Seems like a great way to ensure that you no longer occasionally crack the lineup.

If Chourio is on 3rd with 2 outs and you think you can sneak a bunt single RBI in, that’s totally different and potentially very smart. With Chourio on 2nd it really makes no sense. Even if you lay it down perfectly and somehow reach, now all you’ve done is just deferred to the next guy hoping he can drive him in.

Can’t say if he did that on his own, but yeah, that’s not a situation to try to lay one down.

Gilbert is good enough without needing to give him a couple inches out of the zone.

Miz is incredibly gifted, but there are going to be some nights when he’s not very efficient. Tonight would be one of them.

Yeah, I agree. This is all probably a moot point. Unless a team is in a hopelessly deep rebuild, even most sellers aren’t interested in selling their controllable young talent.

IMO we are getting a little over the top with the Ortiz defensive love around here. The fear that’s been expressed that the entire left side of the infield defense is going to seemingly fall apart with any SS besides Ortiz isn’t really supported by any rational metric. Abrams is like a kajillion times better than Ortiz at baseball. I get that we don’t want to rock the boat too much on this team but we shouldn’t be afraid to add a really good player to replace a 66 OPS+ everyday hitter.

I don’t know, Abrams isn’t having his best defensive year but his track record suggests he’s going to be fine there. I agree that the original proposal isn’t enough. I don’t think Washington is really going to have any interest in dealing Abrams.

Fair assessments. Thanks for the replies. I do think there are situations where the defensive skills of struggling offensive players tend to get exaggerated, but I’d agree in this case that the disagreement between DRS and FRV combined with what we’ve seen would also cause me to question the accuracy of the single season DRS for Ortiz. -

Your posts seem to indicate that you think Ortiz is one of the best defensive shortstops in the majors, while analytics grade him as basically average. This isn’t a criticism of you, because I know many people feel that way. I want to pose the honest question, why is it that we tend to live and die by metrics around here, but when it comes to Ortiz, we say “nah, metrics be damned, I know when the eye test tells me”. Again, this is a criticism of no one. Just a genuine question. As fans, do we often slightly inflate what we see defensively from sub par offensive players, subconsciously “compensating”? Subconsciously, are we more prone to downplaying defensive abilities when the player hits well? Surely there are SS out there that do both well. -

Well, I would definitely feel optimistic that we’d advance past the Wild Card round! Since we’d be in the drivers’ seat for the #1 seat by probably 10-15 games in mid August by that point. -

It’s crazy to me that a lineup with no one higher than a .790 OPS can somehow be 4th in the NL in runs scored. I’d like some historian to confirm that we are the first team in MLB history to have the best record in MLB after 100 games with no hitters over an .800 OPS.

Gotcha, I didn’t see that. The pitch count seems low but he’s still early on coming back from a major injury, so I’m sure if he’s hit his limit he knows it.

Why? I don’t know if he’s even at 60 pitches.

He’s 7th in RF, 10th in fielding percentage and 46th in dWAR. I mean he’s fine but he’s not irreplaceably phenomenal. There are other equally capable defensive shortstops.
