  1. if replacement players for injured players in the post-season must be on the 40-man roster as of 31 august, it's not fair to the brewers if the mets wait until after 31 august to select the players to be named and one or both of those players hold 40-man roster spots. let's look at the catcher position and let's assume (for sake of discussion only) that both lucroy and kottaras are lost to injury in game one of the division series. martin maldonado is the only other catcher on the 40-man roster, but mike rivera is still part of the brewers' organization. the brewers should be able to pull both of them and play both of them in the division series.
  2. francisco rodriguez was not on the 40-man roster for the anaheim angels as of 1 september 2002: 9/15/02 transaction his contract was selected, meaning he was added to the 40-man roster on 9/15/02. i believe that a club can draw from any player within the organization if replacing an injured player, provided they first add that player to the 40-man roster (if he isn't on there already).
  3. it allows a position player with major league experience such as mat gamel to be eligible for post-season play.
  4. there have been reports elsewhere that tim dillard has to stay down for 10 days. not sure if they've been validated.
  5. 11:59 pm. conceivably, they could make the roster moves post-game tomorrow. however, if a player is optioned to the minor leagues, he has to stay there for 10 days, unless coming back to replace an injured player.
  6. so . . . the brewers are 40 hours or so from having their 25-man roster set for player eligible for the playoffs, and i can't figure out why they're carrying a 12-man pitching staff. nearly everyone has concluded that they can get by in the post-season with an 11-man staff, which would allow them an extra position player to choose from. the only thing i can can consider is that the brewers want flexibility if they advance to the next round, but said achievement happens with a pitcher that performs horribly (without being injured), and they want to remove that pitcher from the subsequent round of playoffs and have another pitcher take his place. if they go to an 11-man staff in the next 40 hours, the brewers don't have to worry about being short-handed in the pitching department, because they can call up any healthy pitcher on their 40-man roster not named tim dillard the very next day and have them ready to pitch on 1 september. if you were doug melvin, what would you do?
  7. maybe prince wanted to motivate the team re: playoff and world series shares.
  8. i'm expecting that the brewers, in the interest of having more players eligible for post-season play, will not activate carlos gomez until game three of the series (1 september). having said that, it's imperative for the brewers to win game one, lest management feel pressured that gomez is a must-have for game two. i'm also expecting the brewers to cut a pitcher and bring up a position player not on the disabled list by the end of game two.
  9. it matters if they come back, but it doesn't really matter when they come back. both gomez and weeks are eligible for post-season play regardless of their roster status as of 31 august. the brewers would be foolish to activate either player prior to 1 september.
  10. i'm hoping the brewers wait until 1 september to activate carlos gomez. he can be available for the four games in september against the cardinals. it's a convenience for the brewers to keep him stashed on the dl past 31 august (but still eligible for the postseason). assuming that the current brewers' starters have all gone deep during the last days of august (with no postponed games), i'd call for optioning marco estrada on 31 august and recalling mat gamel (keeping taylor green on the 25-man on 31 august).
  11. a spot was opened up when felipe lopez was outrighted to the minor leagues. the roster is back to 40.
  12. before august 31st passes, somebody needs to retitle this thread, "why do we still have 12 pitchers?" i'd much rather that the brewers have a 11-man pitching staff in the postseason and an extra position player available off the bench.
  13. ok . . . just learned that braddock will not pitch again in 2011. estrada or a waiver-deadline acquisition takes his place.
  14. i'm concerned about the current status of zach braddock . . . can anyone update me, please?
  15. outfield: braun, hart, morgan, gomez, kotsay infield: fielder, weeks, betancourt, mcgehee, hairston, counsell, gamel catcher: lucroy, kottaras starting pitching: greinke, gallardo, wolf, marcum bullpen: axford, rodriguez, saito, hawkins, loe, braddock, narveson
  16. So if say Green is called up September 1st and hit great off the bench, he couldn't be added to the playoff roster because he was added after August 31st? The only exception to that rule is if say McGehee got hurt middle of September and put on the DL, thus Green could replace Casey on the playoff roster even though he was called up in September? Sorry for asking, i just never paid attention to these rules. correct.
  17. reporters covering the brewers have stated that the brewers seem confident that they'll be able to appeal for one more option year for cody scarpetta. in a way, i am glad that the sounds are likely not playoff-bound. their season ends 5 september, and we can raid their roster then.
  18. the 40-man is at 39. i think this bodes well for green.
  19. Game 7 of the World Series? I think you meant Game 4 seven games means additional revenue for the brewers to re-sign prince fielder.
  20. can mark rogers be put on the 60-day disabled list in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster? or do the brewers have to recall him from the minor leagues first and then put him on the major league disabled list?
  21. the roster is now full at 40, so if we were in september, the likes of taylor green wouldn't be called up without releasing or outrighting another player (or transferring to/placing on the 60-day disabled list). brandon kintzler might be a candidate to be transferred to the 60-day disabled list to open up a spot. one would hope that neither carlos gomez or rickie weeks would be transferred to the 60-day disabled list . . . we need them in september and beyond. i could live with removing tim dillard from the roster. might even gamble on trying to outright mark rogers. risking losing one of our few available bullpen lefties (daniel ray herrera) might not be smart . . . but if zach braddock returns to form, then i'd be okay with outrighting herrera.
