  1. The evidence increasingly points to this being the correct answer. All MLB teams are profitable. Some MLB teams are immensely profitable. The Brewers have appreciated in value by $800 million since they were purchased by Attanasio. After they couldn't get public money for Maryvale they ate the $60 million cost like it was nothing. The post-2008 Brewers are small market in name only. Their attendance, TV viewership, merchandise sales, etc are all mid-tier or better in MLB. The payroll is starting to reflect that as well. We shouldn't pretend like we are some poor franchise that's struggling to get by. The Indians, Rockies, D-Backs, etc. can all spend $150 million and so can the Brewers.
  2. What does that have to do with anything? Maybe they should have learned how to play catcher.
  3. The counter argument is that MLB owners can afford to take the hit if it doesn't work out. If the goal is to win a World Series, these big FAs make your team better, especially at the front end of the deal. You are paying for the rest of his career production regardless of how many years it occurs in. Machado was the #1 target at the trade deadline and now suddenly nobody wants him? I could see it if Machado and Harper were 29, but they should be just coming into their prime. I don't necessarily agree with everything above, but I do think we will see pre-arbitration MLB players making considerably more money in a future CBA and possibly earlier free agency. The efforts to save money are too widespread given the simultaneous record revenues.
  4. I like this move, it fills a big hole for 2019. I don't think this says much about future moves, Stearns is an opportunist and he just pulled off what looks like yet another smart FA signing. I assume the extra revenue from the deep postseason run played a role in making this happen. The last couple moves have been for high OBP guys which is another big positive.
  5. Max guaranteed money has to be the highest priority. It's impossible to know what the market will be in a few years. It would take some sort of insane short offer like 3 years / 125 million for Harper to even remotely consider a shorter contract. There's no point in signing for 5-6 years when there are offers on the table in the $300 million range.
  6. We might be seeing the downfall of guaranteed contracts. Machado carries too much risk for a huge guaranteed contract. Harper deserves a massive paycheck though, if teams aren’t lining up for his services then there is a definite problem. Any team that wants to win in the next 5-7 years could benefit from Harper.
  7. On game days I think many of those options would be competition rather than complimentary to Miller Park. On non-game days they would be competing with other malls/entertainment areas that are designed for that sort of thing, which are far larger and superior. Especially with nobody actually living near the area. I can't think of an example in MLB of what is being proposed--a ballpark village built entirely from scratch? All of the ones I can think of were either downtown or built as augments to pre-existing entertainment areas.
  8. I've had a few of these--one was pretty good and another was terrible. It's a smart way to market what is essentially a sugar-free version of other common canned mixed drinks. It isn't sold as a low-cal drink but that's essentially what it is. LaCroix with alcohol.
  9. The high barrier for entry is part of the appeal of the HOF. It also plays to the other unique aspects of baseball such as the obsession with statistics and the mythical immortalization of legends. I also like that the voters are given minimal criteria--it allows the voting to evolve with the game. There isn't any right or wrong interpretation and it allows people to 'make their case' for a particular player. This year Edgar will join the group of guys who benefited from the statistical revolution. The rigid numbers 'milestone' rule has mostly gone away, except for 3,000 hits. I'm in the group that was originally a hard no to Bonds/Clemens but now support their candidacy. I've come to like Barry Bonds as a person, it's unfortunate that he didn't mesh well with the media during his playing career. They were both just so good that I don't know how you could have a HOF without them. I have trouble using the steroid criteria because there was no testing and we have no idea if guys like Thome and Thomas were using them also, we can only make educated guesses.
  10. Some of these proposals sound like a more sterile or corporate version of the bars/restaurants on Bluemound, It's not clear what the benefit to the Brewers would be and in some ways it might be more of a burden. 75% of the business has to be sustained independent of baseball and when there isn't a game going on the area is entirely car-dependent and surrounded by a sea of asphalt. Mayfair Mall already checks those boxes and isn't that far away. I think it would be market cannibalization to put a detached restaurant or bar on the Miller Park grounds. It's a bad idea from a business perspective. There's a reason why Friday's is attached to Miller Park and a ticket is required for entry. As others have noted, the addition of more open standing/socializing areas would be a better solution.
  11. The reaction of the mascot is perhaps the best part of the whole thing.
  12. It's way too controversial to be touched and nothing will ever happen. Probably borderline too controversial for this thread as well...
  13. If they could get average the time of game back to ~2:30 it would mitigate many of these problems. Hard to blame people for being bored with the current state of baseball.
  14. I have too many questions to speculate on what is possible. I wonder if any developers have approached the Brewers about the parking lots. It's not clear to me what is economically feasible or what is allowed by various permits/contracts the Brewers have. Do the Brewers want to reduce their parking capacity, especially the more valuable spots near the ballpark? Could they build a restaurant in the parking lots or could Friday's block that?
  15. Another thrilling CFP game today...at least with the 4-team format we can get rid of Notre Dame before the final.
  16. Since skipping the bowl is now commonplace so I would expect players to start bailing sooner. Leaving in October or early November after elimination from the playoff (2-3 losses) might be a smart move. Now that is a valid concern. I hope someone does it because we will probably have our 8-team playoff about 10 minutes after it happens.

  18. Neither of these teams are any good but Wisconsin has Jonathan Taylor and Miami doesn't.
  19. When there's a random guy in Florida making $1 million/year for doing nothing else besides running the Outback Bowl, you know there's a serious problem. Although the Cheez-It bowl was tremendously popular on social media for being such a terrible game. So they could probably just let the freshmen play and do fine with TV ratings.
  20. The slo-mo at 1:20 needs to become a recurring GIF on this forum.
  21. Weird how a crappy bowl gets a crappy start time. It makes you wonder why they even bother. I hope the players are having fun in NY at least.
  22. Who scheduled this game at 2 PM (Pacific) in the middle of the week? It’s not even a holiday or anything. I had actually considered watching it.
  23. This is really excellent info, thanks. I don't know if I trust those defensive WAR stats. Supposedly Broxton was +1.3 bWAR in 2018 and -0.5 bWAR in 2017. How many times did we beat the Cardinals last year because of their atrocious defense? I seem to recall it being a major factor in several close games.
