  1. I can either spend $750 for a good weekend at the Dells/Great America, or I can spend $5000 to go to Disney. Plus, keep in mind how big camping/outdoor recreation is in Wisconsin during the summer. Try getting a campsite at a state park on a Friday/Saturday night...good luck.
  2. Jolly Good soda is making a comeback! Apparently, you can currently buy it in a handful of places in Sheboygan County, but I heard a rumor today that it's going statewide. They revived Sour Power, Cherry, Cream Soda, Grape, and Orange. I may actually drink soda from time to time if I can get my hands on this.
  3. Had two contractors scheduled to come to our house today for two different projects. The first didn't show up and the second emailed me with car problems (at least he did so before his scheduled time). I was home anyways today, but I didn't take the kids anywhere today because of the timing they were supposed to arrive.
  4. There's a bike path that runs parallel to the road. In fact, it is 2 feet from the curb, yet bikers ride in the road. At night. With no light.
  5. We are considering going down and spending one night to take my two young kids to the Shedd Aquarium. I know a few people said they were disappointed in it, but my kids are 5 and 2, and my 2 year old absolutely loves fish. We'd probably do a few other things down there as well, but that is the top of the list. We'd likely stay out in the suburbs (either Rosemont or Schaumburg) unless prices are comparable once parking is factored in. My question...would it be better to go during the week and deal with traffic but smaller crowds, or go on a weekend where there is less traffic but likely bigger crowds? I'm guessing crowds will be big no matter what, but I'm trying to get an idea of what to expect.
  6. We have been in our house for 7 years. When we bought it, we both acknowledged that we weren't going to stay here forever and we wanted something bigger in the future. We are at a point financially where we can probably afford to upgrade, and I routinely check the real estate listings just in case that "perfect" house comes along. I have passed a few listings on to my wife, who has responded with, "it's not time." She doesn't want to go through the process of getting our house ready to sell, and I can understand that. None of the houses I have passed on have been "perfect," lacking a couple things here and there. However, today I came across a house that checks off everything that we want in our next house and it's in our price range. It's been on the market for less than two weeks. I want to send it to her because this could be an opportunity to buy that "perfect" house. I even drove past it today and it is awesome. I don't know how to convince my wife to even consider it.
  7. Southern and SE Wisconsin are under a Moderate threat for severe weather tomorrow afternoon. Could be interesting.
  8. I think it's hilarious that people are willing to drive around to find a close spot when they could have parked and walked in less time than it took for them to find a spot. Also, I don't like it when cars are waiting and their presence forces me to pull out of the spot in the direction I don't want to go. I know this may seem silly, but I want to get out of that parking lot as fast as possible, and I don't like it when I have to go a longer route to accommodate someone who is sitting and waiting there.
  9. I complain when it's 85+ because when the temperatures are that high, that generally means the humidity is high as well, and I hate humidity. I spend last week in Utah and it was in the mid-upper 90s everyday, but the dew point was in the 40s. Yes, it was hot, but I was able to cool down quickly. I got home and it was 91 with a dew point of 70, and it was miserable. Hawing, I have had similar experiences with radio stations. They tend not to report anything about severe thunderstorm warnings. On evenings and weekends, I often wonder if radio stations have a person actually working who can interrupt in case of inclement weather. Most stations carry syndicated shows after 7, so I wouldn't be shocked if there wasn't anyone at the station to break in when needed. There has been only one station I have listened to that breaks in during weather, and that was WTMJ and only during a tornado warning where they interrupted a Brewer game until the warning expired.
  10. I "BBQ'd" ribs yesterday and they turned out fantastic. I have a digital meat thermometer that I stuck in the top vent, and it read around 325, even with the bottom vents open by a sliver and the top vents open just enough to stick the thermometer in. It dipped below 300 only when I closed the bottom vents entirely. I wonder how accurate the readings I got were. It didn't matter, however, because they were delicious.
  11. I just smoke with my Weber kettle grill. I haven't tried anything fancy, just pork butt, ribs, and a whole turkey (which was easily the best turkey I have ever had). I really want to try a brisket at some point. One thing I'm not very good at is controlling the temperature. It's hard to keep it in the 225 range that is needed. Adding a pan of water really helps, but I need to learn how to play with the bottom vents a bit more. Also, one of the biggest disadvantages to the kettle is how close the meat gets to the coals. To limit burning, I bank the coals to one side and put a piece of foil down through the rack, blocking the fire from the meat as much as possible. I want to get a smoker at some point because using the kettle isn't a set and forget method. I really want something that I could get going in the morning and not touch it until dinner.
