  1. I'm on the Gamel bandwagon. Unless the club just has no confidence in him, I'd just give it to him and roll the dice. Gamel would be cheap. It would allow us financial flexibility to sign Marcum and Greinke. His defense has to be better than prince's. And combine that with a better SS, we'd do okay. I know replacing Prince's production is going to be hard. But we can do it through better defense at SS and 1B (and maybe 3B), better production from 3B (if we could get Casey to rebound to a .750 OPS, or have Green produce that, we'd be talking a huge upgrade of 2011), and by getting a solid performance from Gamel - I don't think an .800 OPS is out of reach. These are all gambles. But if you sink $15-20 million in a Reyes - every year for the next 5-6 years - that's an even bigger gamble. If Gamel fails, you have the flexibility to make a move.
  2. Gamel could probably play either at least as well defensively as Hart. SS is the one position we really can't fill internally right now and don't have a current good option.I'm on the Barmes bandwagon for this. Doesn't cost a draft pick. Plays very good defense. Hits as well if not better than Yuni (he had 23 HR as recently as 2009 - not that I think he'll do that). We could probably get him on a 2-3 year deal for a reasonable rate (just guessing - but maybe $4 million annually?).
  3. You shouldn't limit yourself to 1B when considering this question. We could, conceivably, move Hart to 1B and add an OF - if that's what is the best option.
  4. based strictly on stats, it's Kemp. plus he plays a more demanding position. however, some people will discount him because he's not on a winning team. whether that's right or wrong is beside the point. some voters will look at the numbers and see two players fairly close across the board, and they'll look at that person's team, and they'll pick braunie because he's lead his team to the playoffs. again, whether that is how it should be doesn't matter. it will simply be the fact. the key will be how many of these kinds of voters exist. but i think enough of them to give the vote to braunie. if ryan can win the batting title, that might do it for him. on the other hand, if kemp could continue his tear and win the triple crown, it would be hard to ignore him.
  5. A walk is better than a hit!? Yes, that's exactly what stat geeks so. Or maybe it's just a line people like to attribute to others to denigrate them and their ideas.
  6. Man, I watched those terrible 3 Ninja movies so many times. My son loved them. But it made for great memories.

  13. Yeah, we can't give luc a free pass. He has been struggling too. He did this last year, if I recall. He may just be wearing down a bit.
  14. Took me a while to remember where I saw this, but Tom Haudricourt tweeted back on 9/6 about asking Roenicke about this, or at least a similar topic. In response to: Why is Lucroy not batting 6th? He's .326 w/ RISP and Yuni is 100 points lower! What gives??? That's a very good question. It makes no sense whatsoever. We've asked Roenicke about it many times and gotten nowhere. Also, TH doesn't mince words about Betancourt. And remember, this is the guy that was talking down his nose to people who pointed out how terrible YB is immediately after the acquisition. this is great. i mean, no one seems to be calling out the coaching staff for playing these guys (expect fans). I realize that writers need to keep good relations with players and management. But the facts are showing mcgehee and betancourt to be terrible, and as we talk about playoffs, it makes me cringe that we aren't considering options.
  15. Impressions of Roenicke? I did a great impression of Roenicke tonight. I watched an episode of Hee Haw for the 150th straight night in anticipation that it will actually turn out funny. When my wife and kids protested, I pointed out the last time we watched something new, it wasn't any good, so therefore, anything new will be bad. When my kids continued to argue, I ordered them to lay down a bunt and sent them to bed. By the way, Minnie Pearl still has the sales tag on her hat. Maybe she'll notice it in tomorrow's episode.
  16. I just hope the club says 'Mat, the job is yours. Show up in shape. Show up ready to play. Show initiative. Show up ready to seize the day.' If the club doesn't think he can do it, then deal him and find another option.
  17. The definition of insanity is continuing to do the same thing over and over, and then expecting different results. I wouldn't mind a day off for Luc as well as Yuni and Casey. All of these guys have been struggling at the plate. You could load up the offense with some extra lefties - Green, Kotaras. Get JHJ some playing time at SS. Heck, even give Counsel the start. guess not. sigh.
  18. this would be awesome to attend since i live in madison, but i have a work obligation to 8:00 or so. doesn't quite work for me.
  19. I like the title of the article: Dubious injury could end Holliday's seasonThe title implies that the injury is shady in some fashion. I like the injury-prone comment - like he could do anything about appendicitis.
  20. I'm no Brad Pitt, but Andy Etchebarren is without a doubt one of the ugliest people I've ever seen. That unibrow thing you're talking about was historic. hey, that's a good picture of him. i always remember this baseball card: http://stratomaticbaseballvillage.lefora.com/composition/attachment/819ad1b185815485142b0790a78b6414/650080/b__andy_etchebarren_77.jpg?thumb=1
  21. i wonder if Greinke will want to even talk about an extension until after 2012. he seems more interested in being in a comfortable situation - which includes winning. I wonder if he'd feel 'trapped' by a longer term deal. he doesn't seem obsessed with money. he might just want to wait, see how the team looks going into 2013, before committing.

  23. I liked that too. He was right, his first 4 ABs were terrible and the misjudged ball in the OF was worse. Thankfully, he made up for it. yeah, he manned up, admitted he sucked, didn't back away from his bad play. Accept responsibility - gotta love it. And then to ignore the issues and step up and end it. awesome.
