  1. My street makes a loop from one of the busiest thoroughfares in Middleton (it's the way most people that live in Waunakee but work downtown/campus use to commute). Today, a power line fell down over the street, blocking all traffic from going through. They closed the road at one of the points where my street intersects with the busy street and used my street as a turnaround. So our little residential street was backed up all day long, making it nearly impossible to get out of our driveway. We are suspecting that the power line fell simply due to the saturated ground.
  2. I'm in Middleton. Aside from the carpet, we had no issues. However, the bike/hiking trail system is destroyed. Also, our Costco took on a lot of water and will be closed for a few weeks and my doctor's clinic was flooded. There are a few inconveniences for certain, but we were spared the worst at our house. Just west of us is another story altogether.
  3. I'd like to see a schedule that looks like this... 18 games against your own division (4 teams)- 72 games 6 games against each of the other teams in the league (10 teams)- 60 games 6 games against one division in the other league (5 teams)- 30 games The division in the other league rotates each year like the NFL does (so in year one the NLC plays the ALC, then the ALE, etc...). It's still 162 games and it guarantees that each team in the division has common opponents that they play the same number of games against.
  4. We got somewhere between 9 and 11 inches of rain last night and water seeped up through a crack in our basement floor, soaking the carpet and pad that was in the basement. What bugs me most is that we were going to replace that carpet in the event that we ever did get water in the basement.
  5. The Saints won the division (tied, but held the tie-breaker over the Panthers ) and were a fluke play away from being in the NFC championship game last year; hard to see them taking that big of a fall. They were one of three teams from the NFC South to make the playoffs and that could very easily be the case again this year.
  6. I did too; it was my one Prime Day purchase. I made Iowa Chops, then seared them in butter when they were done. They may have been the best chops I have ever made. A couple weeks ago, I attempted the snake method of smoking on my Weber kettle and I ran into a problem of it not getting hot enough. I topped out around 180 degrees (was smoking ribs) and I wanted 225-240. I may not have started with enough coals or may not have had enough coals in the snake. I'm willing to try it again but was a bit disappointed.
  7. As I've researched more, latex or hybrid seems to be the best option for us; not memory foam. Now to find out which one to get...
  8. How did you settle on Leesa (and how did you get the teacher discount? I'm also a teacher)? The one thing that I'm noticing about the online options is that it's really hard to differentiate between them.
  9. We are in need of a new mattress. Ours is an 8-year-old memory foam mattress that has developed a significant sag where I sleep (I'm 6'2" 250lbs, not exactly a small person). I cannot stay comfortable at night so I think it's time for a new one. However, it seems like the mattress business has changed significantly very quickly and there are a lot of online options that deliver it to your house. This is somewhat appealing because finding time to go to mattress stores is difficult and I really don't want to go mattress hunting with my kids in tow. However, I am somewhat skeptical because I won't be able to lay on any bed that is ordered online and many of these companies haven't been around long enough to get a good idea of the longevity of their mattresses. Have any of you had success ordering one online? I'm thinking brands like Casper, Purple, Helix, etc... I know most offer a 100 night trial period so if we don't like it we can send it back.
  10. I like the fact that light bulbs have become much more energy efficient, but now the problem is finding places to recycle them. It's not as easy as it should be, IMO. Same goes with batteries.
  11. From a teacher's perspective, I really don't like spring sports. Between boys/girls track, girls soccer, softball, baseball, golf, and boys tennis, there are a lot more sports in the spring than any other season. My students, especially in my final two classes, miss a copious amount of school to attend sporting events. The weather compounds the problem because there are a lot more weather postponements in the spring than there are in the fall, so we get weeks in May when students are missing the same class 3-4 times in a week. As with other student-athlete organizations, I really wish the WIAA could find more ways to prioritize the student part of student-athlete, and I feel moving away from summer baseball completely focuses more on the athlete part.
  12. Jericho, my wife is similar, but yet her phone is always on silent so when I text her, and it's often a half hour or longer before I get a response. My wife has not really bought into technology making lives easier. It's quite common for us to go somewhere and she either forgets her phone or consciously leaves it at home because "you're with me, so I don't need it." This has led to us, many times, getting separated in stores and wandering around aimlessly looking for each other. She actually went to customer service and had me paged once...that really irritated me. Yet there was a day where I was outside at home and my phone was left inside. She tried to call me for some reason then started yelling at me for not having my phone on me. She quickly stopped when I reminded her about her needing to page me because she didn't have her phone.
