  1. Is there a special roster designation for late signees to go to extended spring training, or do they have to go on the 25 man?
  2. The Brewers are well aware of Villar's baserunning miscues. I saw Subero interview during the game Sunday, and specifically mentioned Villar needing to cut down on his mistakes. Don't remember what else he said in particular, but if the coaching staff is really making it a point of emphasis with him, perhaps there's a chance that some of the poor choices will be reduced. Maybe they said that before too, but I feel like I had seen comments more like wanting to let him play instinctually before 2017.
  3. When I went back to try to look at some articles, it seems to me that the concern was really mainly just the arm injury. Pre-Draft https://www.lookoutlanding.com/2017/6/10/15766626/keston-hiura-2017-mlb-draft-profile-uc-irvine Post-Draft https://www.mlb.com/news/brewers-draft-2b-keston-hiura-no-9-overall/c-235986130 Offseason https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/keston-hiura-on-hitting-and-business-economics/
  4. If I saw a player said something as sanctimonious as that, I would be incredibly turned off to them. I don't see how someone talking about a position change having some challenges can even remotely be considered complaining. It's not like he's said "I really don't like 1b", or "I should be the main LF" or any junk like that. I guess saying "I'm sacrificing myself for the team" is more or less the same as "I'll play wherever they need me", but it just sounds a lot worse to me.
  5. Braun's UZR career for LF is -3.3, and for RF it's -7.6. Santana so far has a -11.8 UZR for his career in RF, and even worse elsewhere. Ryan Braun would probably be a slight upgrade defensively in RF, but considering he's getting older, not sure that it would be enough to make a playing time decision over. Just to add, Christian Yelich was 4.4 UZR in LF, and -5.9 in CF, and Lorenzo Cain is LF 13, CF 22.3, RF 14.5. The most consistent outfield defense would probably be Braun LF, Cain CF, Yelich RF, if you assume Yelich would end up somewhere between his LF and CF defensive rating. With the questions about his arm, it might be best to go with Yelich LF, Cain CF, and whoever in RF, and just try to roll the defense over towards RF more often than not to try to lessen the ground they have to cover over there. (This is purely from a defensive standpoint).
  6. Tinfoil hat... maybe the trade talks about Santana have been heating up, so they wanted Braun to get a bit of action out there? /tinfoil off
  7. Who ever said Wade Miley was great? I'm possibly the most extreme poster in support of Miley, and I've basically only said that it would not be the end of the world if he continued to have good results this spring and took the 5th spot with a short leash.
  8. My problem with the idea of Miley is it's a page straight out of the mid-2000s Brewers handbook of "sign a bunch of junk, and start the best of them." That's how we got the likes of Victor Santos, Wes Obermueller and Wayne Franklin in those intrepid rotations. I guess I incorrectly thought that the new regime was going to focus on developing in-house pitching, and give them chances to produce. There is simply nothing that Brent Suter and Brandon Woodruff have left to prove at AAA to warrant a guy like Miley getting a spot over them. The fact that they didn't make a move other than Chacin to strengthen the pitching staff tells me that they are not in "go for it" mode, so I guess that's another reason I don't understand why they wouldn't roll with Suter and Woodruff, as those guys stand a much better chance of being part of the team when it is going for it than Miley does. I would have been more enthused about Yo, but that's my heart talking, not my head. I'm a sucker for nostalgia. The thing is, in those years, the problem was that the Brewers were filling out 3+ spots in the rotation with those kinds of guys. As long as it's only 1 spot, and the leash isn't too long, I'm not going to get too uptight about it.
  9. I think the chances that Miley can hold down a 5 ip / start 4.5 ERA or better is much greater than 1%. As long as they don't hold out hope on him for 10 starts of badness I am not going to complain about giving him a shot at the backend of the rotation. I think they've already shown a willingness to move on from some of these "give them a shot" pitchers as they've already taken Yo out of the rotation race.
  10. I think any team that might see him as and upgrade to their bench probably assumes they could try to claim him on waivers for free, and don't desire him enough to trade for him to make sure they are the ones who would get him.
  11. I believe there was a year where a GM constructed a roster that had 3 washed up shortstops manning first base. I like this situation a lot better than that.
  12. Attanasio had an interview with MLB TV where he discussed Yelich and Cain and both had been in the works for a long time, and if I remember correctly, he stated that the two moves were both desired independently of each other, and it just happened that they both ended up culminating at the same time. He had said something to the effect of, they knew Cain would be signing soon, but trade talks go on for some time, and then bang, it happens that they agree, so there is often less lead time to know that it's really going to happen.
