While I do think that Villar needs to clean up his baserunning over time, I can't believe we've dedicated 4 pages just to talk about his attempts to steal 3rd. Of all the reasons we aren't a good team this year, Villar's risks are so, so far down on the list.

I'd stop short of calling Counsell a placeholder manager, too. I think the plan right now is for him to grow along with this club as a manager all the way as the team grows, not ditch him for a veteran manager as soon as we have a contender again. Grsnted, all plans are subject to change but I think that's the plan now. Like any other manager that we've had, Counsell does some things I like and some things I don't. But the main thing I look for in a manager is the ability to think for himself and not be rigidly tied to a 'book'. I think he's shown that ability, particularly in extra innings on the road with the pen.

I'm sure you are probably right, but it's silly and futile if they are. Garza is worthless. If he became a FA today, he'd be lucky to get a major league contract. He'd be a candidate for a minor league deal like Lohse got. Garza has an ERA near 6 in the last season and a half and is a sunk cost. A few more starts in July and August isn't going to change that

Why is Garza the first pitcher out of the gate when all are on full rest? Curious what the reasoning is for that.

Khris Davis is the Chris Carter of the outfield. Below average defense, great power, and not much else. Actually, at least Carter can draw a walk. If Nottingham can stick at catcher, this trade will be a win. I don't think Davis has added any trade value since April.

So that's the plan? Winning in 2021? Where do I get my World Series tickets? I love how the Brewers have snowed fans into actually believing they can target within a year when to a. try to start winning and b. actually winning so they can accept abject failure in the interim. Sports don't work that way. There's front offices in Chicago, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati who are all working to prevent that from happening and in 3 of the 4 spots, they have better track records than the Brewers' front office. Put a major league quality team on the field and develop the talent below that better. If you do your job, eventually you'll win. Predicting when that will be is fool's gold. Part of developing the talent below is acquiring talent at those levels, which often requires trading MLB talent. So unfortunately the reality of a rebuild in MLB is that it's just not realistic to rebuild while putting the best possible MLB team on the field in the interim. Also, you mention Chicago, but they just went through the same thing. They were able to get through it a little quicker than we probably will but they still has to step back from putting a MLB quality team on the field to get to where they are now.

Right. Losing a star for a comp pick is fine when you're competing, so we can justify letting Prince go for comp since we did win the division and compete in 2011. When you're rebuilding, you better get something for your best trade chips. Now this certainly doesn't mean you take a bad deal, but we'll get a worthwhile deal for Lucroy. I find it impossible to believe that 1 1/2 years of one of the best catchers in baseball on a cheap contract won't garner a high bid from someone at the end of July. There's still plenty of time to get a deal done, most blockbusters don't come this early. Remember when the Gomez trade to the Mets fell through at the last second last year? We basically had to start all over right near the deadline, and we still got a good deal done. -

I think it would be a massive disappointment to get a comp pick for Lucroy. It's hard to pin down the exactly value of a comp pick, but it's probably safe to assume that a guy picked in the 25-35 range on draft day, years away in development, probably has on average less than a 50/50 shot of even making it to the bigs. -
And again Villar is going to make a lot more outs than most others at 3rd because he takes a lot more chances and gets a lot more extra bases and opportunities. Do I agree Villar should clean up his baserunning, of course. He's a work in progress. It's not like we're going to be competing for a WS this year. As stoutdude just pointed out Villar is basically on pace for what Altuve did as far as baserunning mistakes last year. So IMO the angst is a bit overblown. Villar is one of the best things to happen to this team in the first half yet instead or a thread about those successes we only have one talking about his mistakes.

It's not surprising that Villar has made many more outs on the bases than Lucroy, Braun, and Carter, who are all pretty much station to station guys. It comes with his style of play. Fangraphs grades out Villar, as they have every season, as a slightly above average baserunner. So the good he does on the bases has still outweighed the boneheaded mistakes. If you would have told me at the beginning of the year that Villar would be still leading off daily, getting on base 38% of the time and hitting .300 and leading MLB in stolen bases and people would want to run him out of town, I wouldn't have thought it possible. Mark A. was on TV today and discussing Villar's baserunning mistakes and noted that he's still learning and that no one feels as bad about his mistakes as him. That doesn't sound like a guy that Mark A thinks is a selfish player. With some of these young aggressive guys, you've got to take the bad with the good and hope they learn along the way. As a rebuilding team, we can definitely afford to do that right now. For whatever reason, people just get so disgusted with guys like Carlos Gomez that anyone who reminds them of him is instantly met with disdain. Well, Carlos Gomez is not the reason we're rebuilding now. Carlos Gomez was a really, really good player for us, mistakes and all. Villar is a really good player now too, and I'll take a guy like him every time over having to re-experience guys like Izturis and Betancourt manning the position.

I can't for the life of me understand the venom on here for Villar. You were just complaining in the game thread how the Brewers pissed away 1st and 3rd with 0 outs and Villar was a huge reason why. Are you serious? I literally admitted in my last post that he makes boneheaded mistakes. I can't complain about that when it happens without wanting to grab a pitchfork and run him out of town?

I can't for the life of me understand the venom on here for Villar. Yes, he takes a lot of risks and makes knucklehead outs. He also makes a lot of great baserunning plays. His 31 stolen bases before the AS break, that helps us. He also hits .300 and gets on base, as a shortstop. He's also young and cost-controlled. You'd think people would be thrilled that we got that kind of player for a minor league pitcher most had never heard of until we traded. Instead, people can't run him out of town fast enough because they don't like the way he plays the game.

Here's an interesting question. ..what is the success rate scoring from 2nd on a single? (which I'm sure we can all agree is basically 100% from 3rd). It's referred to as scoring position , but it's not a certain run on a hit. 3rd is. I'm sure the success rate is higher with 2 out, though.
