  1. Not sure why anyone thinks $16M a year for Cain is an overpay. He's well worth that if you can even get 3 out of 5 years close to his recent production. I'm not crazy about the 5th year either but to be honest he could have gotten 4/80 in this day and age instead of 5/80 and the sports world wouldn't have been the least bit fazed by it.
  2. Yeah don't even care what the dodgers were offering. I'm sure we were offered too much and we missed a chance. Yeah, that was a classic case of know when to hold em, know when to fold em, and Stearns definitely should have folded Braun when he had the chance. Forget about whoever the two prospects were, having McCarthy available as another option, and having Puig would be worth far more than what we have with Braun. At least Puig would have some surplus trade value if we wanted to go that route and not just be a difficult to move salary dump only option. I'm coming across as more critical of Stearns than I would like to. He's an excellent GM and hits far more than he misses. But this was probably his biggest miss.
  3. Yelich needs to play left or center IMO. You lose a lot of his value in right or at 1st. I know this means Braun has to go back to right, but RF isn't where Yelich carries defensive value.
  4. Unless they have a taker lined up for Braun that he'll approve, I can't imagine this is true. Would make no sense to have Braun or Santana as a 4th OFer.
  5. As much as we've thrown Ortiz into trade suggestions this off-season, I think the Brewers are a lot more hesitant to part with him than we are. Though he didn't have a great 2017 and probably won't be ready until 2019, Ortiz likely has a higher starter ceiling than any other pitching prospect in our system.
  6. 7th best xFIP in baseball of guys over 100 innings last year. 96 on his fastball and one of the games best changeups. 3 years of reasonable cost control. Definitely some concerns, the low inning counts being the biggest. But he wouldn't be talked about for Santana if there weren't some concerns. The stuff is definitely there.
  7. Here's my take on it: Liveforoctober brings up a great point. Both the trade and FA market for outfielders just got thinner. Whatever perceived value that Stearns lost by his OF depth chart is negated by that. Yes, JD Martinez is still out there, but Stearns knows perfectly well which teams are going to drop the kind of coin needed for him and which won't. I am not too concerned about it and am pretty confident that this entire sequence has been meticulously planned out. Stearns knows what Santana's trade market is by now. What other teams know about our OF situation isn't as important as having a desirable asset. Many teams could use a young, cost controlled outfielder like Santana, particularly in the AL. But we only need one for a trade partner, and it doesn't need to be one particular team.
  8. Never thought Ryan Braun would be our worst starting outfielder, ha.
  9. I hope not. The trend has been obtaining high OBP guys and he’s not one of those types. I’d rather us snag Walker and not give up prospects. Yeah especially with middle infielders not getting big money it makes too much sense to not bring back Walker at this point. This morning I would have rather let it ride with Villar, but given our latest acquisitions I'd prefer the solid proven safe option.
  10. Still have a lot of great prospects on the farm. The pitching is basically all still in tact, and numerous position players could break out in '18 - Hiura, Erceg, Grisham, Ray, Dubon, Gatewood, Lutz. Lots of exciting things happening on the farm still. Obviously lots of exciting things happening in Milwaukee. Crazy how we are about 5 hours removed from calling this the most boring off-season ever.
  11. Exactly. We can rent him for 3 years and trade him at 29 if things aren't going as hoped and still probably get comparable value back to at least Brinson + Diaz.
  12. Sneed had a 6 ERA in the minors last year. He's not even among the top 30 prospects for the Astros. What does the Astros wanting to dump Villar for pennies and Sneed being those pennies have to do with Sneed's actual value now?
  13. Here's the thing about that. Let's say that happens and we need to reboot again. Worst case, unless Yelich falls off a cliff at 26, which is highly unlikely, we can basically get a refund on the deal. No obviously not the same prospects, but if he produces at the rate he has been, the difference between his trade value now and his value with 3-4 years left on a cheap contract will be very negligible. That's one of the great things about this deal. Yelich doesn't have trade protection. The risk is mitigated by being able to reverse course on him if things don't work out.
  14. Come on, man. Stearns is a smart guy and isn't going to be caught with his pants down and 8 OFers. He's been shopping Santana for months and I'm sure has a very good idea of what his market is. The fact that they signed Cain moments after trading for Yelich isn't a coincidence. This is systematic and planned out as to what they are going to do from here. They aren't done.
  15. So what if he doesn't? C'mon man... You completely missed my point. It wasn't a dig on him. I didn't know who it was without looking it up. KJ Harrison Braden Webb Nash Walters Cy Sneed Barrett Astin Zach Quintana Drew Gagnon Those were our last 7 third round picks. They usually don't amount to a hill of beans and don't move the needle whatsoever on the scale of whether you decide to invest $80M on a player. It's not like it used to be where you automatically give up a 1st rounder...
  16. It's clear that based on their own internal analysis, the Brewers are emphasizing a new philosophy in regard to outfield defense. Or hitters. Or both.
  17. Deal keeps getting better! Be honest, without looking it up, do you even know who our 3rd round pick was last year?
  18. Love Cain. Wish it was 3-4 years, but the $16M annual tag is fair. MLBTR pegged him for 4/70.
  19. Santana has got to be getting traded at some point here.
  20. I know this stings but keep this in mind -- we essentially gave up no pitching prospects. Yamamoto yeah, but he's borderline top 30.
  21. Dubon was a bit of a letdown this year. It's possible he just doesn't hit enough at the MLB level to be a productive starter. He's still likely a future big leaguer, just more likely as a super utility/pinch runner type. Which has value. I just don't know if he is anyone's shortstop of the future. But like others have said he could bounce back.
  22. Yuni was trash, but we could have done better than Escobar too who I would think the Royals probably expected more out of. He had a nice 2014 but other than that Escobar has really never been anything special. At very best he ended up being the 3rd best player given up in that deal.
  23. Yeah, I'm not a big Hernan Perez guy. But at least he's not a defensive hack. Much like Broxton, Perez should start somewhere against most lefties, and never against righties.
  24. Yuni B wasn't a FA signing though. He came here in the Greinke deal as a necessary evil because of trading Escobar. EDIT: You're probably referring to when we brought him back in 2013, my bad!
  25. If we had had a deal in place to sign Cozart for what turned out to be a really reasonable amount, trading for Yelich with Arcia as the centerpiece and saving most of the rest of our top prospects might have been a good idea. Unfortunately it's not an option anymore.
