR in 35 hits. And he still has an atrocious walk rate. He'll be 32 next month - not old, but not young either (for a baseball player). He makes $2.35 million this year. I'd rather pay Schafer a fraction of that, and let him and Gomez (who we have for one more year) handle CF (with Aoki handling RF and Corey going to 1B).
  12. Totally agree. Votto has been amazing this year. Can't hurt that the Reds are winning too.
  13. Well, I'll say the obvious - that was needed. Well done. Maldanado, Ax, Loe, Braun. We needed that big time.
  14. TooLiveBrew, this is a nice point. Uggla hit .185 before the all star break. He .296 after the break. Rickie has a history of production. He's not at an age where he should be declining so quickly. History says he should turn it around. The question is when. Dunn's struggles last all year. Uggla was able to come back after the break and really dial it up. Let's hope Rickie can do the same.
  15. Maysonets decision to throw the ball to 2nd was awful. Nothing good comes from that. Hold the ball. Dont give the fast guy at 3rd a chance to score.
  16. Interesting article by Jayson Stark about the decline of scoring in baseball - and the rise of the pitcher. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8048897/the-age-pitcher-how-got-here-mlb It's a good read. Steroids is the obvious answer, but I really liked how he got into this being the Information Age - how pitchers can know in seconds what happens when you throw a slider to a particular batter in a particular spot over the last five years or whatever crazy thing you want to know. Personally, I don't mind less scoring. I might lament and complain and moan about our batters, but I love a good pitchers dual.
  17. Coming into tonight, our relievers have the 2nd worst era in baseball, given up the 4th most walks, and have the 2nd worst batting average. And they got worse. Pathetic.
  18. Do the Brewers extend Corey Hart beyond 2013? What if you could do a 3-year deal. It would cover his age 32-34 seasons. That wouldn't put the team too deep of a commitment. This last off season, Cuddyer (who is 33) got $11.5 million a year for three years. Ethier just got a five year deal - $17 million a year, covering ages 31-35. Am I wrong to put Hart between those two - but closer to Cuddyer? I'm thinking 3 years, $36-39 million. Maybe with an option. The team could move him to 1B permanently. It blocks Hunter Morris - an okay prospect, but nothing special. I don't think we have any stud 1B coming up through the minors, so it fills a hole for the next four years. Is Hart worth that? My gut tells me no. But he's been pretty productive the last few years - although his batting average has slipped this year. Still, he's on pace for about a 3.0 WAR this year - after getting 4.2 and 3.7 the previous two seasons (all per Fangraphs). You could, of course, look to deal Hart for young (and cheap) talent. Just curious as to what people think.
  19. I really feel like this off season is going to mimick the 2008 off-season and there will be a TON of horrible contracts put out there. I really hope DM avoids the mid level dregs and only goes after the high end guys. This is a good point. You just gotta wonder what sort of crazy money is going to be thrown around. Let's just hope we don't get caught up in it and make another Suppan signing.
  20. Looks like a overpay. Plus there's a sixth year option of some kind. The guy is solid, but he's not great - which is what you expect for $17 million a year. He's 30, meaning he's not likely to suddenly get better. If anything, he's likely to get worse over the length of the contract. Perhaps I'm wrong, and maybe not taking into account anticipated revenue growth. But This seems like an overpay by $5 milliion a year or so. I guess better the Dodgers than us for a deal like this. They can probably afford the deal.
  21. john, i think you're right on all counts here. Illitch would probably pay for Greinke. But Mark A hasn't shown he's the kind of guy who gives up. There's still way too much baseball to play before we throw in the towel.
