  1. Has everyone gotten over their annual "it looks like this may be the year Gomez breaks out!". rush of excitement by now?
  2. That was actually a good at-bat by Izturis by his standards, which tells you how low my expectations have gotten for Izzy.
  3. I already gave you another option. Aoki/Hart/Braun/Ramirez/Weeks/Maldanado/Gomez/Ransom. I'll grant you that Melvin screwed up by going into this season with Izturis as the backup at 3 positions, but RR isn't blameless in this mess. People thought that with having Axford/K-Rod for the whole year, the bullpen would be in great shape. He still has the defending MVP, he has some very good catchers, he still has Greinke/Gallardo/Marcum at the top of his rotation, and he got Ramirez and Aoki, and still has Hart and Weeks, who has done little this year til lately. It's not like Roenicke has absolutely no talent to work with on this team. I hear one crowd of people that say, "This team is so talented, how can they be this bad??" and another crowd of people that say, "No one could win with these players, we needed to build a better team!!" Well, which is it? Can't be both ways.
  4. If I could ask Doug Melvin one question, I would like to ask him what purpose Cezar Izturis serves on a professional MLB level baseball team. Be honest with me Doug, it's clearly not baseball-related. Does he give really good backrubs, or what? Good to see that Wolf is consistent, and can suck out of the bullpen just as well as he can suck in the rotation.
  5. You're right, it's not a video game, it's real life. And in real life, the act of getting on base is the most important quality for a leadoff hitter. Not speed, good defense, or being a good bunter. Getting on base. There is no law that says your #2 hitter needs to be a good bunter, and there are options. There is nothing wrong with having a good power hitting #2 hitter. That's actually a great option if you want to bat the pitcher 8th is having a guy like Hart bat 2nd. So with that in mind, there is nothing wrong with a lineup like Aoki/Hart/Braun/Ramirez/Weeks/Maldanado/Gomez/Ransom. And if you want, you can certainly put Lucroy at #2 and bump Hart back to #5 and Weeks back a spot when he returns. Carlos Gomez has a .283 on base percentage. In no world and on no other team is a leadoff hitter who gets on base 28% of the time acceptable. There is not a lot of good "on base" guys on this team, but your worst does not belong at the top.
  6. This should be true of every player at any given time. Why limit your options? My car isn't for sale, but if you offer me double the blue book, I'm going to hand you the keys.
  7. Yeah, we were still 15th out of 16th in the NL in bullpen ERA before yesterday. Our pen hasn't looked good at any point this season.
  8. I wouldn't put much stock into winning a few close ones in a row. Nothing more than random luck. I also can't really concur with the general consensus on bunting here. Bunting excessively doesn't make you a bigger scoring threat, it makes you more predictable. Part of the advantage of bunting is the element of surprise, and there is absolutely no element of surprise in our bunting anymore. You're not going to bunt for too many base hits when it's constantly anticipated. I would be very surprised if there is any statistical evidence that excessive bunting leads to more errors and misplays by the opposition. You have 27 outs to work with in a game, and especially for a power-oriented team, I can't see how giving away 20% of those outs makes your offense better. I understand it late in a tie game or 1 run game where it's worthwhile to sacrifice the chance of a multiple run inning for a better chance to score 1. Yesterday with 1 out, we sacrificed our #8 hitter to put a RISP for our pitcher with 2 outs. Granted, Izturis sucks, but no matter how you look at it, I can't make sense of it. Sac bunting your #8 hitter to give your pitcher a 2 out AB with RISP. That's insane.
  9. You probably meant Kranitz? Somebody should go. Cant Melvin get one scrap heap guy to replace somebody??? Qualls Fuentes oCarraso any of these guys that are being let go by other teams (yes, i know Qualls was claimed) No, Kyles, the bullpen coach.
  10. Stan Kyles needs to be canned. I'm not saying its his fault, but its not one player, its an epidemic. There needs to be some accountability.
  11. At this very moment, not a single reliever in the Brewers bullpen has an ERA under 4.00, in July. K-Rod should change that as soon as he records an out, but I would like to know if this is the first such instance of that in MLB history.
  12. I hear this a lot, but the problem with this line of thinking IMO is that it takes nothing into consideration other than FA value. If you invest in your farm system, perhaps international prospects like we did with Aoki, get young 0 to 6 players in trade, and extend your own players early in exchange for team-friendly rates, your $10M can stretch a lot farther. Lucroy is far cheaper than $10M a year for a long time, and Braun isn't going to be making more than $10M a year until 2015. Gallardo would be worth probably $15M a year or so on the open market, but he's only owed $11.25M in his last contract year with us. Marcum is worth pretty considerably more than Wolf and made quite a bit less than $10M in his last arby year. That's the basic problem with the FA system in baseball and why teams with limited payrolls are IMO pretty much screwed long-term if they don't have a strong internal system. And if you're going to dabble in the free agent system, it makes a lot more sense to me to invest $15M in a #1/#2 type starter than $10M in a #4 starter and $5M in a fringe starting infielder. Even if Wolf isn't "overpaid" relative to his FA value (his FA value when he started with us -- he isn't getting $10M a year again after this year), it doesn't mean that he's a good buy.
  13. #1 - If we're paying Wolf $10M a year for a 4.40 - 4.80 ERA, we really need to reconsider our investments. #2 - In that case, your definition of "fine" is a very optimistic assumption of Wolf carrying a 3.39 ERA the rest of the season, which is exactly what he will need to do to put together a 4.60 ERA, the midpoint of your projection for him.
  14. (Diet Coke spit take) An ERA around 4.25 from Wolf would be fine. One near 6 in July is most certainly not. Also, I love how you were quite critical of me when I simply inquired as to whether or not Kottaras had any legitimate trade value, and now you're flat out suggesting that we trade him.
  15. Guys like Fiers give us hope for the near future. Frankly, a month ago, I had no idea how we were going to construct a rotation next year. Now, if we somehow did bring back Greinke, even losing the others, a rotation of Greinke/Gallardo/Fiers/Estrada/Thornburg looks pretty darn good, plus reinforcements possibly nearing with Nelson/Jungmann/Bradley. In Peralta's last two starts, he has gone 12 2/3rds and has given up no runs. I can only hope it's a sign of a turnaround for him, because we desperately need him to be at least a #3 type pitcher in our rotation to have success in the next couple years.
  16. Izzy has had a poor defensive game too. A booted ball, and another play where Greinke was ready to fire to second where Izzy was supposed to be covering but instead he's just chilling out in the infield and Greinke had to go to 1st. Izturis is total crap.
  17. Just want to make sure that was our player on the basepaths there? That totally looked like something that usually happens the other way.
  18. Hart doesn't get a single strike thrown to him and still manages not to reach. Well done Corey!
  19. I feel like we have been saying something along the lines of this since mid-May with every "easy" stretch on our schedule.
  20. Wolf was a very good #4 last year, an okay one in 2010, and a very bad one this year. I'm not bitter towards him, but I don't know why people have to pretend that he was some great FA signing. If what we have gotten from him over the course of 3 years is "market value", then I think we should stay far away from signing anymore FA starting pitchers. Wolf is a textbook example of the consequences of not being able to develop your own starting pitching. You end up having to overpay for "market value" and dish out $30M for 3 years of the same production that you should be getting from a 0-3 player in your system for a fraction of the cost.
  21. Is this supposed to be in blue? Randy Wolf's ERA is going to be almost 6. In July. Currently he is a bad pitcher. And $8.5M is a lot more than a small price to pay.
  22. I'm going to state the obvious. Randy Wolf sucks. If we inexplicably pick up his option, I'm going to have a very hard time following this team next year.
