  1. This is exactly why I've been talking up Doug Davis's trade value. He's healthy, durable, and affordable. I am anxiously waiting to see what the Moustache can swing this offseason. Seconded. I've been saying for a while that Davis has more value than some seem to think.
  2. OPS+ is adjusted for park factors, I believe, and Beltre posted a 90 and 108 the last two years after his big 163 in '04. His career OPS+ is 106.
  3. I think Davis could net us more than Vazquez. Over the past three years, Davis has actually been the better pitcher ERA and FIP-wise, though Vazquez has a longer track record. I would probably value them pretty equally, but then Vazquez costs about twice the money, IIRC. Maybe give us Brian Anderson as well, or am I too much of a homer?
  4. Beltre should have little to no trade value right now, or at least similar to Jenkins. A Jenkins for Beltre and $9 million trade would make sense to me. He's had one amazing year out of 9 bad ones. (Though he was quite young for the first couple.)
  5. Having a duo like Berkman & Lee puts the Astros O in another category. It's so important to put together at least two stud big-time run producers. BoSux, Yanks, Cards, Mets, White Sox, and Jays (w/Thomas) all qualify, and all are serious 2007 playoff teams. I think Berkman, Lee, and Ensburg are all good hitters. But Berkman is the only one who could be put in the Ortiz, Ramirez, Rodriguez, Pujols, ect. category. Taveras brings incredible speed, and Biggio will surpass 3,000 hits this season. Just because Biggio had a great career doesn't mean he's good now. He had a .728 OPS last year and an 83 OPS+. And Taveras may have speed, but he's not on base very much to show it off. Add in his .340 SLG and is isn't an asset to a team either.
  6. Gonzalez, 28, is one of the game's top defensive shortstops, but his .179 batting average with runners in scoring position last season was the lowest in the majors. Yeah, those 117 AB's override anything else he's ever done. 2005 w/ RISP (115 AB) - .296 / .387 / .426 / .813 Career OPS - .684 Career OPS w/ RISP - .739
  7. Bump. I don't get it.
  8. Found it. Apparently it was Tim Kurkijan on ESPN radio who reported the Turnbow connection. I guess nobody here listens to ESPN radio anymore, and I don't blame them. Here is a post from a Orioles blog:
  9. What a very odd thing to 'report'. What's next, reporting about the other 700 Major League players that the Orioles haven't had discussions about? I'm assuming there was a small rumor about him that managed to escape us here at BF.net.
  10. I've heard of one report that had them talking to the Orioles about Lopez. That was the one specific report, but it was also reported that adding some arms and dealing Davis was the general plan.
  11. They both have poor stuff but Lopez can control his bad stuff better. K/9, 2004-2006 Doug Davis - 7.57 Rod Lopez - 5.66 BB/9, 2004-2006 Doug Davis - 3.89 Rod Lopez - 2.78 K/BB, 2004-2006 Doug Davis - 1.95 Rod Lopez - 2.04 I'll give you control, but Davis definately better stuff. Looking at the ratio, they actually seem pretty similar. The difference between the two has been HR/9, which is somewhat odd as Lopez actually holds a slight edge in GB/FB ratio. HR/9, 2004-2006 Doug Davis - 0.84 Rod Lopez - 1.28 With all that said, Davis has a considerable lead in FIP (expected ERA) over the last three years (~0.60).
  12. I think Doug Davis has more trade value that most here think he has. Melky Cabrera would not be a good enough return. Also, his minor league stats don't suggest he will be much better. (I know there are exceptions, i.e. Bill Hall)
  13. From Roch Kubatko's blog today, a reporter for the Baltimore Sun:
  14. I'm with Straw, Jennings had been consistently bad for a few years, and this year he was a little better but got lucky with his ERA. I'd take him over Lopez, but not over a guy like Cliff Lee.
  15. Denverpost.com is reporting that Roberts is seeking $15 million over three years. This sounds consistent with the predictions made by Rotoworld (16 million over 3 years) It also sounds "fair" relative to the other contracts numbers being thrown around. If there was anyway to make that third year an option year, it would make me feel better.
