  1. http://www.mlbtraderumors...t-with-clint-barmes.html I get worried seeing this kind of thing: Barmes told McTaggart the Brewers also offered a two-year deal, but they preferred to wait until the Prince Fielder situation was resolved before making any moves. I worry the Brewers will let opportunities pass them by as they wait out Fielder. I guess, maybe, they think they have a real shot at him. I just hate that kind of paralysis. Barmes isn't the greatest player by any means, but he would have been a solid addition. He was getting pricey, but it wasn't outrageous for a short term commitment.
  2. I'm afraid we are going to get a Yuni at veteran's minimum and then a flyer on some AAA guy or something like that. They'll get someone they hope can be okay, but have Yuni in their back pocket to step in.
  3. I figured Barmes was in the $4-5 million range, so it's a bit of an overpay in my book. But all the same, I'd rather spend $5.5 or so on Barmes than bring back yuni at $1 million. Maybe Doug feels that furcal or someone else is available that he is going to spend his money on. But I liked Barmes a lot. I think he would have fit well.
  4. maybe we could tweak the cubbies by hiring sandberg as our hitting coach.
  5. I think Melvin loved having a 'second closer' on the team. I wouldn't be shocked if he splurged on a a guy who's been a successful closer, such as Street (obviously a trade), Lidge, Capps, Nathan, Francisco, Broxton. I'd love to have a guy like Broxton or Lidge - guys coming off injuries but potentially really good - come in on a one year deal and let them set up.
  6. I don't think Wolf is a great pitcher, but the 2013 option might be valuable if Marcum and Greinke don't resign after 2012 - and Wolf continues to pitch well. Right now we have Gallardo and Narveson under control for 2013. We have a group of players that might be ready in 2013 - Fiers, Peralta, Jungmann, Bradley - but there are no promises with young players. And Jungmann and Bradley haven't even pitched - so it might be a lot to count on them this early. Not to mention that injuries could sideline any of these players. Thus, if Wolf is still pitching well, there may be a desire to exercise that 2013 option. The option is for $10 million - with a $1.5 million buyout. So, would Wolf be worth $8.5 million on the open market in 2013? Not sure, but if he pitches in 2012 like he did in 2011, and we lose Marcum and Greinke, he may be with the team another year. It's nice that we have the option available.
  7. Figgins was absolutely, brutally terrible in 2011. He should not cost anything. To even consider giving back decent, cheap players is a non starter. The only way you take Figgins is if you get most of his contract paid by Seattle. I believe he'll make around $10 million per year in 2012 and 2013 (and there's an option of some kind, if I recall). I could see taking on $2-3 million on the chance he can rebound, but at 34 that's not a likely scenario. Perhaps you take a little more on if they sweeten the offer - give us Ryan to play SS. But otherwise, the Mariners are lucky to get a live body sent to them, even if they pay 70% of Chone's salary. I loved Figgins back in 2009. Thought he would be perfect at 3B for the Crew. He got on base. Good leadoff guy. He played great defense at 3B. I guess the only thing I can say is that if he could rebound to his 2010 performance, he'd be better than McGehee was last year. But that's not much. I would think you could do that with Green (or McGehee himself, if he could rebound a bit).
  8. Kotsay did a nice call to doug about going to San Diego. It's his home and he wanted to jump at the chance to play there. Thanked doug and the team! Said he and his family loved it. But this is what he wanted. http://brewersbeat.mlblog...ext-ss-target-is-barmes/
  9. Makes him intriguing.I'm game. Give him a try. I like thinking differently. I don't trust Furcal. 34, injuries, inconsistent performances. Scares me. Although we could do worse. If you did go with Furcal I'd want a good back up - like Hairston - to fill in when the inevitable injury comes up. Between Barmes and Furcal I guess I lean Barmes, because I see him as a little more safe - but not with Furcal's upside. I'd be okay with either.
  10. If we could only have someone sign Yuni so that threat isn't haunting us. However, Kotsay was serviceable as a pinch hitter and once-in-a-blue-moon starter. He just played too much last year, especially when there were other options available. I would have been okay with him in 2012 if he was strictly regulated to 5th OF/PH status. But time to move on. I hope Gindl or Schafer gets a chance at his job.
