  1. Comes with the territory, and Yost knows it. There isn't a single fanbase that doesn't have some people that want to can their manager at some point during the year. That's life. But, I agree there's plenty of fans who don't understand baseball. I cannot even fathom that anyone would blame tonight's game on Yost. That's just hilarious. We lost tonight because Wise and Cordero blew a 5 run lead. There's no reason to look to point fingers anywhere else.
  2. I can't believe how bad this loss deflated my spirits. It's like I don't even care what happens in the Mets/Cubs game right now. It's amazing that things can do such a 180 within like 20 hours.
  3. Well, we're going on a 6 game road trip now, and after the most disgusting loss of the season. It doesn't look good. I still can't believe we didn't win today. I'm just in shock. I assumed it was a done deal. It's like my boss called me into his office, told me I was getting promoted, then laughed a little and said I was actually fired.
  4. When do we get a chance to pay them back for this one?
  5. Hmm. Should I or should I not stick around to watch Yost make a smirky face at the questioning reporter, and say "It happens, guys. Give credit to the Phillies lineup. They battled. Cordero has been one of the best in the game all year. Losses like this happen".
  6. Would love to see it, but how many games this season have we actually recovered from more than 3 runs down in a winning effort?
  7. I am pretty certain that my grandmother could steal off us.
  8. As far as I know, we were never in the Barry Zito sweepstakes. Nevertheless, I agree, I am glad we didn't end up with him. I have long thought Zito to be one of the most overrated starters in the league. As for Washburn, definitely glad we didn't land him. I know we made him an offer, but as it would turn out, luckily he went elsewhere for more money. This all doesn't excuse the Suppan signing, however. The Suppan signing would have been a good one -- to a team willing to pay that much to close out the back of their rotation. With Gallardo coming up, who can likely already exceed Suppan's production even at a young age, and Parra, who can probably match his numbers in a full season, it doesn't seem like the Suppan signing was a necessary one. Hindsight is 20/20, but it seems that money could have been better spent elsewhere.
  9. I've made some comments over recent weeks about how disappointing Suppan is this season. Seems like the popular response I got is, "He's not that far off from his career numbers. He's been mostly as expected." My first thoughts on this -- really? Is this it? Is this what we paid $42 million for? A guy with #4 - #5 pitcher type numbers? It just seems baffling to me, with all the good moves he has made, that Melvin would pay that much for a guy who esseentially made a big contract off the NLCS. He isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Until the majority of the no-trade clause is lifted in 2009, we're stuck with Suppan, so no matter how bad he does, he's more or less in the rotation. He's not a spring chicken anymore, and so I don't really see him getting better. Considering his career ERA, is this all we're going to get for this $42 million? A back of the rotation #4 - #5 type pitcher?
  10. Well who is in first is really nothing more than a conversation piece on our part. But let's say this was the end of the season, we were 86-76 and the cubs were 85-75. Yes the Cubs would be percentage points ahead, but the season would never end like that. Like Ennder said, they would hypothetically still require a tiebreaker. But MLB wouldn't go there. They'd make the Cubs play their last 2 games even if they had been cancelled. If they won 'em both, they'd go. Lost 'em both, we'd go. Split, 1 game tiebreaker with us. Like I said, it's really nothing more than a conversation piece on our part because it's not going to come to that. If the Cubs get 1 game cancelled without a makeup date and finish the season 1/2 game ahead of us, they don't win the division just yet. They're playing that missed game. If they didn't, conspiracy theories would run wild, that's for sure.
  11. Technically we're both in 1st. Yes the Cubs have the percentage points, but if the season ended today, it would go to a tiebreaker game. 0 GB each. If it comes down to it, MLB would never let a game not be played that would have factored into deciding something in the race.
  12. Whew, the Phillies are going to hold on. I guess I'll take the small victory today of still somehow being in first place. That's about all we have to cling to right now.
  13. The only thing that could make this day worse is the Cubs coming back from down 7-1 to win and take sole possession of first place. The Phillies are up to the task. Now 7-6 in the 8th, Cubs threatening.