  16. He'd probably have to be packaged, or else we'd have to take on a real bad contract or a player coming off a down year. But I think if we were to try and make a deal for a quality batter, Davis would be a main piece.
  17. Incorporating some of the recent rumors, this is a direction I'd like the see the Brewers take. 1. Lose interest in Roberts and Pierre, or they elect to sign elsewhere. 2. Grab two arms for the rotation, enabling a Davis trade. + Kevin Mench for SP Rod Lopez (or similar) + Geoff Jenkins, Zack Jackson/Dana Eveland, $3 million for SP Jake Westbrook (or similar) 3. Shop Davis around for the best OF we can get. + Doug Davis for CF Ryan Church (or similar - I picked a player less mentioned) 4. Round of the offseason by adding a decent vet LHRP. + Sign RP Aaron Fultz (or similar) STARTERS BENCH/BULLPEN ON THE FARM -------------- -------------- -------------- 2B R.Weeks C M.Rivera C J.Closser SS J.Hardy IF J.Cirillo 3B R.Braun 1B P.Fielder IF V.Rottino SS Y.Perez LF B.Hall OF G.Gross OF T.Gwynn CF R.Church OF B.Clark OF L.Nix RF C.Hart 3B C.Koskie C D.Miller SP B.Sheets CL F.Cordero SP C.Villanueva SP C.Capuano RP D.Turnbow SP Y.Gallardo SP D.Bush RP J.Capellan SP Z.Jackson/D.Eveland SP J.Westbrook RP M.Wise SP M.Parra SP R.Lopez RP B.Shouse SP T.Dillard RP D.Sarfate RP A.Fultz (Thanks to Brewerfan82 for the format.) EDIT: Other SP targets: Kelvim Escobar, Javier Vasquez, Kris Benson, Carlos Silva
  18. I would much prefer Westbrook to Lee. I think it would be a great aquisition as well. The rumor out there is that Melvin wants to grab some arms and then deal Davis. Adding Lopez and Westbrook for Mench, Jenkins and a prospect (or similar type deal), would allow us to easily deal Davis. And I think this Davis deal will be our best chance to add a stud hitter. (Hopefully something will materialize before Melvin inks Roberts)
  19. though the deal was never close to being completed. Good. Especially if he'd hate to be in the pen.
  20. Interesting. I wonder what type of return we could be looking at for Davis. He would likely be a main piece of any trade that would bring in our stud bat we covet. I'd also like to aquire another starter other than Lopez if we do trade Davis. Another upside guy preferrably, like a Brad Hennessey or a Vazquez if we dump Jenkins and can take on salary. Sheets Capuano Bush Two of: (Vazquez, Hennessey, ect.) Villanueva Lopez Eveland Jackson
  21. While I wouldn't mind Pena, don't count on his average staying that high. He was very lucky last year with a .411 BABIP. He also was on pace for around 200 K's if he played a whole season. Not that I personally care, but I believe that's one of Melvin's areas he wants to improve upon.
  22. I'm hearing $80 over 6 from LAA per Rotoworld.
  23. I suspect that Roberts can likely be traded, assuming he even signs, before his contract ends. There's aways a team looking for a "proven leadoff hitter" in the offseason or at the deadline. The only reason we would want to trade him would be because he is no longer playing well, which would crush his trade value.
  24. Schmidt- 14 mil SEA Zito- 16 mil NYY Lilly- 9 mil SF Mulder- 9 mil BAL Molina- 6 mil PHI Roberts- 5 mil MIL Soriano- 20 mil LAA Pierre- 7 mil LAD Nomar- 10 mil BAL Lugo- 8 mil TOR Drew- 14 mil TEX Huff- 8 mil BOS Suppan- 11 mil BOS Meche- 12 mil TOR C. Lee- 16 mil HOU EDIT: Because I'm more competitive than funny.
  25. He will probably have more trade value than he should, because of his last name. That will be a plus. I think he'd be best used in a package with Jenkins, Mench, Davis, ect. to net a better player than the first guy would alone.