  11. If I'm correct, Carlos' contract will be done by after next season - so he doesn't get to DH next year. That's a gain for the Crew.
  12. The infielder market continues to evolve with 2B Mark Ellis joining the dodgers. http://www.mlbtraderumors...ent-with-mark-ellis.html Each of these signings will affect the Brewers as they look at a SS, plus a utility infielder type, such as Hairston. The market seems to be pretty lucrative. Thankfully, there are have not been any 3 years deals for these kinds of players.
  13. I don't know much about Evans, but briggs is right in that this is the kind of player the team can use if we go with Gamel next year at 1B (or a player like Pena, who has pretty drastic splits). McGehee could, potentially, be that guy, but he was terrible against lefties last season. And at $3 million, he becomes expensive. I think we can be smart and get someone how can mash lefties, maybe play 1B as well as corner OF or 3B. Just know the guy is going to get 20-30 starts at 1B, maybe a few somewhere else, pinch hit, etc. 200 ABs is it.
  14. 2 years, $7 million. I was hoping he wouldn't get that much. He's getting older (38 in feb), but his skill set should maintain well enough. 2 years is a bit tough at that age.
  15. I'm guessing it's because his career .356 OBP, and his ability to play 2b, SS, 3b, OF all pretty well. He doesn't offer power, but seems to still have plenty to offer. I don't get why you wouldn't want him. I wouldn't mind Carroll for all the reasons you cited. But I would have liked them to go after Hairston first. I'm concerned about Carroll's age (38 in Feb), and like Hairston better as a defender. Still, Carroll would be okay to have.
  16. Reportedly 4 years and $50 million. http://www.mlbtraderumors...-jonathan-papelbon-.html Edit: I added the years and numbers.
  17. He gets on base. He's versatile. Those are some nice traits, even if he is lacking in other areas (such as power).
  18. Barajas is a decent player. Power. Average defense. He's slow and doesn't get on base, so he's limited. And at 36, he's getting up there. He's a 1 WAR type guy. In the baseball world, a guy like this gets around $2-2.5 million. Maybe $3 million. Pirates overpaid. Perhaps that's what it took to get him to sign.
  19. The Pirates get Barajas for $4 million and a $3.5 million option in 2013. Seems a bit of an overpay. http://www.mlbtraderumors...es-sign-rod-barajas.html
  20. Ramos is alive. Rafael Rojas tweet That's a start.
  21. Heck, you can even bring Rogers along slowly. Put him on a rigid schedule - not a bad idea with a guy with his injury issues. Pitch him every third game for one inning. That's 54 games. 54 innings. It's not like you're asking for 100 innings out of the guy. Let him come in and just unload for 20 pitches or whatever. I know in the past the team has said things along the lines that starting was easier on him because it allowed a more structured schedule. I don't want to baby the guy too much, but even 50-60 innings of a good reliever offers some value. Better than him just sitting on the IR. And as the season goes along, maybe he gets comfortable in the role and you can pitch him in different situations (assuming he's doing well).
  22. see how Maldanado works out. If they feel he's ready with the bat - they'll trade kottaras. Someone would probably want him. Didn't the Brewers expose him for free this last season while he was at minimum wage and no team took him? This year he will be first-year-arby priced if the Brewers accept that. Now that you mention it, that is probably correct. You can alway send kottaras to AAA if no one wants him. he's good insurance. or make the move now. i guess the team has to decide where they want to go.
  23. I like the idea of Rogers being a relief pitcher. At least for now. Bring him in to camp and say, "Mark, you've got 2 pitches. That's all you need to focus on." Then just get him into a groove of throwing gas for 20-25 pitches, then punch out. See how that works for him.
  24. yeah, i should have said trade mcgehee - or cut him if no takers. If we can trade him, it won't be for much. If we don't want the guy, no one else is bound to give up much for him. And remember, if someone trades for him, they take on his salary - which could reach up toward $3 million. I don't know if anyone would want that.
  25. I know the difference is "only" $400K, but ideally they make their decision on Kottaras before they arby settle at ~ $800K. i don't think money will be the big deal with kottaras, but instead the desire to have a better defensive catcher - which Maldanado is. I think they'll take them both to spring training and see how Maldanado works out. If they feel he's ready with the bat - they'll trade kottaras. Someone would probably want him. Butif Maldanado needs more time, you go with George.
