  1. I am pretty sure for all 3 of those, the punchout was made by the field umpire on appeal. However, the field ump was standing behind the pitcher when the call was made, with no vantage point whatsoever of whether or not the batter went around. Now that I think about it you are right on one of those. The first K did go to the appeal to the ump behind the pitcher and he called him out. The other two were the home plate umps call as he pointed at the bat and punched em out...not calling for the appeal.
  2. A few notes.. Moss had a heck of a night at the plate as mentioned. Hit the ball hard to every part of the field. He made an error in center...a routine single...he even went down on one knee to stop it....ball still goes through his legs...2 base error...runner scores on sac fly to right. I don't envy these players with the field they play on at Beloit. Weird hops are common every game. Pena was getting shelled. The hits were everywhere. Nothing was hit hard till Majewski blasted a grand slam to center. Everything was bloop singles and grounders to the gaps. The Cougars starter took a no-hitter into the 4th...walked Lou..walked Heether....Vinny three-run job to center for the first hit. Truffles finally had a night where he didn't bunt...and went suprise suprise...3-4 with a triple and 3 runs scored. All were nice hits too...the triple was nearly an inside the park job to left center gap but he was held up as it would have been close. McKenna didn't have his best stuff. It was evident from when he was warming up. He spiked about 4 pitches in front of the catcher and that carried out onto the field when he relieved Pena. Dan also had the 2nd Beloit error with a pickoff attempt that ended up in the crowd on a two hopper. Don't know much about Wandel Campana but he reminds me of a Chas Terni out there at short. A bit scary....maybe not Terni bad but not great. Plus as a 27 year old in Beloit...uh yeah. He did hit the ball hard though. Will Lewis not out there which suprised me but a day off is ok too. I like watching him play. Some terrible calls tonight as I can count 4 times where Snappers batters were called out by check swings that "went to far around". That normally doesn't bother me having a bad call like that but each time were in critical positions. Two were in the bottom of the 8th with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Plus the one on Heether was so bad that Adam's bat hardly moved off his shoulder...it was just a twitch. Nearly had some nice action as runners on 1st and 2nd and a Cougar hits one to left....runner (Appert I believe) came bustling around 3rd...I wanted him to try out Deevers arm at the plate but Appert wisely spun back quickly...he would have been toast as Robby's arm is amazing...his bat on the other hand..I just wish it was half as good as his arm...he'd be batting about 300 now. Tony Gwynn bobbleheads today and it showed as a great crowd today of 2779 according to SportsNetwork. I would say biggest of the year that I have witnessed.
  3. Snappers lose slugfest 12-8... Great night for Moss 3-4, 2 2B, 1 3B and 4 RBI's Horrible night for Pena who gives up 8 er and 11 hits in 4.1 EDITED: removed duplicate box score -- MB
  4. A few notes from the All Star game. West 6 East 3 Very fun time. A few gripes...the autograph line was a joke....had like 5 tables lined up in a row...total bottleneck....the line had probably 250 people or more in it and approximately 35 got through the line before they swapped the players out for another "set"....horrible design...better chance for autographs was wandering around and getting players walking around. Also the amount of All-Star memorabilia was small. The pregame festivities took 30 minutes. MWL President Spelius, then the CR Director, then CR President, then CR Mayor..Then America the Beautiful long version then announce teams then you have a "Reggy" solo act, then finally national anthem...not done yet as a helicopter lands on the field delivering the bases....first pitch by Rob Dibble and another dude as well. Snapper notes: Truffles played whole game. West squad had 5 OF's and 2nd CF Span was on DL. Terrible night at the plate. 