1. The team is unlikely to spend another $6 million or whatever it takes to get Lee. 2. You only block a young player who can probably come close to Lee's performance - for a 1/2 of the price. 3. Our team is really right handed at this time, and having Gamel and Green getting some ABs will help balance things. Add Lee only compounds this problem. 4. We have an old SS and 3B - don't add an even older 1B. Injuries and production dropoff are dangers for all of these guys. 5. Lee offers little upside, and more a growing downside. This isn't the .320, 35 HR hitting Derrick Lee. It's the .260 or .270, 18 HR Lee. There's nothing wrong with his production - but it's unlikely to suddenly get better at his age. Gamel offers upside as a younger player. Yes, he's a risk. He could hit .250 with 10 HR. But he could also hit .300 with 20 HR. We're unlikely to get that from Lee. In the end, go with your inexpensive guy with the bigger upside. Yes, there's a risk, but there's also great reward. And even if he doesn't hit .300 or get 25 HR, if Gamel can hit average, then he provides a lot of value since he only costs league minimum.
