  1. I don't have time to read that whole article, but I don't understand the negative in releasing that data? What so bad about the possibility of innovations from the public tinkering with data?
  2. The Plush Pose? http://s3.amazonaws.com/twitpic/photos/large/276958068.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJF3XCCKACR3QDMOA&Expires=1302823137&Signature=El23aiX2bTKKXKaVj4Yz4sjopKM%3D
  3. New front-runner: Sony Vaio S 13.3" VAIO Display with LED backlight (1366 x 768) Intel® Core™ i7-2620M processor (2.70GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.40GHz AMD Radeon™ HD 6630M (1GB VRAM) 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3-SDRAM-1333 Cons: I'd have to go over my budget by close to $300. Also, while that graphics card will probably be fine for today, I don't think it will hold up well a year or two down the road. (Side note... apologies for airing a "first world" problem. Sorry to annoy anyone if I did.)
  4. Those are customized specs on an HP Envy.
  5. Or am I being silly and this will work plenty good: Intel® Core i7-740QM Quad Core processor (1.73GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.93 GHz 1GB DDR3 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics [HDMI] - For Quad Core Processors 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
  6. Thanks guys. For my price range I would say about $1,200 or so, and preferably below a grand, but I'd rather buy what I actually want than something I settle for to save a few bucks. What's frustrating is it seems like some new machines are going to be coming out, but I can't find good information on them. For example, Dell pulled it's 14" XPS a few months ago and is supposedly replacing it with something better, but that's all I can find. Dell's Alienware might be coming out with a 14" laptop as well at the same time they refresh the M11x. I loved the HP Envy back in September when I was going to buy a machine back then, but it seems like it's now the "wrong" time to buy it. Everything I can find today has GPU's in the "mid-range" of the following chart, a.k.a. next's month's "low-range". The good news is I can wait all the way until the end of the summer before purchasing, so I'll probably just monitor the market until something perfect is released. Comparison of Laptop Graphics Cards
  7. I want a 14" or smaller laptop. That's non-negotiable. Second requirement, I want it to run games like Civ V and COD more than capably, and export video to my 24" desktop monitor. I realize those two requirements aren't very compatible. I'll just have to do the best I can do. I was looking at the HP Envy 14 and the Alienware M11x. But my "problem" here is that both these computers have been around for over 9 months I believe, at least. So my question is, does anyone know of anything else on the market (or soon to be released) that would be comparable or better than these two computers?
  8. It will just make me so happy to have the upper hand on OSU in a sport for a change.
  9. Second ESPN Radio appearance, I'd say better than the first: http://www.espnmadison.com/audiovault/espn_madison.php# That was this morning. We did the broadcast live from the Madison Golf Show at the Hitter's Sportsplex in Middleton. EDIT: One slip up was I had meant Greinke will be the 8th, 9th, 10th starting pitcher off the board, not overall.
  10. I gave myself a haircut for the first time in my life. Apart from taking about twice as long as it takes a professional barber, it actually turned out really well, especially for my first try. I'm talking long on the top with tapered sides and stuff, not just a straight buzz. Put that down on the list for something I should have started doing a long time ago.
  11. And it was John Smoltz who burned his chest while ironing a shirt that he was wearing.
  12. Thanks, its nice to hear that back... gotta cut down on the "ums"!
  13. Also left-handed. And to quantify his stuff, guess how many left-handed pitchers with over 100 IP had more K/9 than Parra last year... two. He had 9.79 K/9 as a reliever last year.
  14. And many current Brewers have posted better OPS over a full season in the majors vs their minor league stats. He's above .650 over the past two seasons and at the highest levels. But minor league stats aren't a great predictor of major league success anyway. I was just trying to frame up the expectations of what a good hitting catcher is and what a poor hitting catcher is.
  15. Starting catcher OPS in Milwaukee: 2004 - .568 (Moeller) 2005 - .753 (Miller) 2006 - .711 (Miller) 2007 - .699 (Estrada) 2008 - .658 (Kendall) 2009 - .636 (Kendall) 2010 - .628 (Lucroy) Now, because we've had crappy hitting catchers in the past doesn't mean we should accept one in the future, but a mid-.600's OPS isn't ungodly awful when comparing it to our recent past, especially when Maldonado may provide the best defense of the bunch. In a perfect world, Lucroy OPS's .750 with good defense and Maldonado backs him up with a .650 OPS and even better defense. And that's much more than we can say of our catching corps in a long time.
  16. Just finished an on-air radio interview with 540 ESPN Milwaukee as the fantasy expert representing RotoWire.com, talking starting pitching. My first booked gig on AM/FM, but I've been on XM before. Anyone hear me?
  17. Axford is letting people vote for his intro song on his Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/JohnAxford Interesting list of options... 1. Audioslave - Cochise http://bit.ly/9OlRaN 2. 18. Breakout - Chris Dickerson By mid-season, he will be our everyday leadoff hitter. Breakdown - Corey Hart His OBP in good years borders weak, and if he slips at all, it will be ugly.
  19. Hamilton was arby eligible for the two seasons of this contract. Weeks is a free agent. So it doesn't quite compare.
  20. Oh, I mainly just threw out the 0-for-25 as anecdotal evidence. I added "terrible over the last four seasons" so show I'm obviously looking at a slightly larger sample than that. In the last four years against LHP, a sample of 227 at-bats, he's hit just .194 with 12 walks. Still not the largest sample, but, well, there it is.
  21. I am not really disagreeing, only saying that in evaluating PH'ers the sample size is always going to be small. Everything doesn't have to be used to create a prediction but a GM has to use the information available. Sorry, but that's bunk. Just because X is the only piece of evidence, does not mean it's good evidence.
  22. I finally got around to look at his stat line, and frankly I was expecting it to be worse given the reaction. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a bad signing. Kotsay is basically Craig Counsell without the defense, and looks to possibly get some time at first base instead of shortstop. You could find a better first base backup with your eyes closed. But he's not non-existent. Counsell himself was actually worse at ages 32-33 than Kotsay, and he recovered enough to still be playing. Just don't let Kotsay hit against LHP (0-for-25 last year and terrible over the last four seasons). It is not out of the question for Kotsay to put up a .275 / .330 / .400 / .730 batting line. We have had worse bench bats than that in the last few years. Again, bad signing, but I'm not actually jumping off a bridge over this one. EDIT: This indicates to me that Gamel might not be trusted to even play first base at this point, if the selling point on Kotsay is that he can handle that position as a backup. I hope they move Gamel to the outfield in Triple-A right away, because I'm starting to think the infield ship has sailed.
  23. Can someone tell me why teams and/or players are never willing to do something like the following? Offer Rickie a base salary of $40 million over five years, for an AAV of $8. For every 30 games Weeks plays, he earns an additional $1 million. If he were to average 150 games per season over the life of the deal, he would earn $65 million over the five years. And ta-da! Weeks has security, and we aren't on the hook for a huge market deal unless he's actually worth it. Weeks could earn more money in total than Dan Uggla ($62 over 5 years) who his side seems to think is a comparable player. Crisis solved.
  24. Looks like Rickie's hitting free agency. He set the start of spring training as an extension deadline. I highly doubt we get anything done by then, considering how far apart the two sides are. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/114899254.html