0-5 I believe. I chalk it up to not bunting everytime Money style. He made a nice diving catch though. Vinny had a single and scored the first run of the game. Had another rip that carried a bit far and was caught. Didn't look good during Home run Derby...had a chance on a couple...one off the wall and another deep enough but just foul in left. Luis Pena pitched to 2 batters...struck out the first on like 3 pitches. Next guy 3-1 then grounded out to second. night done Lou P was the 3rd catcher in during 7th inning. One at bat and grounded out to 3rd. Eveland warmed up in the 8th and 9th but no action. Perhaps left as the just in case man. Other Notes: Brandon Wood (CR) beat Scott Whitrock (QC) in the home run derby which was a joke. First round was 8 players and a total of 5 homers by 3 guys. Whitrock was mashing it in the finals...hit about 6 dingers that went foul....had 2 fair. Wood looked ok but barely won. Interesting note...Whitrock was an undrafted free agent out of MATC and is from Wisconsin Rapids. Reggy performed during the game and was funny except for one half inning he was coming onto the field DURING the game. He was screwing with the first base coach while action was happening...not cool in my books. Great crowd as 5,500+ were in attendance. Cedar Rapids is the only place I know that has a dance squad perform in between innings. Silent Auction for 3 bases autographed by every all-star. A nice touch....all 3 were won by Capn's Mom last time we saw. Nice to see fans from a lot of different teams there....especially Dayton which had quite a few. Peoria SS Brendan Ryan had a weird night...had an error in the first...next batter hits a rip job and he makes a fantastic spinning grab on the hot grounder. Top of 3rd hits a solo shot. Next inning has another error. Only errors of the night. Not a lot of chances to evaluate players during such a small sample but David Castillo (KC), starting catcher in the west had a perfect CS at third. Walker, a fast OF from Lansing had a huge jump from 2nd to 3rd. Castillo made a perfect throw that Brown (3b) just had to squeeze and drop for the tag. Great play. Also met his parents before the game while waiting in line. Mitch Maier, 2b from Burlington won MVP. He was I believe 3-4. Funny as they were presenting the award and he wasn't around...already in clubhouse and it took quite a few minutes to track him down and present the award. Brian Dopiriak from Lansing impressed me. He leads the league with 20 jacks. During BP he was mashing. Man among boys as he was hitting them out nearly everytime to all fields. During the homer contest all his shots were deep liners. Just the sound of his bat was so much sweeter than everyone else. Fireworks after the game were great. Nicely done. Great game, on a great night, at a great park. Well worth the trip in my opinion. Here's to next year's road trip to Peoria.
  5. I'll be making the jaunt to Cedar Rapids in a few hours to partake of the festivities. Should be a good time and I'll have a report and pics bright and early in the morning whenever I get back. Michael
  6. Well I just got back from the Quad Cities after an enjoyable evening in Davenport. A few notes: First off the renovated John O'Donnell Stadium is gorgeous. Lies right on the Mighty Mississippi, great view looking out towards the outfield, grass seating in left and right with a walkway that goes all the way around. Great scoreboard...top notch stadium. The second thing that impressed me with the Quad Cities were the fans. I can count about a half dozen times where someone walked up, out of the blue and asked us if we were from Beloit (I was wearing my Snappers jersey) and started talking about the stadiums of both teams and what not. Very friendly folks. Drew Anderson...looked mighty nice out there getting on base as Bill mentioned. That's my mofo. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Moss had a nice night at the plate....he missed on a diving attempt in Center that led to a triple. He was also thrown out at the plate coming around from second. The throw was a nice one from the outfield but I would give anyone 10-1 odds he didn't get tagged. Vinny Rottino with the start at...bum bum bum...catcher. He was doing pretty well back there. Problem was throwing out baserunners. Vinny has a strong arm, just not as quick to transfer ball from glove to hand and slow on the release. Gave up I believe 3 stolen bases. 1st would have been stolen on any catcher in history. Credit that one against Beresford. One was a sb of 3rd. Nice throw, and on target but late because slow transfer and he almost "cocks" the ball like a gun before throwing. He did have a caught stealing but it was a horrible call. The umpires view was blocked by Lewis and the runner was safe by a fair margin. Another bum call when the Snappers were rallying. Bases loaded for Vinny. Grounds to short...double play attempt turned. Vinny beat the throw but was called out. Instead of runners at the corners and one out...2 out and Heether flies out to end inning. No Lou again...not sure what is going on there. Investigation is needed for sure. Interesting lineup with Deevers in right and Truffles at DH with Vinny catching. Deevers error wasn't really an error at all. He was running into the gap in right center...the ball bounced in there as no play could have been made. Deevers saw this, went deep on it and played the bounce at full speed. Knocked the ball down which was a surprise as this was a hard hit gapper. Picked it up and threw it in. No error