  13. I can deal with one of Guerra/Miley taking the 5 spot to start the season, but would not like it if both of them were to take the rotation spots from Suter/Woodruff. Neither of these guys have been near as bad as Milone was last spring and still somehow managed to claim a spot. I can also deal with one of Guerra/Miley/Gallardo as the 8th "long man" role as it's kind of pointless to put a prospect that you have some high hopes for in that role. I don't hate Drake, but with the increased bullpen depth that the Brewers have this year, he's just not needed, since he really can't fill the 8th Long man role. Jeffress I really can't count as just a general "retread" since he's had success with the Brewers, and is not really expected to be one of their top 3-4 relievers anyways.
  14. Share some photos in the Spring Training thread, and have a good time!
  15. With the exception of his first taste of AAA, Kyle Wren can have many things said of him, but one of them would not be that he lacks a high OBP.
  16. My take on Broxton is that, while he certainly doesn't have a spot on the roster as things currently stand, I think he is certainly useful as a depth piece. I'm pretty ambivalent and willing to give the Brewers the benefit of the doubt as to whether some potential trade for low level prospect(s) is worth more to them than having him as depth in the outfield at AAA this year. Though his option likely increases his value to some extent, I don't think it precludes him being able to be traded in the offseason, or potentially making the team as a 4th/5th OF next year as the composition of the roster changes in the next year. For the record, I'm still pretty high on his defensive abilities. Last year I had looked into a defensive metric that grades each play on the estimated probability that an out can be made, and he was still grading very highly on the hard plays, and it just looked like he had a few egregious errors that hurt his overall numbers in the other metrics people use regularly. Obviously, he made the errors and you can't take them out, but I don't really see him as being likely to continue making as many errors as he had last year.
  17. If Santana were put in a strict platoon, sure, that would probably lower his value. I don't think that's going to happen. The factor that could lower his trade value is the logjam in the outfield the Brewers are currently presented with. This could have a perceived notion of the Brewers being perhaps desperate to unload him, but if that's the factor that has prevented a trade going down now, him playing a few less games as they do a 4-5 player rotation through the OF/1B could quite possibly enhance his value rather than diminish it, as it would show the Brewers are serious about being content to roll with what they have and just split the ABs up a little bit more than otherwise.
  18. I would expect Cain to decline by the end of his 5 year deal, but how much? I can buy into an argument that he profiles to age more gracefully than several of the older pitchers that have burned the Brewers over the last 10-15 years, giving legitimacy to a 4-5 year window with him and Yelich.
  19. I could see them putting Suter in the rotation, Gallardo as last man in the pen, and Woodruff in AAA, but I think I prefer your projection.
  20. Just to make sure my opinion is clear, since I think I'm the one proposing that they aren't much more likely to sign an SP next year than this year, it isn't that if they don't spend this year they won't next year. My reasoning is that, from an outsider's perspective, if the SPs this year didn't move the needle, it doesn't seem like the ones next year likely would either, unless the rotation ends up being pretty bad, which I do not necessarily anticipate. I don't pretend to know budget wise what the Brewers really can or can't spend this year or on an ongoing basis.
  21. With the possible exception of Darvish, I don't think any of the FA SPs could be said to be "Aces", who you would expect to match up to some of the top 10 pitchers you might worry about trying to beat in a 1 game playoff. Even when the Brewers picked up Sabathia in '08 and he single-handedly carried the team into the playoffs, it still didn't get them out of the wild card round, so even having an Ace is no guarantee of playoff success. That said, having an Ace would be great! I just think that if Stearns didn't see a guy he wanted this year, the rotation is going to have to crash and burn this year to make him change his methodology next year most likely. Or Cobb will be a Brewer tomorrow and the topic of FA pitchers next year will be moot.
  22. If the rotation doesn't end up being the dumpster fire that many seem to fear this year, I wouldn't be shocked if we sit out the FA SP market again next year.
  23. I will give players the benefit of the doubt when it comes to injuries unless something is just shockingly apparent to be a fake.
  24. Tinfoil hat on! I saw this quote from Jake on mlb.com from his introductory press conference: "I want to thank the Middleton family and the Phillies' front office for believing in me and believing that I can come in and move the needle," Arrieta said. "That's exactly what I look forward to doing with this organization." Subtle dig at Stearns for saying SPs out there wouldn't move the needle for the Brewers?
  25. I'm sure when there is anything other than crickets regarding Cobb, it will be here. Once he signs with the Brewers, he'll be able to afford a better cell phone service!
