  1. It was nice to see this fangraphs article about the influence of spin on batted balls: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-lurking-influence-of-batted-ball-spin/ Changes to the baseball obviously have an influence on offense, but I'm afraid many pundits and fans are taking statcast data at face value and extrapolating to all sorts of conspiracy theories. MLB's opaqueness is a big problem, but I would argue the humidors are a step in the right direction in terms of controlling for differences between locations. Other factors will never be controlled for, which is part of what makes baseball fun.
  2. Didn't realize it was a day game -- wow, we got smoked today. I'll just pretend it was an off day.
  3. My dad suggested the same thing but the lack of liquidity scares me away. Recessions are like garage sales -- gotta be able to convert to cash to buy at a discount. Unfortunately it sounds like politicians have gone nuts, advocating for tax cuts and further stimulus during an inflation crisis. It's gonna get ugly.
  4. Sell it all. Cut your losses and get out now while you still can. The whole ship is going down.
  5. Rowdy is the Jeromy Burnitz reincarnation that I've been waiting my whole life for.
  6. One more to tie the Yankees for the league lead in home runs.
  7. It's way easier to hit a 6:40 now that I work from home. In fact, I would enjoy some 5:40 starts. It's pretty easy to see that 3/4 of the crowd is gone on weeknights if the game goes much past 10 PM. Even if it is a close game.
  8. Reds fans are cheering against them -- they want them to be so terrible that ownership has to sell. So there's no reason not to cheer for record futility (except Votto).
  9. Not only that, but we've played 2-4 less games than everyone else at the top of the leaderboard, except the Yankees who have also played 30 (we're at 30 + one inning now). Edit -- above is slightly wrong, 0-2 games behind others. Dodgers have played 2 less games than us as well.
  10. Should have spotted the Reds 5 or 6 runs to make this game interesting.
  11. Best offense in MLB?
  12. MLB should be embarrassed by this sad excuse for a baseball team.
  13. Strongly agree. MLB clearly has too much power over the baseball, changes should have to be approved through the same channels that approve other rule changes.
  14. I think the umpires are more to blame for the lack of offense than the new baseball. I like the new baseball. It's reducing opposite-field HR by non-power hitters which is a desirable result. I have no doubt that a robotic strike zone would increase offense. Hitters know what the strike zone is and they will lay off pitches outside of the zone if there is no risk of them being called a strike.
  15. Unless the ball also got smaller, it's hard to blame it on the ridiculously high strikeout rate.
  16. Oh man, Wong was dead meat if that is caught. That must have been a +50% WPA hit! Edit: + 42%
  17. This guy is throwing junk up there, make him pay!!!
  18. It boggles my mind that MLB is ok with the Pirates existing solely as a means to funnel TV revenue into their owner's pockets. Nobody would care if their attendance is zero for the entire season.
  19. It's nearly impossible to tell the difference between the current version of the cold and COVID that are both circulating right now. Both are pretty nasty and will knock you out for a couple of days. I agree that the combination w/ spring allergies isn't helping either.
  20. Wait, where did the Giants go? Why are we back on the road? Who wrote this schedule?
  21. 8-5 with both the pitching and the hitting getting off to slow starts. Counsell always seems to a way to tally up the wins.
