  1. Eh, he's not going to bring back anything of value, but if you can get a million in a salary dump and add a low level arm for organizational depth, sure, why not.
  2. Listening on the radio and that one scared me half to death.
  3. These K's with a runner on 3rd and 1 out are just killing us. 2 routine fly balls in these situations instead and it's 2-2.
  4. I always hear about how bad Carter's defense is, but more often than not I see him scooping those low throws and saving errors. On eye test alone he sure feels far superior to what we had with Juan Francisco.
  5. Too bad we squandered that chance in the first, because we're going to need to put up a crooked number with Peralta on the mound.
  6. Just don't expect much. I'd say something around what we got for Aramis at best. Some salary relief and a lottery ticket arm in A ball.
  7. Probably a prorated portion of the MLB minimum, since that's all they'd be on the hook for. We'd still be on the hook for what we signed him for, pretty sure that's how it works.
  8. I absolutely agree you don't want pitchers out there giving up runs every inning. To me it's just frustrating that we finally have a solid bullpen (for the most part, I don't think much of Cappy and especially Boyer) of younger, hard throwing relievers in a rebuild when we could've used arms like them in 2008 and 2011 when it actually mattered instead of like the two or maybe three reliable arms we had. I have to nitpick this point because we had a very solid bullpen in 2011. 2008 was pretty good, too. There were some older veteran arms in both cases but the overall results were there.
  9. I've actually enjoyed the season more than I thought I would. Unless you're just totally tanking, which we're not yet, there still should be some balance between trying to play young guys and trying to field your best team. Yeah, Hill plays too much, but Walsh is not a real prospect. He's a total utility lottery ticket. Broxton should probably play more and probably will, but again, these guys like Broxton and Flores are just filler. We're not talking real prospects. Santana is, and Counsell has been good about playing him every single day when healthy. I guarantee if Phillips comes up, or Arcia comes up, it won't be to ride the bench. Niewenhuis didn't really start getting this much time until Broxton went down, so we'll see what happens now. Plus I'm sure the thinking is that if him or Hill have any value at the deadline they won't hesitate to deal them and get even younger.
  10. Counsell managed extras brilliantly tonight. It's refreshing to see a manager not save his closer on the road for the lead only to lose it first and blankly ask reporters after the game, 'Well who was I supposed to have close the game if I didn't have my closer? '
  11. Ugh. I think he missed it. I get not reversing it, but I don't know how you reverse the play at 1st last inning then.
  12. He's safe. To me it's more conclusive than the out last inning.
  13. Close play, but this is just getting laughable at 1st. Guy can't get a single call right.
  14. Ugh Carter. Had some great pitches to hit. Ill note yet again that this game would be long over by now with a competent first base umpire.
  15. I don't know if it's his vision, his attention span, or what it is, but this first base umpire is not qualified to do his job. Plain and simple. Neither of these check swings were close. We're not talking about ones that could have gone either way.
  16. I can never decide if Jeffress should 'count' as a 1st round pick of ours panning out. We took him in the 1st. Traded him. He was DFAed, winded up back here, and now full circle, he looks like the closer we thought he'd be someday.
  17. I haven't heard a peep about Rymer Liriano lately. Would be nice to get him back with how little Flores and Broxton are doing. I don't love everything about how Counsell manages, but I absolutely love that he actually uses his brain managing the bullpen in extras and doesn't just adhere to strict conventional 'wisdom'.
  18. Broxton is your classic AAAA player. Too good for AAA, but can't hack it in the bigs.
  19. I say go with Jeffress here. Got the meat of the order coming up in the 10th, just get it there.
  20. There's nothing they can do, it's not like they can review it. It's his job to get the call right and he blew it, plain and simple. Anyone who has gone to a game and sat down the lines knows that you can tell from all the way out by the poles whether a guy went around or not. The only way to blow that call when its that obvious just not paying attention. Luc should have just taken off for the dugout and might have gotten the call like he did earlier in the game. Since that umpire obviously needs help making the correct call you may as well help him get it right.
  21. First base and third base umpires who miss a check swing that badly should be disciplined. It's flat out neglect of your job. Beckham strikes out, but because the first base umpire just flat out isn't paying attention, it costs us 2 runs. Sorry this is a huge pet peeve of mine. It's hard enough for 25 players to win an MLB game without it hinging on 1 'professional' umpire's lack of discipline and vigilance to pay attention for 3 hours.
  22. I would have no idea how to research it but I would bet a lot that we are either at the top or near the top of baseball in strikeouts looking.
