  1. With two younger sons that have the potential to be very good college players, if not NBA players as well.
  2. I like to get my hands on various historic artifacts, and today my wife (by surprise) scored possibly my favorite one; a piece of the Berlin Wall.
  3. My wife and I are both public employees in WI, so all of our investments are either in WRS or our Roth 403(b)s that we set up. I am somewhat interested in investing some money that we can liquidate fairly easily. I was looking into mutual funds, but the minimum amount to buy into a fund is more than I am willing to put in, but I came across ETFs. What are people's thoughts on ETFs? I found two that are indexed; one is indexed to the S&P the other a total stock index. They appear to be very similar to an index fund but without minimums other than the cost for a "share."
  4. I'm actually (and seriously) wondering if Martellus Bennett is on their radar. The Patriots traded for Dwayne Allen, which makes it very unlikely Bennett will be back with them.
  5. I read a tweet during the combine (one of the Packers writers retweeted it) that there were nine CBs in the combine that ran a faster 40 than Rollins (or Randall?), who is the fastest CB on the team. They will have to draft some speed, but I agree that it's frustrating that they have done nothing so far (one day, I guess) in FA to address a terrible secondary. And IMO, good riddance to Hyde. He made some plays, but he was often torched himself. I think it was during the Washington game where they had a graphic of QB rating vs. each DB, and Hyde was the worst of the bunch, and that's saying a lot.
  6. I'll start off by saying that I love burgers on the grill, as I'm sure most of us do. However, my wife does not because they tend to get a bit more dried out than if they are cooked in a skillet. So I tried a new method of burger cooking today; I put a cast iron skillet right on the grate, put a little bacon grease in the skillet, and went to town. They were fantastic! They got a bit of the smoky flavor from the grill and were very juicy. I said next time I'll finish them on the grate just to get the char, but I'll do this method again.
  7. Jeff Levering was doing it the other night during the Wisconsin game, which I did not know he did.
  8. I bought a cheap laptop a few years ago without thinking that some games I play may not be compatible (it has an integrated graphics card...won't make that mistake again). I'm considering buying something that can actually handle games other than Civ4, but price is somewhat hindering that.
  9. I'm about to that point. Either that or we get rid of her car for something that has AWD and buy snow tires.
  10. This could be a "what's bugging you" post, but it involves winter, so I'll put it here. I think it was around 2002, we got a surprise 5 inch snowfall in Madison (on a night where the Badgers were playing MSU at home, if any of you can recall that game). My wife was in her car near the UW hospital getting onto Campus Dr. from the onramp at Highland. As she was merging, she spun out and ended up facing oncoming traffic. That was in a 1989 Toyota Camry that was absolutely terrible in the snow. Since that incident, she won't drive if it's even flurrying outside, and she has a car that has fancy safety features (except no AWD). At this point, I'm tempted to tell her we need to move somewhere where there is no snow. Unrelated, I think I decided that I may finally get a snowblower. I threw out my back last weekend and my doctor told me I can't shovel. We've had two snowfalls since I hurt my back and I don't like relying on the neighbor.
  11. The plans are to start constructing interchanges, etc beginning next year with all construction wrapping up by 2020. But the delay may come due to funding. We'll have to wait and see.
  12. It's completely done, for now. Phase 2 is slated to start next year, I believe, but may be delayed a year or two.
  13. There are two significant traps: The first is when you exit I-90 and get onto the Beltline. A cop likes to catch cars exiting the Interstate that are going 70+ after the speed limit drops to 55. The second is much farther down past where you exit (assuming you exit Verona Rd), where the Beltline curves between Gammon and Mineral Point Rd. I normally don't see many on the Beltline when I'm on the stretch between the Interstate and Verona Rd, but I don't travel that stretch that often. I think traffic goes around 60 because there are stretches where there are a lot of on/off ramps close to each other which makes merging rather difficult.