there in my eyes. Play of the night. Swing player hits one into right center gap to the wall....comes around second as Deevers picks it up...he guns it to Lewis who turns WHILE throwing and nails the runner at third. Next batter exact same thing only Heether couldn't handle the low throw. Will Lewis...who is this manchild? The guy looks amazing out there. He made a terrific play on a hot, hot, hot shot to second that sent him almost rolling and he still made the play at first. Joe Mauer bobblehead giveaway and draws a crowd of 4,221. The point was brought up about the nice stadium there and the one in Beloit and the conclusion was made that Beloit is for baseball while the other one is too commercialized. Turns it into an experience instead of a baseball game. I'm glad we have Pohlman and from talking to fans in line and at the game...those that have been to Beloit enjoy it very much. A very enjoyable road trip and I'd encourage all to go as it is a good time. They have two mascots, Clyde the orangatan, and Rookie the Racoon (holdover from River Bandits) and have a lot of stuff for the kids, on field games, activity zone in right. Beware of gift shop...dare I say more pricey than Miller Park?!?!? Oh and the seventh inning stretch...no chicken dance, or beer barrell polka, but get this.....the cha-cha shuffle or whatever it's called... It's not too often you go to a night game and end up at a biker rally. Next to the stadium they had a Sturgis on the Riverfront rally and we checked it out. Let's just say that was an experience.
  7. Truffles can't get extra base hits when Money has him bunting over 50% of the time. His "3rd" single was a liner straight up the middle. I'd like to see what he could do if he could get the green light....anything in the gap would be extra bases, he's that fast.
  8. A few thoughts from Beloit: Dana had it going on tonight. Was thowing low to mid 90's...he sawed off a lot of bats tonight. It was more than 3 though. Looks like Dana should be fresh for the Midwest League All-Star game on Tuesday. Scouts were out in full force tonight. I sat in the reserved section behind homeplate and counted 7 guns. 2 were from the Snappers/Lumberkings. Of the 5 scouts I saw...one was Milwaukee, one was the Mets, one was Colorado...I thought I saw the Tigers guy too. They were watching Dana pretty heavy, Heether seemed to get some looks as well. Bottom of the first Truffles bunt single, Lewis bunt single. What comes next for all you Money fans out there? That's right...double steal. Lewis slipped after a horrible jump and was picked off easily. Money is so easy to coach against it's not funny. I have never seen a manager bunt as much as he does. I know you have to create runs Don but for pete's sake if you bunt everytime, when you really need one they are expecting it. Drew Anderson had a 3 run job to right center. Nice to see him have a good night. Deevers made a fantastic catch in the right center gap to rob the hitter of extra bases. Laid out for it full extension. Mitch Stetter....his breaking pitch is filthy. Mitch took the 8th and 9th to lock it down. We had to laugh as the lefty hitters couldn't touch him...even Micah Furtado (who looks very good). This one hitter Mitch threw it right at him....the batter pulls back...the pitch snaps in there for a perfect strike. Amazing...oh and uh check out his era as well http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Grybash...can flat bring it. Problem, as with most minor leaguers, control. twice had bases loaded but only gave up one run on a deep, warning track to right center sac. Marks didn't have the best of nights defensively. Gave up a stolen base to second due to a huge jump, then next play they steal third and Marks fires a one hopper into left to give up the run on his error. Truffles is fast....came up to bunt (go figure)...after going down 0-2...works count a bit then....fires off a 2 strike bunt and makes it due to confusion between pitcher and first baseman as to who would take it. Great night tonight and great fireworks show. Throw in a sweep and it was a very enjoyable evening.
  9. I doubt that foamboy....he's not bonds ripped...the guy is just solid.
  10. Heether is really turning the corner in my eyes. He just needs to get some consistency. The guy is great defensively, built like a brick.yeah, and has decent speed. He's shown the pop but it seems like the day after a big game like Tuesday he goes O for the world because he's trying to pull the ball out of the park. Reminds me of Jenkins and his streaks. Heether's swing flies open, shoulder is wide open and he pulls his head out. If he just gains that consistency with his swing he could be special. Plus the guy is so friendly, if you get a chance go up and talk to him. Let's all officially welcome him as the Brewers top 3rd base prospect. He's earning it.
