  1. I watched the Cubs jump all over Capuano and it's gotten to the point where I don't feel anything anymore about this collection of band aids and stopgaps. There's no magic button Yost can push, there's no single roster move that Melvin can make that will turn this around, they're just a bad team headed for another high draft pick. I hope Overbay is o.k. I hope Sheets, Davis and Adams finish the year strong. I hope Bill Hall eventually learns to take a walk. Quite frankly, I don't expect anyone else on the current roster to have any sort of role on the next good Brewers team. My emotional investment in this group is just about done, at least until next season. Robert
  2. Apropos of nothing, Bobby Abreu is really, really good. I agree completely. Maybe the most underrated great player in the sport. Either him or Barry Bonds when people suggest that there's actually competition for the MVP award. Robert
  3. I think Ned perhaps has a little too much faith in Dauer's defensive positioning. Bringing the infield in has its place, but it's when allowing a single run loses a game since it increases the odds of multiple runs scoring. Just a lousy way to lose a game with defensive lapses, a very good pitching performance sabotaged, and some questionable strategy at the end. At least the Cubs are losing. Robert
  4. I like that 11 starts for Penny vs. 45 games for Mota comparison. Sure, Mota will be "available" for all of the rest of the games, but he'll really only be able to pitch in about 20. I'm certainly not expecting Mota to appear in more than 75 games for the season. Just a silly comparison. BTW, now that the Dodgers are 4-1 since the trade and the Marlins 0-4, how long before columnists start backing away from their "Marlins are big winners/Dodgers big losers" stories. Robert
  5. Anyone else feel dumber listening to Schroeder babble about not knowing what the Mets are planning for third base in the future? Granted, I know he doesn't follow the minors, but the fact that the Mets traded their starting third baseman so they could play a 21 year old, high draft pick, who hit around .330 in the minors this year, should be a clue. Robert
  6. FWIW, I've got to give credit to Yost for going to Vizcaino. It didn't quite work out, but Yost saw that his pitcher was ineffective, took him out when the game was still in control, brought in the right pitcher for the circumstances (one who gets Ks), and at least limited the damage to a tie game. At that point, McClendon did what most managers do, brought in less than his best available pitcher, because the save was more important than the win. Robert
  7. 3 games under .500 with 4 games left to the All Star Break. My gut feeling, a win today followed by a heartbreaking loss tomorrow. That would be a good summary of the season. Robert
  8. I admit that I know next to nothing about heroin addiction, besides what I learned from Trainspotting, which was hardly a clinical study on the topic. I've no idea what his likelihood of recovery is. Still, I'd like to think that after a stint in rehab, he might be able to pick up his career as long as he's supported and stays with counseling. The odds of his career ever amounting to anything have certainly gotten much longer. Robert
  9. That was very nice of Callis to respond so promptly. I agree that an age based comparison is more useful as well. There are very few pitchers, from college or high school ranks, who are able to pitch in the majors successfully before age 23 or 24. The fact that High School pitchers take a few more years to reach the majors shouldn't be ignored. I'd rather not have a pitching injury, but if one was inevitable, I'd rather it be after I recovered some of the bonus value through major league performance. Cal Eldred's effective career probably wasn't too far past J. M. Gold's, but Eldred at least had value in the majors. Robert
  10. FWIW, here are the team splits (BA/OBP/SLG) by month. April .256/.336/.430 May .248/.316/.372 June .267/.343/.402 July .244/.312/.344 Overall .255/.327/.388 There's not much to say except the slugging is the big variable and April looks like the exception. This is basically a .250-ish BA team whose walk rate is fairly steady. OBP-BA by month, .080, .068, .076, .068. We knew that this team likely would have a problem with slugging going into the year and that's basically the team's major problem. Lyle Overbay is the only regular with a SLG greater than .435. For whatever reason, including tougher competition, the team's slugging has disappeared in July along with the remnants of the offense. Robert
