  1. paternity leave forthcoming? i assume he'll be replaced by another pitcher . . .
  2. almonte accepted the aaa assignment. not surprised seeing as he was in nashville last year and was comfortable with the staff.
  3. i still remain convinced that the brewers brass told boggs that they'd like to treat him like a player they can option back and forth. boggs has to feel good knowing that there are currently two spots open on the 40-man roster, and he has to feel even better now that jeremy reed is out of the organization. that leaves him and brett carroll as the likely candidates to have their contracts purchased if an outfielder goes down . . . and boggs would seem to have the edge over carroll. finally, boggs knows that the brewers have two centerfielders that are aggressive (although gomez is only aggressive on the defensive side). with aggressive plays come the risk of injuries. of course, boggs would prefer being on the 40-man roster and being on the 25-man roster . . . but this is the best position he can be in with this organization.
  4. glad to see that mike rivera accepted his assignment to nashville.
  5. boggs and rivera should both take into account the two currently open spots on the 40-man roster and accept their assignments. it's quite possible either of their contracts could be purchased again by the brewers--especially boggs given his versatility.
  6. in addition to salary negotiation, i'm wondering if the player can work an opt-out into his contract. if he is able to get a new contract with the same organization, it's an obvious yes.
  7. bump. can brandon boggs negotiate a new contract with the brewers?
  8. boggs and doug melvin could have a gentlemen's agreement for this season. boggs knows that if he had a minor league option remaining, he'd be the first player recalled if an outfielder went on the disabled list. but he's not on the 40-man roster . . . but neither is any other outfielder (that can play all three spots). maybe melvin told boggs that they'd like to treat him like a player on the 40-man roster. the brewers could have brought jeremy reed back or purchased brett carroll's contract . . . or given a minor league prospect his first shot in the bigs. but they chose boggs . . . both times . . . and i don't doubt that he'll be called ahead of reed, carroll, gindl or schafer if an outfielder goes down again (especially considering that at the present moment, not all of the aforementioned players are healthy).
  9. the upside is the bench just got deeper because we're back to a 12-man pitching staff.
  10. the 40-man roster is full with this move. a spot could be opened up if manny parra or takashi saito is transferred to the 60-day disabled list, or if any of these possible candidates are removed from the 25-man roster: erick almonte (once activated from the disabled list), brandon boggs or mark kotsay. tim dillard can be optioned back to the minor leagues.
  11. why not boggs? if he declines the minor league assignment, he becomes a free agent. is there anything that prevents him from signing with the brewers? boggs has to be aware of the situation the brewers are facing. mat gamel's not ready to play right field on a regular basis. logan schafer isn't healthy. there are no other outfielders on the 40-man roster. he's a switch hitter that impressed the club in spring training. essentially, the brewers want to treat brandon boggs like a player they can option back and forth. boggs can let them do that . . . and given the frequency of brewers injuries this year, he'd be smart to do so.
  12. per the brewers 2011 media guide: started 2010 with the mets, was put on the disabled list 4/11/10. he was activated from the disabled list on 8/12/10 after completing a rehab assignment at triple-a, but he remained at triple-a after being optioned on that date. he was recalled by the mets on 9/6/10. his stint in the minors was longer than 20 days. spent all of 2009 with the mets. spent all of 2008 with the mariners. in 2007, green was recalled from triple-a tacoma on 4/19/07 but was optioned back the next day without making an appearance. he was recalled by seattle on 5/6/07, optioned back on 5/15/07, but then recalled for good on 5/23/07, spending the rest of the season with seattle. in 2006, green had four stints with seattle: 1. 4/30/06 - 6/8/06; then optioned to triple-a 2. 6/24/06 - 7/2/06; placed on the 15-day disabled list 7/3/06 - 7/28/06 3. activated from the 15-day disabled list 7/29/06; stayed with the club through 8/17/06 before being optioned to triple-a for just three days 4. recalled by seattle on 8/20/06; placed on the 60-day disabled list 9/8/06 through the rest of the season. the media guide does not state when the mariners purchased his contract and added him to the 40-man roster. presumably, it was before the 2006 season. based on this, i can't figure out how he has any minor league options remaining.
  13. you can say what you want about boggs over dickerson, but dickerson had a minor league option remaining. we could've shuffled him back and forth all we wanted this year. instead, now we risk losing brandon boggs to another organization every time he's sent to the minors.
  14. a player on the 40-man roster has a major league contract. usually, if he has minor league options remaining, he negotiates a split contract with a salary to earn while in the majors and a lower salary to earn while in the minors.
  15. but the brewers are going to sell more tickets with tony plush back on the roster!
  16. don't forget the scorpion sting.
  17. in defense of suppan, he removed the tags from the pillows after he purchased them.
  18. thanks . . . i only brought up boggs as an example. i'd appreciate it if the merits of his presence are discussed in the thread devoted to brandon boggs. i'm curious about player salaries . . . one would think that when a player accepts an assignment, he does so after signing a new contract. getting technical, if the player is not claimed and chooses to accept the assignment to the minor leagues, does he declare free agency but then immediately sign a minor league deal with the team that outrighted him?
  19. at the end of spring training, brandon boggs was outrighted to the minor leagues. he had the right to refuse the minor league assignment, but took it. presumably, his contract calls for a salary while in the minor leagues and a higher figure while in the major leagues or on the major league disabled list (commonly referred to as a split contract). it seems as if brandon boggs will be the odd man out when nyjer morgan is activated later today. boggs would have to be outrighted again. assuming no team claims him and places him on their major league roster, boggs will have the right to declare free agency . . . or accept the assignment (presumably to aaa nashville). in accepting that assignment, can boggs negotiate for a new contract . . . perhaps one that pays him more at the minor league level than before? were i him, i'd demand such, on the assumption that the brewers wouldn't want to be paying larger sums of money to a player kept at aaa . . . they'd want that money to help them at the major league level. i'd think that boggs would be in a position of leverage, considering that the brewers don't have any outfielders on their 40-man roster that they can option up and down this season. or does the player revert to the salary specified in his original contract?
  20. the brewers are best off having a starting pitcher on the 40-man roster getting regular work every fifth day at aaa. that player can't be mark rogers due to his recent injury, so it's marco estrada that's held as the #1 option if a starter is needed.
  21. mark rogers is injured . . . bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome, which prevents him from feeling his grip on the baseball.
  22. seems as if the brewers plan on cutting brandon boggs and aren't expecting him to accept being reassigned to nashville if he clears waivers.
  23. hart is batting 6th today, behind mcgehee. gomez is batting 2nd. given that gomez is swinging the bat well on the homestand, i like this.
