  1. The Dodgers might have the best pitcher in the league and the best player in the league, yet they are nowhere near first place in their division. Gosh darn those two for not making the rest of their pitching staff and everyone else on the diamond better!
  2. Runs - 98 (4th) fWAR - 7.1 (tied, 2nd) AVG .318 (4th) OBP - .427 (1st) Hits -178 (6th) RBI - 98 (6th) OPS - .971 (2nd) SB - 8 (??) HR - 28 (12th) 2B - 37 (4th) BB - 106 (1st) My gosh does Votto scare me.
  3. Isn't that approach really just a proxy for what we really want to know? We want to know how valuable an average defensive performance is at one position vs. another. It's only because that question is so difficult to answer that we start looking at offense.I think UZR adjusts for defense well enough as it is, isn't that the entire point of UZR? As far as I know it is not adjusted positionally, but rather for the average run values of everything in a given zone (so a ball hit to the LF gap has a higher run value than a grounder to SS)The "positional bonus" used in a statistic like WAR is to give value to guys like Mike Cameron, who offer a league average bat at a prime defensive position, making his bat well above the league-positional-average.
  4. First part is incorrect. Here is a little guessing game. Guess which one is McGehee's out of zone swing percentage. Is it A.) 29.2% B.) 40.6% C.) 34.7% D.) 31.6% He maybe out of balance and his bat speed may have slowed down which would explain for the poor hitting by McGehee. It is correct, though. His O-swing% is 29.2%, but his Z-swing% is only 60.8% (career low). Only 46% of his pitches seen are in the zone (also a career low), so he is seeing more non-strikes and swinging at them at the same % as he has in his career -- hence, he's swung at way more balls this year than in previous seasons. Casey has completely lost the ability to hit for power, his ISO is lower than every player with 200 PA's on the team, except for Kotsay.
  5. Positional adjustments should really address defense though, which is why measures like that are generally not used. They should address the scarcity of a league average hitter at the position.
  6. There are 7 hitters in the lineup who are better than Kotsay. Yet he hits second. That is my major issue. My minor one is not starting Hart, who's OPS (without getting the platoon advantage all season, unlike Kotsay) is 200 points higher than Kotsays on the season.
  7. Don't worry, all the lefties are in the lineup today... except for Weeks, Braun.... and of course, YuniB! Gotta get Kotsay that start... and hit him 2nd!
  8. I have had 15 different people, who never attended a game with me this season (Despite me asking, on multiple occasions) ask me if I had an extra playoff ticket for them (and/or their friends). It astounds me, seriously.
  9. I'd think so. Almost for sure. Dearest Ron, you are committing two travesties every single game, I wish you could remedy at least one of them each night. Please start Green or JHJ. Yuni has a .492 OPS since Aug 15th. McGehee's is .675 over the same period. They are not "breaking out of it".
  10. Why does it seem like you are constantly trying to get people to berate Yuni? Leave him alone for 1 game.Yuni simply existing gets people to berate Yuni, regardless of how he does in the particular game. There's usually around 5-10 posts complaining about him before the game even starts, so I don't think it's all that unreasonable mentioning he played well when other people can't lay off him in a game where he actually does well. But you can say "Hey, Yuni had a good game tonight." without saying "My gosh, I can't believe anyone would find a way to complain about Yuni after tonight."
  11. I'd rather he say, "I'll worry about that in the off season. I'm worried about making and playing well in the playoffs right now" Seriously, don't these guys take a media relations class?
  12. Cam hit .240 with a .331 OBP once he got healthy in Florida. If he can still play CF, I could see him being a valuable 4th OF or RH part of a CF platoon.
  13. RRR loves his small samples, but YuniB vs Millwood: 53 .163 .208 .163 .371Yep. If Hairston can't get a shot tonight, he may never get one.
  14. in 53 PA against Millwood, YuniB: 53 .163 .208 .163 .371RRR loves his small sample sizes, if Hairston can't get a start tonight, he may never get one.
  15. Its nice to hear from DM, but he can't say anything controversial, or open up any doors or say anything bad about anyone on the roster. I wish they would ask him questions that pertain to his duties as GM (roster construction, picking a manager, relationship with the manager, etc) instead of softballing him with "Hey Doug, tell us what Casey McGehee does well this season since you won't say anything bad about him." He managed to say that Yuni isn't bad defensively. And That.
  16. I actually broke up with a girl because she couldn't go an hour and a half without texting/tweeting/facebooking when we would go out on a date. It is amazing that people do not consider that sort of behavior rude, but if I were on a date with the girl and I was watching the Brewers game while talking to her.... rudest. thing. ever.

  18. Are we sure this is true? I mean, I wouldn't want Carpenter to come across as a liar.
  19. I had a female friend who was like that with the Badgers, back when I lived in Madison. It got so bad that when we had get togethers for Badgers games, people would ask if she was going to be there, and wouldn't show up if she was.

  21. You should just post this: http://thoughtcatalog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/A-Flowchart-to-Help-You-Determine-if-Yoursquore-Having-a-Rational-Discussion.jpg
  22. Sigh. I totally derailed this thread. I apologize. Perhaps a mod can split the thread to get it back on topic. I just dislike everyone blaming Bud for everything, when there really isn't anything he can do to fix it, aside from missing another WS or two.
  23. You simply cannot blame Bud for this. He's done more for competitive balance with revenue sharing and the luxury tax than most would've thought possible 20 years ago. The Yankees pay upwards of 150M a year on revenue sharing and the luxury tax and there's no way the MLBPA would ever agree to a hard salary cap