  11. Right now the Brewers offense is so frustrating that it puts a pall over the whole experience of watching the team. They're better than they were last year due to the pitching, but it's pretty clear they have a lot of work left to do. I don't think the offense is quite this bad, but it's pretty clear that the offense is bad, primarly due to a lack of slugging. Remember the team that used to at least hit some doubles? BTW, the Brewers playoff chances are pretty close to zero now. The Brewers would have to go 43 and 25 the rest of the way for 90 wins, the usual playoff threshold. That calls for a .632 winning percentage the rest of the way. Maybe a couple of games less than that will do it this year, but I see no evidence that the Brewers are capable of playing much better than .500 ball the rest of the way. At least Doug Melvin's decision making process is easier. Who knows, if he acquires some young talent that can hit a little, the Brewers might even improve after selling off some veterans. There are so many interchangable middle infielders on this team, that it's hard to see the team getting a whole lot worse if the only pitcher they trade is Vizcaino. Robert
  12. Isn't technology wonderful? Robert
  13. You know, asking Callis via e-mail what the study would look like using age instead of years from being drafted, sounds like a good idea. Somebody should do that. Especially somebody that proposed the idea in the first place, so they can reap the credit. Robert
  14. The managers sure didn't manage any differently than they did in Milwaukee two years ago. If there had been a big comeback, they would have been in the same boat going into extra innings. Of course, it really would have been a near miraculous comeback, but McKeon sure didn't manage like it counted for much. Finally McCarver shuts up. Worse than Schroeder. Worse than Walton. Kolb and Sheets did a heck of a job. Sheets in particular really looked sharp and was efficient. Robert
  15. I hate Tim McCarver. Especially since he's basically ignoring the game and being a gossip columnist. Just awful. Robert
  16. Is it a good thing or a bad thing that Jimy Williams could be fired? I think bad. Robert
  17. Sure Bennett has made 5 outs in 4ABs but he has 2 RBIs! Which is a perfect example of why RBIs are an overrated statistic. Especially when their context isn't considered. Robert
  18. I think you can also make a case that, in addition to Suppan, Miguel Batista (3.98 ERA) and Kelvim Escobar (3.62 ERA) would have been meaningful pickups. I'd really like to get Obermueller out of the starting rotation, although if the Brewers call up Hendrickson soon, I don't think anyone will complain. Robert
  19. I think the Expos are ultimately going to finish ahead of the Diamondbacks and Rockies. While I wouldn't call it a test, this is a series that they should win because it's going to get a lot tougher in a hurry. They really need to hit some HRs in this series. Robert
  20. FYI, Brian's image was literally a tangent. At least the geometric equivalent. Robert
  21. Realistically, Counsell is a better fit for Boston since Reese backs up SS and Bellhorn is hitting at 2B. If the Red Sox wanted to trade Youkilis, I'd certainly be interested. Even if it's only to pack him off to Oakland in a later deal. Robert
  22. I was at the game today. There's not more that needs to be said other than Santana was in control all game and Victor Santos was poor. I give Yost credit for pulling the trigger on bringing in the bullpen early as that, along with Counsell's big hit, kept the Brewers in the game until the end. Robert
  23. I'm no draft expert. On the one hand, I trust Jack Z. OTOH, I really do feel they drafted too many high school pitchers. I guess we'll see where they stand in 4 or 5 years, but given the state of the organization, not to mention the risk involved, I would have preferred pitchers that could move faster through the farm system. I guess I trust that they didn't do anything stupid, but I get the feeling that we'll get a lot more of the same highs and lows of following Mike Jones with these draft picks. Robert
  24. What shocks me is not that they took a high school player, but that they took a high school pitcher. Maybe it's insider politics, but I wasn't expecting that. Robert
  25. It probably won't make a difference, but I'm sick of seeing Trent F. Durrington as the first bat off the bench in a game that's theoretically still in reach. That pretty much means that at the end of the game a better bat (aren't they all?) won't have gotten a chance to hit. Robert