  14. We just lost yet another series, this one at home. Our starting pitching has stunk this year. The bullpen, awful right now. We are an absolute joke trying to muster together a clutch, late hit. We're now an atrocious 34-41 since our big 24-10 start. That's completely unacceptable for this team, it's an okay run for the 2003 Brewers. Not these Brewers. 13 wins in our last 40 road games. 13. The schedule the rest of the way is tough. Is there anyone right now, based on something other than complete homerism, that thinks we still have a chance to win this division? Is 82 wins going to be too much to ask?
  15. Turnbow is an extremely effective reliever when he is on. However, when it rains, it absoultely pours for Turnbow. Knowing that, and knowing how much he struggles with runners in scoring position, here's what I propose: If 2 consecutive hitters in an inning reach against Turnbow, he's gone. Doesn't matter if they're the first two, or he retires the first two and then two reach, if he allows two straight hitters to reach in any way, pull him. If he walks the leadoff man, get someone warming, but leave him in. Sometimes he turns it around, gets a double play, whatever. Simple, and I think it could help alleviate some of the huge innings that he is prone to.
  16. Trading Weeks now, when he value has dropped so much but he still has so much talent, would be a very poor move and not up Melvin's alley. I don't see any chance a deal for Gagne goes through. The Rangers are asking the Yankees for two great pitching prospects, one being Hughes. Since they'd obviously be looking at similar compensation from us, it's not going to happen. Can't believe the Rangers are looking for so much, for a 2 month rental? We got far less for Lee. It's not happening. It would be contingent on Gagne approving the trade, too.
  17. Great job by Hamels. I'm hoping we can get a hit off him when we face him later this week, before the 7th inning, unlike last game. But....Cubs lose....as miserable as the last week has been, I'll take it. People are just assuming they'll catch us, now. Let's widen the gap tommorow.
  18. Sheets is another guy that has to be added, surprisingly. 2.64 home ERA vs 4.28 away ERA. We're talking most of our starters and our best relievers that struggle significantly compared to their home numbers. Generally, most pitchers are going to have a little bit better numbers at home, but not to this signficance. This awful run on the road isn't a youth problem, it's a pitching problem. I don't know what else we can do. We've stocked the rotation and bullpen with as much additional talent as we possibly can in the last year (Suppan, Linebrink, Villanueva, Cordero...Vargas is an excellent #5). Short of bringing in an ace starter or elite closer, which isn't going to happen, there just isn't much we can do, other than hope they can stop choking away the close road games.
  19. I'm not having fun, but I'm not even remotely ashamed to admit it. Losing isn't fun. Yes, it's a game, and yes, games are supposed to be fun. But we all know perfectly well that winning is what we are looking for, and that's what brings the enjoyment out of the game. I think what takes the fun out of it so much for me right now is the fact that I feel so let down. A month ago, I felt like the playoffs were more or less a lock. I didn't listen to people who said we were the Brewers and we would collapse. Now not only are we losing, but I almost feel like we're justifying everything they and the critics say, and that just adds to the bad feelings. I know, I know, nothing that happens in the team's past determines the future. Still, how can you not think about it? It's like being cheated on by 15 straight girlfriends and trying to actually believe that this time, it might be different, because you're certain you have a better one this time. Sure, you have no reason to believe that anything in your past will determine anything that happens, but what else do you have to go by? If this was a few years ago, I'd be elated right now to be here at this point in the season, because finally, a team would have brought hope to Milwaukee, and a team worth still watching in August. But hope isn't good enough anymore. We need results before anyone is going to believe that we're going to do more than choke down the stretch and once again watch the playoffs from home.
