  1. i've also speculated that a player called up not to report wouldn't be drawing a major league salary for those few days, which per this, is more than $2600 a day. great opportunity for the position player to make some quick cash over a few days' time, but to the disappointment of the starting pitcher waiting in the wings.
  2. Increased amount of time going over video with the MLB team pitching coach. Throwing bullpens under the watchful eye of the pitching coach & bullpen coach. Time to get acclimated can't they achieve that by calling up the player not to report? he can work out with the team pre-game and post-game, can't he?
  3. if they're holding him until saturday, what's the harm in calling up a position player instead of thornburg? the team would get three games with a six-man bench, send him back before saturday's game, and recall thornburg. granted, that position player couldn't be recalled again for 10 days (unless another position player went on the disabled list), but is that a huge concern? i've never understood why a team calls up a starting pitcher only to have him sit for one to four games waiting to play.
  4. that's a question best answered by the parking lot attendants.
  5. regarding vesting weeks' option . . . you also have to consider that with john axford removed from the closer's role, there are fewer blown saves, and thus, fewer extra inning games. that helps minimize weeks' plate appearances.
  6. nelson is not on the 40-man. depending on how you look at it, three-fifths or four-fifths of the brewers' anticipated rotation at the beginning of spring training is on the disabled list right now (burgos, estrada, narveson, rogers).
  7. then name two players that you want to risk losing from the organization. has to be two, because one spot is reserved for corey hart when he's added back to the 40-man, and the other for hunter morris himself. and, if you're playing gm and anticipate trading a 40-man roster veteran player for salary relief, one would hope that it'd be for 40-man roster talent that could help the club this year--not minor league talent not on the 40-man. one greinke got the brewers three 40-man roster players. they had to make room for those three right away. still think hunter morris is a wise move at this point?
  8. also, bear in mind that the brewers had been playing with a four-man bench for quite some time. of lefties blake lalli, caleb gindl, scooter gennett, and righties khris davis and josh prince (the only available position players on the full 40-man roster), who would you bring up?
  9. and a spot on the 40-man roster . . . which is currently full, and excludes corey hart.
  10. for the record, nobody here predicted that the brewers would have two players named francisco on the roster. at least the francisco talent is better than the mouton talent.
  11. with francisco taking gonzalez' 40-man roster spot, the next victim in line (in terms of space on the 40-man) seems cemented in blake lalli. i still expect the brewers to outright lalli when hart returns, and option gennett back to nashville (sorry, scooter). this is why the timing of the brewers' move makes sense . . . why else would they be carrying two second basemen, plus two other guys who can play second long term? they have to be eyeing hart's near return in calling up gennett.
  12. good to see the brewers now back to a five player bench, and one with more left-handed bats. the bench now likely consists of: bianchi, maldonado, schafer, a first baseman named betancourt or francisco and a second baseman named weeks or gennett.
  13. i'm trying to recall the circumstances as to why miguel de los santos was placed on the restricted list. was it because of visa issues and not being able to enter this country and pitch? last we knew, he was out until at least july with the shoulder issue. assuming he's ready to pitch by then one would assume that the brewers can't keep him on the restricted list for much longer . . .
  14. which on most days, includes the starting pitcher.
  15. bear in mind that the brewers are playing with a four-man bench in bianchi, schafer, gonzalez and maldonado, and that the brewers will need to create a 40-man spot when corey hart returns, and at some point, the brewers hopefully will return to a 12-man pitching staff. schafer and maldonado aren't going anywhere provided they stay healthy. one would think that bianchi has proven that when given the opportunity to play, he can perform (plus he provides a spot start for the struggling weeks or the recovering ramirez). when hart returns, the brewers have to be thinking of cutting or trading gonzalez or betancourt, right? that would put hart back on the 40-man. then the brewers could look for a fifth bench player (either recall lalli or outright him to acquire a veteran outside the organization). i just can't envision the brewers proceeding with a bench that includes both gonzalez and betancourt once hart returns.
  16. my prediction: the brewers will outright blake lalli to the minor leagues to open up a 40-man roster spot for hart. no other team will claim lalli, and even though he has the right to elect free agency (it'd be his second time outrighted off a major league roster), lalli will elect to remain with the nashville sounds. before last week, i thought that mark rogers was the leading candidate to either be released or transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for hart. seeing as that happened to accommodate donovan hand, i initially contemplated alfredo figaro being next in line to be outrighted. i've now realized that the brewers really, really, really need figaro. if the brewers make a surprise move, it'll be outrighting the struggling caleb gindl. if he goes unclaimed, he has to accept the minor league assignment, as he's never been outrighted before.
  17. if i understand it correctly, only players previously optioned to the minor leagues can be recalled, correct? hand had his contract purchased . . . not recalled. i know the terminology can be confusing, so i'd appreciate clarification.
  18. if i understand it correctly, only players previously optioned to the minor leagues can be recalled, correct? hand had his contract purchased . . . not recalled. i know the terminology can be confusing, so i'd appreciate clarification.
  19. alfredo figaro appears to have a spot start in burgos' absence, so the bullpen is back to seven men for the time being.
  20. looks like hiram burgos is the victim with gorzelanny's return. the brewers still remain with a thirteen-man pitching staff, but a starting rotation in flux.
  21. and that's why they become hits. and he's not getting too many infield hits anymore, either.
  22. because if you get out and the next two batters do as well, alfredo figaro stays in the game to start the third inning.
  23. before the brewers learned that kyle lohse would be missing his saturday start and having mike fiers replace him, the brewers were anticipating that tom gorzelanny would be eligible to come off the disabled list by friday. the bullpen is currently at 8 pitchers. one wonders if the brewers will wait to activate gorzelanny until after fiers makes his start saturday, and send fiers down, or if figaro or kintzler will be optioned by friday to make room for gorzelanny.
  24. any word on rogers since he was pulled over two weeks ago?
  25. i'd love to see the brewers treat bianchi like they treated mark loretta early in his career . . . find a position for him to play and watch him hit, hit, hit. weeks is slumping. aramis ramirez isn't 100%. we need help at first base, especially with blake lalli gone and both catchers struggling (albeit bianchi is unproven at first). just like there was with mark loretta in the late '90s, there are opportunities for jeff bianchi to start games.