  12. I may have put this in here before, but I'll say it again. The postal service closed the Madison processing center last year, so all of our mail now goes to Milwaukee. I received a bill in the mail four days after it was mailed from Madison (I live in Middleton), and it was due four days later. Thank goodness for online payments in this case because I could pay it right away, but if I had to rely on the mail, my bill may have been late. This also is true of mail within my own city. There is no local processing, so anything that is mailed to us from my kids' school, which is less than a mile from our house, goes through Milwaukee.
  13. I want to apply for a couple new jobs but I need three letters of recommendation to apply, and one of them has to be from an administrator. I have asked, asked, and asked again, and they keep forgetting, even when I give them hard deadlines. I'm not sure if this is their attempt at keeping me at the school or if they are just really forgetful people, but it's really frustrating to not have the documentation I need to apply for jobs.
  14. I thought about that after I posted, but I was hoping to show that MLB and AAA teams can coexist within the same market. Currently, the Mallards average around 6200 per game, which would be in the middle of the pack in both the PCL and the IL. Ticket prices for a reserved seat in the grandstand at Warner Park range from $10-$15, which is in line with many AAA teams already. I don't think the presence of the Mallards discourages people from making the trek to Milwaukee. I actually go to more Brewer games than Mallards games, and Warner Park is less than 15 minutes from my house compared to an hour and 20 minutes. If there was no baseball at all in Madison, then I could see where there is an issue, but there is baseball that is having the same success as many minor league teams, and it hasn't hurt the Brewers. I think that having a AAA team that is affiliated with the Brewers could benefit the Brewers because of the connection people will make with players as they make their way through the system and eventually make it to MLB. I know this was true when Prince, Weeks, et al were in Beloit...people from Madison would go to Beloit to see those guys, and I'm sure it is happening with the T-Rats. I know using the Mallards as a comparison may not be fair because they play roughly 35 home games compared to 70 or so for a AAA team, but it's the closest thing I can come up with.
  15. I look at it this way...Madison is a similar size to Des Moines, so the population is large enough to support a AAA team. Also, there are several AAA teams that are just as close if not closer to their parent teams (Seattle/Tacoma, Atlanta/Gwinnett, Boston/Pawtuckett, just to name some). Also, ticket prices for the Mallards are very similar to that of the Iowa Cubs, so as long as ticket prices wouldn't change, I think they would be a draw in May-August. I also don't think that having a team in Madison would stop people from going to Brewer games. Right now, I don't get to many Brewer games because I have two small kids, and I'm limited to day games if I take them. In Madison, we can go to a Mallard's game, stay for an hour and a half or so and not feel like I've been cheated out of money, and it is very kid friendly. Maintaining the family-friendly atmosphere would be a must for a AAA team. As others have said, the stadium would be an issue. Warner Park just had a bunch of renovations done about 5 years ago, and while I think they could expand it to seat 10,000, it would be difficult and it would have to be privately funded.
  16. I am an ok golfer...several years ago, I could shoot in the low 80s, but now I play just a couple times a year and shoot in the mid-upper 90s. I really want to get back to shooting in the 80s consistently and am wondering how valuable a lesson would be to help me get there. Has anyone done a lesson and if so, what impact did it have on your game?
  17. I'm a Prime member, and I ordered something yesterday at around 3:00 and it was delivered today, less than 24 hours after I ordered it. That's why I use Amazon for a lot of stuff.
  18. 1) Today is the final day of my spring break. During the 6 days off, I spent just over 10 hours in some sort of appointment. 2) My 3.5 year old car needs new tires at 37,000 miles and the water pump is leaking. Thank goodness it's under warranty for the water pump, but I am not looking forward to forking out $500 already on new tires.
  19. This happened after college as well, but now I'm in my mid-30s, so this isn't supposed to happen as much at this age.
  20. Within the next few months, I have good friends moving to Chicago, Georgia, and Washington state. This is bugging me that I'm losing a lot of friends soon.
  21. My oldest daughter, who is 4 and a half, has a birthday party to go to tomorrow. The invite did not include "do not bring gifts." Really? So this kid is going to get 24 presents from her day care friends? Also, along those same line...she has been invited to way too many birthday parties for her age. Seems like parents are having huge parties for 3rd, 4th, and 5th birthdays.
  22. Mine are still up, but turned off. Most of them are buried in snow, so I need to wait for more to melt before I take them down.
  23. We have a layer of ice under about 4-5 inches of snow in Middleton. Sleet is falling with high winds. Not good at all outside.
  24. Christmas Eve is an hour and a half way, I think my sister is coming to my house, but she hasn't been in touch with me so I don't know for certain. Typical holiday again...(and yes, I have reached out to her a few times over the past couple of weeks asking her what her plan was, if she's coming, when she's coming, etc... The only response I got was "I don't know yet.")
  25. I'm going to be honest, Facebook has been pretty good when it comes to not giving away the movie. I don't know when I'll get to see it and I still don't know anything about it, which is good.
