  1. Jeffress' third inning: called strike ?? strike ball outside ball up & in (fastball) foul foul out (Gindl was positioned near the line) grounder to first (Errecart booted it but recovered to get the out, tossing to Jeffress) ?? (two balls and a strike) swinging strike check-swing ball check-swing ball low ?? strike ball in dirt swinging strike ball inside (Jeffress missed badly; Maldonado set up outside) swinging strike The Mets announcer mentioned that St. Lucie never tuns the gun on for visitors' halves of innings but that Jeffress is "throwing hard".
  2. Farris rips a line-drive homer following up Schafer's opposite-field double off the end of the bat.
  3. Second inning for Jeffress: called strike swinging strike ball in dirt (five feet in front of home) swinging strike ?? strike check-swing strike foul ball outside ball high (breaking ball) ground ball single wild pitch/passed ball ball up & in (fastball) check-swing foul ?? ball ball low ?? ball swinging strike called strike (fastball) swinging strike/caught stealing The second batter might be a window into Jeffress' surprising hittability at times. He thought the second ball was strike three, so he might have followed it up with a hittable pitch because he was frustrated, or maybe he was worried about going to a three-ball count. Did giving up the hit after being ahead in the count rattle him, causing him to throw a wild pitch on his next offering and walk the guy on five pitches? Anyway, the stuff is undeniable.
  4. I just turned on the Manatees game. Wow, the Mets' announcer sure is nasal.
  5. Lawrie's back in the starting lineup, so whatever happened yesterday can't have been that big of a deal.
  6. Former Brewers swap places: Tomo Ohka replaced Zach Jackson on the Indians roster.
  7. Former Brewers swap places: Tomo Ohka replaced Zach Jackson on the Indians roster.
  8. The thing to watch with Escobar is his splits. He's currently hitting .379/.406/.500 off LHP and just .244/.299/.331 against RHP. His overall numbers may go up if he runs into a spate of lefties, but real progress isn't being made unless his performance against righties improves. Last year, he was terrible initially against northpaws but eventually improved to post a respectable line against them (.314/.341/.419 vs. .381/.435/.497 against southpaws).
  9. By the way, that's agent39's JC Sulbaran dominating the non-Chris Dennis T-Rats tonight.
  10. It took me way too long to figure out why the first BC game ended after 8 innings.
  11. Buhner always had a good walk rate. If Katin had Buhner's patience, or even mediocre patience, he'd be in the big leagues by now; instead he has godawful patience.
  12. His sophomore year at VMI, Bowman struck out 110 in 99 innings. If he had done that again in his junior year, instead of the 82 in 91.2 he managed, I bet he would have gone before the 9th round. When I asked him about the dropoff, he said: That made me hopeful for his performance, and he's lived up to my expectations. Since he's 22 already, I'd like to see him get a promotion to Brevard and see what he can do there.
  13. Don't know if the box score is trustworthy, but if it is, Michael Bowman! Eight innings of one-run ball with an 8/1 K/BB and only 5 hits. Chris Dennis with another double and a walk; I told you guys, he was my sleeper for this year.
  14. First three Stars get on to start Game 2 and Rottino cashes it in with a double. Good for him.
  15. After striking out in his first two ABs, Lawrie hit a three-run bomb. His first HR since the 18th, though obviously he missed some time.
  16. Corey Kemp gunning for a "Men Among Boys" mention by Baseball America's Hot Sheet.
  17. Haha, whoever had Nick Bucci as the first 2008 draftee to clear A-ball, come on down and get your prize.
  18. The Orioles called up West De Pere grad Jason Berken.
  19. That may be true, but nobody who's seen Adams pitch this year has been impressed at all by his stuff. In the draft picks thread, you wrote: "[Adams] has touched 96, and sits in the 92-94 range with his fastball." He seems to working in the high 80s this year from all reports.
  20. I thought Dillard looked pretty good out of the pen last year; he was certainly throwing a lot harder than he does as a starter. I think he's a pretty solid bet to be a serviceable middle reliever, and that's a pretty good prospect in my book. I'm not sure why he was moved back to the rotation this year in Nashville, especially since, as colby mentioned, Reid Nichols has acknowledged that his future role is in the bullpen. Ultimately, his value is a prospect is something like his ceiling * his chance of reaching that, and while his ceiling is low, it's still that of a productive Major Leaguer, and he's pretty much reached it already. I wish he'd get another shot with the big club.
  21. The latter. Like the diminutive form of "William".
  22. Looks like the demotion didn't help Jeffress even out whatever is bothering him. His first Brevard appearance went much like recent his Huntsville ones, stretches of dominance--he fanned the last three hitters he faced, all swinging, and had six strikeouts overall in three innings--mixed with terrible control and a penchant for giving up extra-base hits with runners on base. At least Rogers and Braddock pitched well again, though Braddock only went one inning. He, Roque Mercedes, and Rob Wooten are really a murderous trio coming out of the pen for the Manatees. Taylor Green had a big game for Huntsville, and Omar Aguilar pitched a perfect ninth for once.
