1. I don't know what the answer is. I don't know if you fire Coles, or what. I don't even know who you replace. Pina has been good. Shaw has been good. They were a good offense for the first half and then they went into what everyone assumed was just a funk, yet that's exactly who they've been for 7 weeks now.
2. I'm on board with those who despise Billy Hamilton. Nothing but a track star masquerading as a crappy baseball player, who magically turns into the next coming of Rickey Henderson every time he sees a Brewer pitcher.
3. .704 really isn't a terrible platoon split. If you really want a lefty bat in CF that bad, give Phillips a start. I can't believe this much of an argument needs to be made to play an actual outfielder in center field.
4. Glad we made sure to get Sogard's hot bat in the lineup.
5. Uhhh...Broxton has put up around an .800 OPS and has among the best range among CFs in baseball. It's kind of hilarious that you would make the 'you do have to have competent people to play the other spots' argument when Broxton has been easily better than Villar this season. Villar has literally been the best hitter for a month, they're trying to ride the hot hand and he's lefty vs a RHP. I don't get how this is so hard to grasp why they've been trying it. They knew the risk, they're not stupid. It was a gamble, they knew, it lost tonight. Just because they knew the risk doesn't mean it wasn't stupid. We understand why they have been trying it, you don't need to keep explaining it and explaining why you can't understand why people can't grasp it, we grasp it. People have said repeatedly, just play him at his natural position, does Sogard really need the start? You're underestimating the importance of defense. If your entire strategy to work a guy into the game is based on the premise of, 'hopefully nothing gets hit his way unless it's routine', that's a bad strategy. Should we try working him in at catcher too?
6. Uhhh...Broxton has put up around an .800 OPS since returning and has among the best range among CFs in baseball. It's kind of hilarious that you would make the 'you do have to have competent people to play the other spots' argument when Broxton has been easily better than Villar this season.
7. So put him at 2nd where he belongs, don't just put yourself in a position to give up extra runs defensively when you're not scoring. Is Eric Sogard really an essential cog for this lineup? There are plenty of ways to work Villar into the lineup without sticking him somewhere he can't play.
8. Counsell can think about this one for a long time if we lose a 1 run game and miss the playoffs by 1 game.
9. Well, he had a reasonably solid August and saved a game defensively the other day. What exactly should he be doing, breaking bats and knocking over water jugs? I'd much rather see him taking everything in stride rather than sitting there stewing.
10. Counsell going to the well one too many times on Villar in CF. Broxton makes that play easily.
11. Yeah, not sure who is referring to with that comment. No one is claiming Thames is better than Hosmer. Also Hosmer is a brutal defender at 1st, so also not sure why he said offensively and defensively. It's probably going to cost 5 years and 100M to acquire Hosmer. Obviously free agency is a guessing game at this point but that's my best guess. Is it worth that kind of investment for a guy who is probably 1 win or so better per year than a Thames/Aguilar platoon? What would the trade market be for a guy like Jose Abreu? He has 2 more years of control and would be a needed big bat in the middle of the lineup. Have to think the White Sox would definitely be willing to deal him being in full sell mode.
12. The big additions for the Cubs were Quintana and Wilson. Quintana has been exactly who he was for the White Sox, a 4.50 ERA pitcher. Wilson has been terrible. Almost a walk an inning and a 2 WHIP. 5.56 ERA. Curious as to who we missed out on that would have been such a positive impact so far or helped the offense score more runs.
13. Ok then, with whom? We don't have a Cody Bellinger waiting in the wings. Hosmer and Morrison are going to cost an arm and a leg on multi year deals and you're buying high on both. Even if you want to try to convert Braun or Santana, neither is really an offensive upgrade from a Thames/Aguilar platoon, and it's unrealistic to expect either to be a defensive upgrade in their first year at the position. Any worthwhile trade upgrade is going to be a big hit to the pitching surplus we've worked so hard to build up in the minors. It's easy to say an upgrade would be nice and it certainly would, but I don't see anything out there either internally or externally that makes a lot of sense and is going to be a substantial upgrade. My guess is the tentative plan right now, subject to change like anything else, is one more year of Thames/Aguilar and then re-evaluate after 2018.
14. Good ways to go out this year for Ponce and Medeiros.
15. Yeah, Thames and Aguilar isn't even close to the same thing as Garza.
16. And like bases loaded walks haven't been enough for just us today, the Rockies win on a walkoff walk. Look where Ball 1 is. This is ok to some people. 2 balls to Parra were just as much in the strike zone. No one can get guys out if you have to throw right down the middle to get calls. These guys are influencing games and playoff races. It's not ok.
17. Just to further drive home the point of how bad MLB umpires are and how much they are influencing games: Gerardo Parra just walked on 4 pitches to load the bases for the Rockies in a 1 out, tie game in the 9th. 3 of the 4 pitches were in the strike zone.
18. Hader was bound to give up a couple sooner or later. It happens. Absolutely sucks that it had to be against Billy mother freaking Hamilton. Like I said from early in the game, this always had the feel of a series that is going to be a big letdown series for us.
19. Heaven forbid people go spend some time with their families or outside on one of the few beautiful Wisconsin days left this year.
20. And so the predictable letdown series against a crap team commences.
21. Offense has been so frustrating since the break. They'll tease a breakout for a night, then head right back into hibernation. If you can't manage any production against one of the worst starters in baseball in the most hitter friendly park in baseball, you have a problem.
