  1. Chavis scares me due to the PED stuff. Plus his strikeout rate is really high (33%). He seemed like an okay prospect - but nothing special. I just don't know how valuable he will be. Benintendi really intrigues me, but his decline is worrisome. I know he struggled last year, so we'd have to be sure he's recovered from whatever injuries were bothering him. I also hate giving up on Corey with his trade value so low.
  2. Amen. I hope people can read this and take it to heart. Thanks.
  3. Wow. Cole is going to be looking at 8-years/$300M.
  4. To be honest, I don't think it wise to dream on Ryu or Donaldson either. I continue dreaming of Strasburg in our rotation, knowing full well it is a dream... Buit what if? I would love a guy like Strasburg as well. But with the prices of premium players, I'm very skeptical. I see Strasburg getting $30M - or more - per year. And for six or more seasons. I just don't see us treading into those waters - where we put 1/4 of our payroll into one player. If it was for just 2-3 years - I could see it. But six is hard to fathom. But hey, we can dream for now.
  5. At this time, I was thinking Taylor had the inside track for our #5 OF. But Keon is a nice option if something happens to Taylor.
  6. So you don't think Strasburg couldn't be had for about 4/120?? 5 for 150?? The way things are going -- probably not. 5/150 is probably the minimum right now. Six and $180 is more realistic.
  7. Meanwhile Hector Gomez appears to think enough of the sports reporter that announced it initially to also put it out there. In Spanish, FrankCastillo22 means HighHeat19.
  8. Brewers reportedly talked to Lyles -- but nothing materialized. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/white-sox-blue-jays-brewers-twins-among-runners-up-for-jordan-lyles.html
  9. Correct. Game 2, we lost 5-4. In the 8th, Pete Ladd walked two straight batters - walking in the winning run. Fingers doesn't do that. Now, there's no guarantee we would have ultimately won the game. But it's unlikely we give away a run at that time if Fingers is available. Game 7, we lost 6-3. We gave 3 runs in the 6th, and 2 more in 8th. I don't know if Fingers would have mattered here, since it was still early - but you never know.
  10. I think it was simply time in Milwaukee and impact. Sutton was here only a little more than two years. Just not that long of a time. And he was on the tail end of his career when in Milwaukee. It's not like he was a Cy Young candidate while pitching for us. Yes, he was good, but not great. Fingers was in Milwaukee for five seasons (one of those years he was injured, so he only played four years with the Brewers), but won an MVP and a Cy Young while here, and was an all-star twice. The two had different personalities as well. Fingers just had a charisma to him that made people love the guy.
  11. There were two Lyles threads started at the same time, so I merged them, in case anyone was wondering. Therefore, there might be some odd, out of order posts in the first page or two.
  12. $8M per year is a little rich. I really don't trust Lyles all that much, but that's just a gut instinct. He pitched well for us, so I would have been fine bringing him back. I can see passing on him at this price, but it wouldn't have been awful. Good for Lyles.
  13. I've said before that Bumgarner's home/road splits scare me. Last year at home OPS against him was .619. On the road, it was .840. ERA the last three years at home: 2.63. On the road: 4.61. His ability to eat innings is nice, but I wonder if he's being left in too long. Stats show that he has been hit harder and harder as he faced hitters a 2nd and 3rd time. The following covers 2017-2019: 1st time through: .560 OPS 2nd time through: .772 OPS 3rd time through: .852 OPS I honestly don't know if MadBum is a good idea at $15-17M (or more) per year. I like the idea of a guy who can actually throw more than 150 innings. But who knows how that will hold up outside of SF.
  14. This is exactly my take. We can get proven 'okay' results on the open market. But we are the kind of club that needs to take some risks here and there. Smith is by no means a sure thing. Otherwise, he'd cost a ton to get. But right now, he's stuck as a reserve - and that won't change with a 50-HR guy ahead of you. Now is the time to get him - assuming the club thinks he's worth it.
  15. Kendrick, who a lot of people have expressed interest in on these boards, is off the market. He heads back to the Nationals for 1-year and $6.25M. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/nationals-close-signing-howie-kendrick.html
  16. Those hoping for return of Cory Spangenberg can stop waiting. He signed a contract with the Seibu Lions of Nippon Professional Baseball. No details on the contract, but let's hope he comes away with a nice paycheck. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/seibu-lions-sign-cory-spangenberg-sean-nolin.html Spangenberg played 32 games with Milwaukee last year, getting semi-regular playing time down the stretch.
  17. RHP Michael Pineda has re-signed with Minnesota, 2-years/$20M. Pineda will miss the first 1/4 of the season due to a 60-game PED suspension that he partially served last year. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/twins-to-re-sign-michael-pineda.html
  18. Donaldson got $23M (1-year) last off season - and was coming off a down year. I think he'll get at least that much and multiple years after a really good 2019. Dude had a 6.1 bWAR last year - that's elite. The top players are getting better than anticipated contracts (Wheeler, Moose, Grandal), so I'm guessing Donaldson reaches the 3-years, $75M some have predicted.
  19. People, if you want to make a 'brewers financial thread' and discuss those things - please go do it. We have already asked for this to happen, and people are ignoring. Please keep this thread on subject. Thank you.
  20. Defensive metrics for catchers are pretty weird. Grandal is negative on Baseball Reference, then awesome with Fangraphs. I'm not sure what they are using to create their numbers that is so different at times. I believe Fangraphs adds a pitch framing metric and B-Ref does not, and as I recall the pitch framing values can be suspiciously huge. Pitch framing is definitely real, but I'm skeptical how they measure it and how they control for the pitcher. Greg Maddux had a massive strike zone throughout his career and it presumably had nothing to do with who was catching him. Thanks everyone for chiming in. It is helpful what people have added.
  21. I saw one writer suggest a trade for Narvaez would take someone like Ashby. So I'm happy to give up the CBP instead.

  23. Five years, almost $120M. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/phillies-sign-zack-wheeler.html