  20. I would definitely agree that the pitching has been the main culprit. I know sometimes it seems like our bats fall silently for indefinite periods of time, but we don't struggle to hit disproportionately on the road in comparison to home, as Ennder pointed out. Right now, there's not a team in the NL that they believe they can beat in a series away from Miller Park. Our last 4 road series' were against the Pirates, Nationals, Reds, and Cardinals, and we managed 1 win in each series. That's just not going to instill much confidence. If they don't figure out how to at least be competiitive on the road, hold leads on the road, and win close games on the road, they're not going to the playoffs. That's all. 21-32 on the road isn't acceptable for a mediocre team. Some teams with better road records than us: Orioles, Royals, Nationals. There are 5 teams in BASEBALL with worse road records than us. That's old-Brewer'esque. And we want to be contenders? It's not happening with this kind of play on the road. And I don't believe that the "young team" explanation is the answer, either. It hasn't been the young guys. The lineup production has been similar both at home and on the road, pretty preportionate to what the splits should be. The rotation, on the other hand, doesn't have a single starter under 4.08 on the road, and that's Vargas, who has been the only regular starter not to be considerably worse on the road. Cordero, our veteran closer, has obviously been the biggest culprit in awful road pitching.
  21. While I don't think the Brewers will finish under .500, it's certainly not out of the question whatsoever. These kids have no confidence whatsoever in themselves right now, especially on the road, where they seemingly cannot beat ANY team. It's not going to get any easier. The homestand includes New York and Philly. August closes with a brutal road trip which includes the Diamondbacks, Giants, and Cubs. Other road series' include the Rockies, which will be a major challenge, and the Astros. I'd like to think that we can count on 2 of 3 in Houston, but at this point, I don't think there is a team in the league that we should be favored over in a series on the road. I will say this. We'll know if this team is going to be in it until the end by the end of August. They could step it up, go 8-7 on the road, and continue winning at home. Or they could completely fold up the tent, win 10 games in the month, and struggle the rest of the season to stay above .500. I think we'll still have our first winning season since '92, but that doesn't mean that's good enough. If the team does in fact find a way to slip under .500 to finish the season, I will predict Yost will be gone. There's just no way that a team with this much talent should be a .500 team.
  22. Brewers, Brewers, keep turning up the heat! Do you guys remember early in the season, when if we had a lead after the 7th, no matter how small, we could pretty much just shut it off and tack it up in the win column? Yeah, that was kind of fun. It was more fun than the current situation with a small lead after 7 innings, which is placing bets on whether our setup man or closer will be the one to squander the lead.
  23. I just don't understand the lovefest with Gwynn. He's a punch-and-judy that doesn't hit for enough average or have a good enough OBP to justify him being in the lineup every day. Terrible OPS, and with our team's ability to play smallball, the times he does pop a hit to short center would probably be squandered anyway. He does play better defense than Hall, but great CF defense is not going to help us hold onto the division at this point. Hall is a mainstay in our lineup for the next few years, Gwynn, not necessarily. Hall has finally adusted to CF and I don't think a change is in order. If we're not going to have the patience with Weeks to stick it out with him for the year and want to demote him back to AAA, we'd be better off just platooning Graffy and Counsell at 2B, as horrible as that sounded earlier in the year.
  24. That's a pretty good point. Some of us through out the textbook excuses. If we blow a save, "All closers blow saves". If we don't rally from behind in the 9th ever, it's "It's tough to rally against the other team's best bullpen pitcher". Well, which is it? If all closers blow saves, why can't we ever be the ones to blow the saves for them? This team has the talent and should be better than their record indicates. It would be an utter failure to see them fall short of the playoffs this season.
  25. Great! As if today wasn't bad enough already, now Cappy is Crappy. I guess we're figuring, why get our young guy his first win when we can just get their's his first? I cannot believe how much my mood has swung in the last 4 1/2 hours about this team. Hours ago, we were feeling great, up 6-0, chased the Cardinals starter out early, had a fresh pen, and a great matchup to look forward to tonight. Now our "elite" closer blew another one, we pissed away a 6 run lead, the Cubs are blowing out the Reds, and we have proven once again our inability to win on the road. I've waited too long for a competitive team for this. I'm as starving for a winning team as all of you. But this team is not a winning team, and they won't be until they figure out how to at least be competitive on the road. This kind of road play just isn't nearly good enough.
