  1. Barring a surprising big move at a veteran SS in free agency this year (and I don't think there are many goods ones this offseason, are there?) , I'm sure we fully intend on Segura playing SS for us. I would be fine with an average defensive SS. I wish it wasn't range he was giving up, but as long as everything else is good, we can live with it. JJ Hardy had very poor range, too.
  2. I'm not doubting Fiers' success, but can anyone explain why he was doing just so-so down at AAA this year and all of the sudden just comes up and lights it up? Is it just hitters seeing him for the first time? Or is the PCL just really that loaded with hitters parks that it inflates pitchers ERA's? Love what Fiers is doing, but in perspective, I would be happy if he turns out to be a career 4.00 ERA type of starter. Would be thrilled if he turns out to be a healthier version of Marcum.
  3. I don't think they will either, but I wish they would. I think it's going to be one of those things they sit on, miss the boat, and regret it. I think having that extra financial flexibility the next 2 years will be worth a lot more than having Ramirez for 2 more years. Trouble is, they won't do it because they have no adequate replacement for him and would be right back looking in free agency. Not saying that's the right rationale, but I think that's going to be their mindset. At this point, I'm not sure that the organization sees Green as more than a career backup infielder at the MLB level. They might be right, quite frankly.
  4. Why is Craig harping on not getting an MLB ready player in the trade? Do we look like a team that is going to need another player to be MLB ready yet this year?
  5. I'm really happy they preserved the shutout for Fiers after the hard luck he's had. He deserves it.
  6. I am excited as I'm sure most are to see what these guys will bring to the Brewers organization. For Segura, I think we might see his arrival by either June or so next year, or on opening day by default. I would be thrilled with an average defensive career SS with a .750 OPS and 30 SB or so a year as our regular #2 hitter. Hellweg has had a successful transformation from the pen to rotation. From what I've heard, maybe the ceiling of a #2? I would guess he's in the 2014 rotation, if he doesn't end up back in the pen. Pena has a very nice arm who could very well be some much needed help in the bullpen later next season. All are guys with upside who all have chances to be very successful at the MLB level. Anyone have some better insight, player comparisons, etc?
  7. So we were going to win the World Series with Prince and zero pitching? We had Prince and Braun together for years but it wasnt until we got pitching that we had a chance. But in our market we CANNOT afford Prince and a guy like Greinke. I am not a proponent of completely gutting our team as some are, but Fielder and Braun without pitching wasnt going to win us anything. We down have the farm system to make another Greinke trade. Only to lose that player in FA in another year or two after acquiring him. I LOVED the Greinke trade, and if the Brewers consistently do things like that on a yearly basis, I could live with it. But I betcha they won't. Are you just messing with us, or are you serious? You don't want to ever trade proven players for prospects, but yet you want to be able to somehow pull off a trade for a Zack Greinke type player every year. Not to mention have the payroll to support it. Do you seriously not see the many flaws in this argument?
  8. A) We are not winning this year B) Zack Greinke is a FREE AGENT at the end of this year Honestly, how is hanging onto Zack Greinke conducive to us winning next year or after? Please explain. I am sorry, but IMO this is a completely irrational approach. What do you want them to do, offer Greinke 5 years and $150 million? Jack up the payroll to $200M? Please tell me your approach. I think your plan of "I would've told them I want Trout or to get bent" tells us about all we need to know about the rationality of your plan.
  9. I'm very excited for this and I think it's a great, and necessary move. Yet there is a part of me that for some reason, feels a bit of sadness -- not about the move itself...but just about the fact that we've turned into regular buyers, not sellers, and this almost feels like the end of an era in a way. We haven't seen a move like this for the Brewers in a long, long time, and it of course definitely signals the official white flag on the season, not that we needed an official one. Don't get me wrong though -- absolutely a great move. Sure beats the supplementary draft pick.
  10. Does anyone think that maybe Sveum should have had his shot after 2008? He seemed to be one that would be liked and respected by his players - but also not have the baseball intelligence of a turnip.
  11. I don't think anyone has suggested trading Zack Greinke yet.
  12. So looking forward to never seeing Izturis in a Brewers uniform again in about 2 months.
  13. This. Firing Kyles would be firing someone just for the sake of firing someone. I know this is irrational, but I almost feel like this wouldn't be such a bad thing right now (firing someone for the sake of it). Also, I have a really hard time believing that the bullpen coach isn't a "pitching coach" in his own right. Shouldn't he be someone well-versed in pitching as well -- looking for mechanical flaws, noticing velocity differences, changes in arm motion, etc? Not saying that what you guys are saying isn't the case, it just seems like a dude earning 6 figures solely to answer the bullpen phone, get guys warmed up, etc, is pretty overpaid.
  14. That's a fair point and probably a pretty strong reason for why the Brewers prefer to reload rather than a full rebuild. Braun is in the prime of his career and probably has no interest in wasting those years playing for 60 win teams.
  15. I think it's a little much to say it would be stupid to trade him. It would be really extreme, yes, and be a pretty big statement about the rebuilding state of the team. If you traded Gallardo, you would want the highest upside prospects, no need for them to be even close to MLB ready. It would be a strategy, though, just not one I ever see them doing. I do not understand, though, why when people suggest trading somebody, people rebut by posting their numbers and saying, "Well, they're really good." Well of course they are. That's why other team's would give us a lot for them. Good players tend to get a lot more back in trade than bad players.
  16. Gallardo is a good, solid, #2 type pitcher IMO. Short of being an ace, but he's not a middle of the rotation guy, and one outing tonight doesn't change that. I'd consider it because Gallardo probably has a lot of value, is only signed for 2 more years anyway (although with an option for a 3rd), and I don't think we're going to be competitive for the next two years anyway. I'd have to be pretty blown away, though. I don't think that it's something that the Brewers will consider, because of their usual "reload but not rebuild" mentality. I would be very surprised if they don't try to put things in place in this offseason with being a contender in 2013 in mind. So if you want to blow the whole thing up and start from scratch, sure, trade Gallardo. But I highly doubt they'd go that route or even consider it.
  17. Not really, just Wolf mostly. Plus Fiers has been amazing. Why doesn't anyone ever call for Stan Kyles' head? He's the bullpen coach, and the bullpen has been a lot more of the problem than the pitching staff as a whole.
  18. I can't think of any logical reason that I still waste hours every day watching this garbage. I think the explanation is probably the car accident analogy.
  19. He's just posturing, although I don't really know why. Every GM knows what kind of position we're in, so it's not like Melvin can play the "Well, we don't HAVE to trade him" card for leverage. His leverage comes from getting multiple bidders. He'll take the best offer he can get, which will be worth more than a supplementary draft choice. He would have his house surrounded by an angry mob with burning torches and pitchforks if he stands pat.
  20. I don't agree with this. Prospects like Mike Trout are rare, but plenty of prospects go on to have successful MLB careers at least. "99 out of 100" is hyperbole.
  21. Agree that Roenicke is an awful, awful manager, who is unfortunately well-liked which makes him overrated and harder to get rid of. Disagree that the Greinke decision was bad. We had everything to lose and nothing to gain by one more inning of him.
  22. Do you think Melvin has the audacity to ask other GM's what they would be willing to give him for K-Rod?
  23. When you post it like this, it's very misleading because it implies to thread viewers that this has actually occurred, when as of this time it's still just your opinion that this will occur.