  11. Also forgot to mention....the stolen base by Furtado. Lou's attempt to throw him out at second went about 15 feet above Lewis at 2nd base and into center field. Not the best of nights for Lou behind the plate coupled with the 2nd inning error.
  12. Snappers win 8-6....Heether and Moss go yard... Not a whole lot that stands out. Lou P with an error in the second. Strike out then the throw to get him at first went past...2 base error. Scores on foul pop out in deep left. Will Lewis looks great out there. Had the winning hit in the 8th I believe. Two on and two out...double down the line in left scored Vinny and Heether. Lewis thrown out at third trying to advance on throw home....late jump...should have ran right away. My boy Stevie Moss with another nice night..dinger, walk Truffles got lucky tonight. He had a single. Two times tried to pick him off first. Truffles stealing....pick off made...had him in a run down....first baseman running him towards second...never threw it...Terry safe at second. Corporan nice night with a triple and double. He should see a bit more playing time from Manny. Not to mention his glove is a lot better than ManRam. Villanueva didn't have it tonight. Gave up a couple of dingers and a few walks. Vinny with another walk tonight....really churning them out now. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Field umpire with a couple horrible calls tonight...one was in the 7th I believe with Truffles on third, 2 outs and Anderson batting. Money-ball time...tries a bunt single and actually made it but called out. Another blown call at first earlier as well as I wanna say it was Truffles beat out an infield hit but was called out. Great night for baseball and a great crowd for all you can eat night 2. Look forward to Thursdays game as I can't make it tomorrow or wed.
  13. Well where to start...I was lucky enough to take a trip into the Lions den and visit Cedar Rapids on Sunday to see the 9-4 drubbing of the Kernels. First off, Veterans Memorial Stadium is absolutely gorgeous. Best minor league park not named Victory Field I've been too. Reminded me a lot of Victory field with concourse around top of seating so game is still visible if walking around. Weird dimensions with a wall that juts out a bit in the left field corner. Video scoreboard with clock AND mph. Top notch place to watch a game. I believe the game log/recap was errant as I am 98% certain the double error in the 1st was a botched pick off by Moreira and an errant throw by Lewis who had came over from 2nd to grab the past ball and a throw that would have nailed the runner who was only 2/3 of the way to third by the time the ball was to Heether who couldn't handle it. Moreira looked nice...velocity wasn't that high according to the stadium gun...only up to high 80's. Worked out of a couple of jams...once had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out after a sac bunt....two flyouts to end the threat. Vinny's shot in the 5th was a no doubter.....left center and a rough estimate of probably 390 ft. Grybash gave up the shot of the afternoon to the catcher Duenas who pulled his fastball to dead left. Trying to do some estimates of how far that ball went we came to a conclusion of 480- dare I say 500 ft. That hit was the furthest I have ever seen a ball hit in person. But when you throw as hard as Grybash...mid 90's you give up some dongs but man was that far. Even Prince last year never hit one like that. Also sucked as Dan had him at 2 strikes. The Capn's shot looked like a double until everyone realized it didn't bounce of the fence but cleared it by about a foot. Left center...he can pull them if he wants. The double play to end the game was great because it should never have occurred. Hit to the 2nd base side of Acosta at short......he ends up getting a glove on it and the ball sticks in there...one second...two...finally flips to Lewis who turns and hesitates...then makes a lazy lob that beats the runner by 2 steps. It was like watching McGwire run to first it was that slow. Mitch Stetter....man is he good. I've been pimping him for a little while now. A tall, smooth throwing lefty. Name to watch. Heether had a tough day. In the 5th inning he made the first out. Came up again...then made the 2nd out. Corporan saved him the chance of making the 3rd out in the same inning. Had a touch of the Jenkins....long swing, pulling head, shoulder flying open, a little spin in the box. A great afternoon for baseball in a great park and a great win. Best roadtrip so far...with more to come hopefully.
