  1. I mean at this point we just need to focus on getting there. If they have a chance to get in, it's pretty likely it'll come down to the last couple days of the season. If you need to win Game 162 to force a tiebreaker just to have a shot at playing a WC, you do whatever you need to do in Game 162 to make that happen, even if it means pitching Nelson out of the pen on short rest and worrying about tomorrow tomorrow. If they wind up absolutely needing to win their last 2 games of the reason to even tie, they won't have the luxury necessarily of lining things up the way they want to. Between Nelson, Anderson, Davies and Woodruff, 1 game is pretty much a crapshoot anyway between those 4 as to which one will be your best bet on that night.
  2. Look at the depth right now: MLB: Hader, Woodruff, Williams AAA: Not much here, but maybe something in Angel Ventura and Bubba Derby? AA: Loaded. Burnes, Ortiz, Ponce, Peralta, Lopez, Wilkerson. I mean this is probably one of the most pitching talented teams in the minors. A+: Medeiros, Diplan, Supak, Yamamoto. Pretty loaded here, too. Yamamoto has been pretty under the radar, but not for too much longer. Medeiros and Diplan have somewhat disappointed and both might benefit from moves to the pen. A: Pennington, Herrera There's also numerous rehabbing guys -- the Kirby, Devin Williams, Bickford types that could still pan out. Not to even mention guys like Lemons that we really don't know what we have yet. I am really excited about the organizational state of our pitching coming up the next few years.
  3. [sarcasm]First I've heard that Briggs thought this was a bad move.[/sarcasm] Seriously, this has been beaten to death more than anything this year. We (the Brewers) thought it was a good move at the time, both because of what we expected from Villar and the fact that we obviously weren't able to get anything for Scooter. It obviously turned out to be a bad move. I'm sure if Stearns knew what he knew now, he would not have waived him. It was a mistake. Briggs was right. It happens. I'd still take Stearns' and his success rate over the theoretical roster that Briggs would have assembled over the years (no offense, Briggs). I'm sure the Blue Jays regret trading Syndergaard, the Dbacks regret trading Scherzer and the Orioles regret trading Arrieta.
  4. I doubt we are going to make it, but you are right. Big picture, they have stayed relevant and interesting longer than even the most optimistic here would have expected. It gets tough to keep that perspective in a reactionary type game thread, especially after dropping 2 crucial games to a team we know we should beat.
  5. A fatter paycheck and a look at what a MLB clubhouse looks like, I guess.
  6. So frustrating that we just can't take advantage of the soft parts of our schedule. This was so predictable that you can't even call it a 'trap' series. Up to Garza to prevent a sweep now. Not that Craig hasn't already bungled this game plenty, but if you're not going to bring Taylor Williams into a game here I don't know when you ever will.
  7. With the game out of reach we'll likely rally for 3 or 4 now.
  8. As you have been saying every in game thread since the All Star break. Completely wrong, but embellish all you'd like.
  9. Every time I start to get excited about where this team is going, they fold like a cheap lawn chair against some scrub team. Complete chokers.
  10. Counsell has absolutely zero feel for bullpen management. Barnes used to have a nasty slider. Why exactly did they turn him into a cutter guy?
  11. Not only do you take the bat out of his hand, you do it with 2 strikes. Bunting with 2 strikes with anybody but the pitcher is really dumb, doing it with a hot bat is absolutely mind-blowing stupid. It's something I would have not been overly surprised with from Yost or Roenicke, but I really thought Counsell was a little smarter than that. Seems to be an emotional move made out of frustration. I think it might've been Villar's decision. Counsel is not a bad manager and you just don't see a lot of the head scratching things out of him that you did out of past Brewer managers. He showed bunt twice that AB with 2 strikes. They don't have a 'cut that crap out' sign to give him after the first one?

  13. Neil '6 for his last 34' also does not absolutely need to be playing every single day.
  14. Thanks Aguilar. Might as well try the double steal a run thing now.
  15. Bunting with 2 strikes is not a good way to reduce strikeouts.
  16. How the heck are you supposed to tell from that angle if he went or not?
  17. It takes a pretty epic amount of stupidity to bunt with 2 strikes with a non-pitcher. Very fortunate there.
  18. Sure would have loved that last AB, Domingo.
  19. Santana doing his best today to make Villar feel better about his outfield defense.
  20. Any doubt at all that Tooter will probably destroy our pitching the rest of his career?
  21. Hader? Woodruff? I'd say those two were way better than anyone could have hoped for.
  22. And Braun hacks a hittable 0-2 pitch into the ground and we have yet another double play.
  23. Yea I pretty rarely get into anything like that. But I make one comment that I get why they're taking the risk and everyone freaks out like this is the dumbest clearest mistake ever and attacks. It hasn't hurt them in any game yet. And each one attacking has been ignoring the LH hitter who can play CF aspect, that's it right there. It's just like when everyone freaks out on whichever reliever happens to blow it on a given day that Counsel is a moron for it. There's logic in it, they're not morons. And I'd bet and assume Villar has been working there daily during BP so they've been gaining confidence. And really, he did make the play as far as the route/etc went. He just dropped the ball, just like he could drop the ball playing anywhere. Moving on, Davies just needs to keep dealing and if we can't score more than 4 runs you deserve to lose. I don't agree with the idea and hope they don't do it anymore. But I do agree with the last part, until the offense can actually figure something out, it doesn't really matter who is in center. That's the real problem right now and it's been going on too long.
