  1. It annoys me how much Rock harps on how the calls off the corner have at least been consistent. If an ump is calling pitches 3 inches off the corner consistently as strikes, he's still consistently wrong.
  2. Atta boy, ump. You screwed up and blew the call, so make Shaw pay for it. And you wonder why 80% of people want to replace you with machines.
  3. Perez is making $2M, Sogard is making $2.4M. Walker is making $5M. I'd much rather have Walker plus the extra roster spot than those two.
  4. I honestly think he could start 30 times and have a 4.00 ERA at the end of it. He had a 4.04 ERA as a starter last year. I don't think you'll see that again and certainly not over 30 starts.
  5. 1 quality start from our starting pitchers in 7 chances. Which isn't even that high of a bar -- 6 IP, 3 ER.
  6. Just my opinion -- if, and it's a huge if, but if Suter can survive in the majors, it'll have to be as a long man. When opposing hitters are seeing him once a game, his deception might be enough. When guys see him 2-3 times a game, it's big, big trouble. Look at Suter's career splits. First time through the order, he does very well. Second time, he has some struggles. Third time, he gets absolutely crushed -- a 1.120 OPS against.
  7. Based on 2 starts this year? He's a career 3.49 ERA through 17 starts. When has he ever been absolutely shelled at the major league level? Even tonight he should have given up 2 runs without the errors and bad decision from Braun. Credit him with maybe 3 at most, that will win more often than not, and he hasn't located well at all even. I really don't understand the hatred for him from a lot of posters. It's not hatred. It's just the reality that, once hitters learn his tendencies, once there's a book out on him, his stuff is just not going to play well at the MLB level. You can't get away with 86-87 at this level without consistently perfect command.
  8. I've been watching that. Was going to wait until he got pulled to comment. Keon with a nice night, 3 for 3 to start the season. Your classic quadruple A player.
  9. True enough, but you're also not going to win any games with 0 runs, which is the count we have put up for the last 13 innings now.
  10. While people are rightfully blaming the pitching, the bats aren't doing enough either. 4 runs a game isn't going to cut it and it would be much less without Braun's late heroics so far. Coles is a guy that I thought should have had a red hot seat after 2017 and if he can't get it done with the guys he's been given now, something is very wrong.
  11. Why was Suter hitting? I swear, Counsell is the king of "I've got to let him hit here because I've got to squeeze a few more hitters out of him." We had a guy on to start the inning, just PH for Suter and see if you can string together a big inning and get back in this game. But no, you've got to give away an out and snuff out the chance for a big inning to ride it out with the total junk he's throwing when you'll be fortunate to even get another inning out of him.
  12. Maybe the whole "Derek Johnson will fix 'em!" idea wasn't so solid. (I was guilty of this too.)
  13. Same old Hernan, hack away. Would have liked to see him make up for his big miscue.
  14. Remember when Taylor Jungmann arrived in the bigs and destroyed hitters for awhile? That was Suter's 2017. Unfamiliarity, and he was able to get away with his deception and intelligence like he did in the minors -- for a little while. Scary thing is, Jungmann had much better stuff than Suter does. Once there's an established book out on Suter, he's going to get lit up like a Christmas tree and probably end up playing alongside Jungmann in Japan.
  15. Perez, you're not good for a whole lot if you can't provide at least serviceable D.
  16. Braun has been around too long to be making two really boneheaded plays in 2 innings.
  17. Braun makes a really smart play, followed by a really dumb play.
  18. That was with a 4 man rotation, referring to the conversation near the bottom of the previous page.
  19. Nick Ramirez would be a nice guy to have in a 9 man pen because you could reasonably use him as a PH as well. I wonder if they could cheat a little bit with the roster and still get away with an 8 man pen by playing musical chairs with a couple pen spots and flip flopping guys like Suter, Williams, and Peralta between MLB and AAA every so often for 10 days when they need some rest.
  20. I've been hoping for that for a long time. I think there's a lot of dogma in current practices. A team with as many long relievers and short starters as the Brewers should definitely be trying this. I think as soon as teams start doing it, it's going to become less unusual pretty fast because it will prove effective in many circumstances. Totally agree Luke. I think there's some stigma in trying new approaches because of the fact that "everyone does it this way for a reason". I would counter that by saying it isn't the way that it was done 30 years ago, which isn't the way it was done 30 years before that. The game and best practices are constantly changing and evolving because of various factors. I think in 10 years there might be a much larger blur between starter and reliever and guys who can go 2-3 strong innings followed by 2 days off or so might be a lot more common role. It's not just about who you have, it's about putting them in the best position to succeed. Obviously a traditional approach of starter goes 6-7, relievers go 2-3, isn't the best way for our pitching staff.
  21. If the rotation is still a dumpster fire after April and the bullpen is still lights out, I'd like to see them try a radical approach. 4 man rotation on 3-4 days rest instead of 4-5, achieved by limiting starters to 80-90 pitches per start, or 4-5 innings. 9 man pen. Rotation: Anderson, Davies, Chacin, Woodruff Bullpen: Knebel, Hader, Barnes, Jennings, Jeffress, Suter, Drake/Logan, Williams, Hoover I think Tampa is already doing something like this with 4 starters, although they're not doing 3-4 days rest, they're just doing a pen day on day 5. But things like this, while radical, aren't unheard of. I think it would work even better on an NL team with a versatile bench like us -- you could really limit your pitcher ABs and consistently use pinch hitters and double switches. I realize this isn't going to happen. Just something I think would be interesting to try -- minimizing your weaknesses and maximizing your strengths.
  22. They only need to keep Burnes down another week or so for the extra service year. I know they probably would like to wait until July or so, but they may not be able to afford to.