  14. This season is Exhibit A as to why the idea to expand the regular season to 18 games is a bad idea. Lots of star power is out for the year, teams like the Packers can barely field a competitive team, there have been bad games to watch, and TV ratings are down. Coming into the year, the Packers had the 3rd youngest team in the NFL, behind LA and Cleveland. I know there's a lot of benefits to having a young team, but this year should prove that maybe that should not be a badge of honor every year. It's been absolutely brutal to watch.
  15. I smoked on my Weber kettle a few years ago. I have the America's Test Kitchen cookbook (which is a must-have, IMO) and used the recipe from there and it was easily the best turkey I have ever had.
  16. This has happened in the past 5 years, big time. We had 13 teachers retire last year, I think 8 or 9 the year before, and another 8-10 the year before that. A couple of our departments have had 80% turnover over the past 5-6 years. Some of that are people leaving the profession for other ventures, but well over half have been due to retirement.
  17. No Tampa at home again. They have played at Miller Park once, I believe, and I couldn't make it to a game. That is the last team I need to see play to have seen every MLB team.
  18. BW3's gave us a draft board and set up tables for us. They may have had given us some sort of appetizer specials, but nothing much else. The best place was a bar that had a basement room that we rented, but it closed. I much rather do it at a house. Get some beer, make some snacks, you get a strong internet connection, and you can hear everything. However, depending on size of the league, space may be difficult at a house.
  19. Something to keep in mind when it comes to going to a bar/restaurant...noise. One of my leagues always drafts at a restaurant or a bar. The last two years has been at a Buffalo Wild Wing's and the year before at some dive bar and at both places, you couldn't hear a thing. Try to find some place that has a private room and free wifi.
  20. While I agree with the public perception of adding baseball plus an equal number of women's scholarships, the athletic department does not receive any revenue from the university and in fact, it gives money to the university. They often receive aid from the state for capital projects, but the department is largely self-sufficient. That being said, there are donors lined up to add baseball, but Barry had repeatedly stated it's not happening.
  21. We were supposed to have a gas insert installed into our fireplace today. As they were working, they came across vermiculite, which is an old form of insulation. Apparently, most vermiculite that is in homes contains asbestos, even though our house was built in 1983 when they were removing it from structures. Work had to be halted and now we get to have someone remove the vermiculite, which will likely double the cost of this project.
  22. I drove past a drive-thru coffee shop this morning and there were at least 10 cars waiting in line for the drive-thru. At what point would it be faster just to park your car and go inside? I know on the rare occasion I go to a fast food place, I go inside if there are three cars or more in line to order (not counting those that have already ordered).
  23. I'll reiterate that if this conclusion is based only on fuel consumption, it's not overly reliable. Other factors must be included to come up with the true summer jump. The USDOT also does estimated counts in mileage, and that data can be found here...https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/policyinformation/travel_monitoring/tvt.cfm Perhaps this is better than just Wisconsin data because this is national data.
  24. I really think you are overestimating college students' impact on fuel consumption. If you think January fuel consumption goes down partly due to colleges being on break, you have to factor that decrease in the summer months as well, making the summer month jumps even higher than they appear. There are other statistics that when considered along with fuel consumption would paint a better picture of the summer driving season. For example, you may have to look at non-weather related accidents, citations, etc... I'm also sure that someone in the DOT does traffic counts on highways that shows that there is an increase in traffic in the summer months. Looking at fuel consumption alone isn't going to tell you the whole story because you have to consider gas prices, fuel efficiency, and such as well. Edit: Here is a link to 2014 traffic counts in Wisconsin Counties A-Kewaunee. For each site, I looked at the MADT (Monthly Average Daily Traffic) column, and at nearly every site where data was collected, traffic in the summer months was higher, in some instances significantly higher, than in the winter months. http://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/projects/data-plan/traf-counts/cont2014-a-k.pdf Here's a link to all of the data the WIDOT collects...http://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/projects/data-plan/traf-counts/default.aspx
  25. Here you go. It's not exactly consumption, rather refiner-retailer sales. https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=pet&s=a103600001&f=m