  13. Unfortunately, she passed away today, one week after my grandfather passed away. Needless to say, this week has been one of the most difficult weeks my family has had.
  14. To add to the week, we found out my grandma's lymphoma returned with a vengeance and is in hospice. April is sure off to a rib-roaring start for us.
  15. This has been a week. We got home from Disney on Saturday, so we had just experienced a high. Then my grandfather passed away Sunday, my back went out, and I had to have a root canal. On top of it, it's supposed to snow Sunday on our way home from Iowa (where his funeral is being held). Also, I had a sub at school today and was blasted by emails and texts from students and colleagues saying my sub was "crazy" and he was asked to leave halfway through the day. That's not my problem but I had to do a small amount of work for the new sub for tomorrow. This is the penance for going to Disney last week and having a great vacation.
  16. Well, this may be getting bigger quickly. Sean Miller was caught on a wire tap discussing a $100,000 payment for a player... http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/22559284/sean-miller-arizona-christian-dawkins-discussed-payment-ensure-deandre-ayton-signing-according-fbi-investigation
  17. This is my wife. She checks our kids' 529s weekly, and they are 6 and 3 years old! I check my quarterly statements when they come in the mail and both of us are in the WRS so we only get one annual statement and we have very little to do with how that money is invested, which is really nice. I'm looking at getting some non-retirement investments going at some point and have zeroed in on VTI or VOO on the ETF front. For some reason I'm sort of chicken when it comes to taking the plunge, but I think it's more due to the amount that we are discussing putting into an account and it's really hard to part with large sums of money sometimes. I do know that it's a best long-term strategy and we will see gains if we let it sit for a while before withdrawing is as income (assuming it earns money over the next several years!).
  18. I understand why they go with precooked from an efficiency and food safety stand point, but they are so bad compared to fresh. This is the case whether you get them at the stadium, buy them and grill them at home, or anything. I actually won't buy anything other than a hot dog at any stadium simply because of how bad they are.
  19. Jim, they do indeed make Polish... https://shopwoodmans.com/madison#/product/147754
  20. Does Johnsonville make hot dogs? If not, who will be the hot dog provider?
  21. Serious Eats is my go-to site right now. Here are a few of the recipes I've had... http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2015/01/30-minute-pressure-cooker-pho-ga-recipe.html http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2017/03/easy-pressure-cooker-pork-chile-verde-recipe.html http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2017/05/new-orleans-style-red-beans-rice-recipe.html With the red beans and rice, the recipe is not a pressure cooker recipe, but I cooked them under pressure for 50 minutes, let the pressure come down naturally for about 10 minutes and then released the remaining pressure manually and finally reduced the liquid using the saute feature on high. It was a bit spicy even using the low amount of cayenne pepper. It did taste better the second day. I also made these... https://www.365daysofcrockpot.com/instant-pot-parmesan-risotto/ https://www.laurengreutman.com/instant-pot-bolognese-sauce-recipe/ I've also used it for hard boiled eggs and I made some chicken stock with it. It's an amazing tool to have in the kitchen.
  22. I had never had it before, but it was really good. I didn't have enough toppings, however, but still liked it.
  23. I cook a lot but I'm not very creative so I rely on recipes. I don't like recipes that say "total cooking time: 45 minutes" but don't factor in time it takes to get liquids up to a boil or up to pressure. For example, I made pho tonight in the instant pot. The recipe is titled, "30 minute pho ga" but doesn't take into account that it takes 20 minutes or so for the pressure cooker to get up to pressure, then it takes 20 minutes to cook, then another 5 or so to depressurize. My "30" minute dinner took an hour. I wish recipes would be more reflective of how long it actually takes.
  24. Here's a really great story about how Pettit sought a team and why it never came to fruition... http://articles.latimes.com/1994-02-02/sports/sp-18102_1_expansion-team
  25. This is precisely why the Admirals are not playing at the new arena. I have a friend in the Admirals front office and he told me the Bucks take a certain percentage of the concessions and merchandise sales at Admiral games and Admiral ownership (which Mark A has a stake in) wanted to negotiate the terms for the new arena. Owners were to meet, but Bucks ownership never showed up to the meeting so the Admirals pretty much immediately decided they'd go to the UWM arena. West coast and east coast money don't get along too well, apparently. Also, I believe the Blackhawks could have blocked a relocation of a franchise to Milwaukee which made the Petits seek an expansion team.
