  1. I guess it depends on if you think we're getting post or pre all-star break Yelich. Or maybe some combination. His post break OBP is only .309. Now that he's not being pitched around his OBP is dropping accordingly. I don't think he's among the top 2 guys most likely to get on base at this point in the season. I disagree. You go with the full season or multi season sample. No doubt that Yelich is slumping right now, but when will he break out of his slump? Tomorrow? Next week? Never? Maybe he will never be a .430 OBP guy again, but if there's been one consistent characteristic of Yelich it's his OBP. Even going back to his Miami days. Even to the untrained eye it's clear that Yelich's problems are mostly related to his swing. Which honestly is one of the better problems to have (assuming the swing issues are not related to injury, which they might be). In theory it's correctable. Just two weeks ago he was scorching everything he saw, although his launch angle tends to be less-than-ideal.
  2. You don't move a .360 OBP hitter with plus speed+baserunning down in the lineup. He has the second-best OBP on the team. He should be in the #1 or #2 spot. Period. The game of baseball doesn't care about salary or WAR per $. You put your best OBP and speed guys at the top of the order.
  3. Lisa certainly has an impressive resume, I would be curious to know what the nature of any complaints would be.
  4. Not surprised that they lost a bit of edge after the weekend series plus having the division wrapped up.
  5. It feels like Cain is going to come up with a big hit or two in the postseason.
  6. 3TO baseball at its finest right there. 32 pitch scoreless inning without a ball in play.
  7. The Padres are sending off very strong 2008 Brewers vibes. What's Dale Sveum up to right now? Especially compared with Toronto, who has a similar group of young stars but is on the opposite trajectory right now. The Cards are better on paper than the Reds, so it isn't surprising to see them emerge as the likely 2nd place team in the NL Central. Overall the 'tiers' of teams are pretty clear at this point, the Giants/Dodgers/Brewers/Rays are in tier 1, the White Sox/Astros/Braves are in a second tier of teams that are comfortably in the playoffs, and there is a huge glut of mediocre teams fighting for 3 of the 4 wildcard spots. It makes things interesting for sure since it only takes a series or two of good baseball to move to the front of the pack.
  8. What will I remember about Braun? Prettiest swing but most annoying batting routine. The guy you wanted up to bat with the game on the line. He was the last of the prospects from the mid-00s resurgence and the one that put the Brewers over the top in terms of being a playoff contender. The grand slam in 2008. The MVP year. And then...one of the worst cases of self-sabotage that I've ever seen. The PED use itself was no surprise, everyone coming out of Miami in that era was doing it. I remember exactly where I was when I found out he tested positive, it was such a typical 'Brewers' moment of that era to have our first bit of real success tainted so quickly. By the time he owned up the damage was permanent, his celebrity friends permanently disappeared from games, and he was never quite the same player. But, to Braun's credit, he went back to work, never complained through the losing and rebuild, and by all accounts was a clubhouse leader and positive asset to the contending team in 2017 and the NLCS team in 2018. In 2019 he gave us one of the best regular-season moments in a while when he hit that 9th inning grand slam against the Cardinals. And finally, I give him credit for not trying to impede or be a distraction on the 2021 Brewers, he's focused on his family and he's cheering this team on like the rest of us. I hope he can continue to have a role in the franchise in the future and I would absolutely support retiring his number.
  9. Aaannnd the Braun saga comes to an end. Locking.
  10. Absolutely, I’m a huge fan of WAR, it’s the best overall measure of who the best pitcher is. And it accounts for most of the variables that we’re arguing about. And I agree on deGrom, he was going to run away with the award. A couple additional starts would have done it, but he got passed in WAR by Burnes and others.
  11. Why should IP matter? Production isn’t measured by IP. They give the Cy Young to relievers sometimes. The award should go to the best pitcher. That’s Burnes and it’s not even close.
  12. Where Corbin Burnes now ranks in baseball among qualified pitchers: fWAR: 1st (7.1) ERA: 1st (2.25) FIP: 1st (1.50) xERA: 1st (1.89) xFIP: 1st (2.30) SIERA: 1st (2.59) K-BB%: 1st (30.5) HR/9: 1st (0.30) Barrel rate: 1st (2.6) K%: 1st-t (35.4) This race should be over, but more likely the no-hitter moves him into a dead heat with Buehler.
  13. I would be upset if we were out of playoff contention but this is a once in a generation chance to win a World Series and it’s mid-September. Burnes’ arm is going to need to work in October.
  14. You normally don’t get a trophy for a perfect game but if Burnes finishes this it might win him the Cy Young.
  15. It's just better for baseball if the Padres and Blue Jays get into those wild card games. Give the young starts some postseason exposure. I'll laugh if the AL wild card game goes from Manfred's made-for-TV dream of Yankees/Red Sox to some combination of the Jays/A's/Mariners.
  16. I think recent Brewer teams that have a bunch of players who can play multiple positions has lessened that advantage....their roster seems like it's pretty deep with their bench, and they can play platoon advantage with the DH depending on the handedness of the pitcher rather than just run out their everyday DH like most AL teams do now. The DH is certainly nice for AL teams but it the big picture they are only OPSing 7 points higher than the NL this year since you basically always have to start one guy off the bench and there are only so many guys who can hit MLB pitching to go around. The Brewers are lucky to have two 1B options right now, but for most NL teams adding the DH would just mean more ABs for Pablo Reyes-type guys.
  17. The BF.net preseason prediction thread wasn't very popular this year but it did have one prediction for 97 wins -- nobody said 100. Hard to predict that the Brewers would suddenly correct a decade-long problem at shortstop with the Adames trade. viewtopic.php?f=63&t=40363&hilit=2021+predictions&start=20
  18. I was told by someone once upon a time that there is actually a "weather" line in WI that if you cross it going north the trees change pretty quickly from mostly deciduous (leaves fall off) to more evergreen (pine). And I think it's roughly Hwy 29. I could be wrong, but I think almost all of pre-European Wisconsin was covered in conifers and the line just represents how far the loggers got before they moved on to the more lucrative forests out west. From a climate perspective I don't think there is anything special about that area, it just gradually gets colder and snowier as you go north until you get into the area influenced by the Lake Superior snowbelt which is certainly unique. At least from a Milwaukee perspective, "up north" could be anywhere that involved a weekend getaway...I think we used it for a family member's lake house in Oconomowoc.
