  1. Wow he sucks at regular hitting. If Escobar can be Willy Taveras though, he'd be passable with his defense. If he develops more gap power than Willy, he could be great.
  2. Even if Escobar was successful in 40% of his bunt attempts, he'd hit .400 / .400 / .400 with an .800 OPS in those attempts. At 80% successful, that's a 1.600 OPS. He won't be 80% successful in the bigs, but if he can grab 15 hits a season on bunts, that can add up and really help his numbers. Just say he's like Willy Taveras and can reach on 50%. Taveras attempts close to 60 bunts a season. Let's give Escobar a more modest 30 attempts. That's a .500 BA in a situation he'd otherwise hit, say, .280. That's roughly 11 extra hits in 500 ABs, and would bump his average from .280 to .302.
  3. Holy cow, digging through the minor league splits on Escobar - he was 12 for 13 on bunt hits last year. That's insane. 13 bunts, he reached first 12 times. For his career - 32 for 40. I had no idea he was such an amazing bunter.
  4. I like that idea, though I'm still skeptical the Padres would want Hardy over say Escobar. And I highly highly doubt Peavey moves without getting at least one pitcher in return. I'm guessing it would take more like Hart / Escobar / Jeffress for Peavy / Giles.
  5. Why trade Hart for another Hart? Not sure I understand the direction this thread took.
  6. Why do you assume the position change had anything to do with his results at the plate? If any effect at all, I would think changing his position would be more likely to hinder batting development. I'm fine with the opinion that he could be an above average defensive center fielder instead of a below average defensive second baseman, but I wouldn't drag offense into the conversation.
  7. I would have much rather had the Brewers announce who they've hired and let us all know from that that Sveum was not their man, rather than kind of single him out as someone who is not fit for the position before they've even picked a manager. The whole point is that its fairer to Sveum letting him know as soon as they can, so he's not in limbo and can immediately begin searching for a new job. The Brewers could have handled this much worse by dragging this out beyond the completion of the World Series.
  8. See, I thought it was a very good episode. One of the least Jim/Pam focused episodes too. Angela's antics with the baby were hilarious, Dwight was pretty funny, Michael's treatment of Holly while Jan was there, and Jan's treatment of Holly at her jokes... Question: Where was Ryan in this episode?
  9. Yeah, I don't see us parting with a Parra+Jeffress+Cain package for him, which would cover the Padre's targets of two young starters and a center fielder according to the article.
  10. I'm going to be applying shortly for an internship with the Madison Mallards, Green Bay Bullfrogs, and probably the Timber Rattlers next summer. Does anyone here have any experience with these clubs that could cue me in on what its like, what to expect, or give me some advice?
  11. Its just not a sustainable number. That's a decent round at the home run derby. It may not come down to league average, but I'll put $100 down that it'll be lower next year in the same amount of innings or more.
  12. I would be so stoked if we pull off a trade for Peavey, pretty much regardless of the price. He's a league ace calibur pitcher getting paid $8, $15, $16, $17, $22 over the next 5 seasons. I mean, c'mon.
  13. Jeez, we might be able to get Cain and Sanchez for Fielder if that's his price. Of course, he could be asking for more than just Konerko too.
  14. Might as well just get OOTP. Way more customizable, and almost surely more in-depth with more accurate statistical models.
  15. So you think we should target Dimitri Young, but you have concerns with Nick Johnson because of his durability?
  16. The Nats have already said they're looking to bring in a new 1B - I say we target Nick Johnson.
  17. 1. Jeff Suppan Of course its highly unlikely he's replaced, but the farther down we can push him in the rotation the better. If he debuts next season as #3, we are in rough shape. If he goes 5th, his performance would be acceptable, ignoring the salary. 2. Third Base Somewhere, somehow, we need to find a capable stopgap. Both Gamel and Escobar should be in AAA for a season, so we need another season out of Hardy at SS. Once Gamel's final position is determined, it should set off a chain reaction for 2010 - Gamel to 3B, Hardy traded; Gamel to RF, Hardy to 3B, Hart traded or to CF; Gamel to 1B, Hardy to 3B, Fielder traded. (Escobar at SS in all scenarios.) I'm fine with any of those situations, provided we get good value, but we need a bridge at 3B to keep us competitive in 2009.
  18. How do you tell someone you care about deeply..."I told you so?"
  19. I wouldn't pay much. He only had a 1.63 K/BB ratio, FIP of 4.79. He could improve, but he's like a Suppan, IMO.
  20. If someone actually gives him money, I'll be appalled. Why would anyone care about the tattoo on this guy's leg?
  21. Look at Coffey's HR/FB rate: 2005, 58 IP - 8.8% 2006, 68 IP - 10.4% 2007, 51 IP - 26.1% 2008, 26.2 IP - 20.0% That has to go down, regressing to the mean. Coffey will be a good guy to keep around, possibly performing better than Riske. Is the rumored contract $4 million total, or per year? The former I'm okay with, I would be surprised if it would take the latter for him to ink.
  22. Why do you type lst with a lowercase L rather than 1st with a 1? And Hate those Rodents is posting from two years ago, wow.
  23. I'm no odds expert, but these are odds, as in a horse race, not a % chance. 4:1 = 20% 5:2 = 2/7ths ect.
  24. Vazquez has never achieved anything near his ability. Recently, that is. Since leaving the Expos. Vazquez is basically a right handed Capuano who has struggled recently with runners aboard. Lowish LOB% over the last 4 years.
