  1. pablo reyes has been reassigned to minor league camp.
  2. travis shaw has his contract selected and is added to the 40-man roster. shaw does have a minor league option remaining, but has enough service time to refuse the optional assignment. mark mathias has been placed on the 60-day injured list as the corresponding move. the 40-man roster is at capacity.
  3. as many expected, mark mathias has been placed on the 60-day injured list. torn labrum in his right shoulder.
  4. phil bickford has been sent to class aaa nashville on optional assignment. unless replacing an injured player or a player on leave, he must remain on optional assignment for at least 10 days, starting opening day. travis shaw has had his contract selected. mark mathias has been placed on the 60-day injured list.
  5. the brewers do plan to add travis shaw to the 40-man roster, but have a few days still to make the corresponding move to open up a spot for him. only four strikeouts in 26 cactus league plate appearances. hopefully, he continues to make contact in the championship season.
  6. luke barker made his cactus league debut today.
  7. ryan braun is in the radio booth with bob uecker right now. he says he's been working out (and had been with christian yelich). he has not picked up a bat or a ball since the conclusion of last season. he's not quite ready to say he's retired, though.
  8. you also have to consider that for the month of april, only players on the 28-man roster at the alternate training site can be called up. that depth needs to be preserved, and it would behoove the brewers for that alternate training site roster to be comprised of guys who have already ramped up during spring training, and also be comprised of guys who are major-league ready.
  9. Being 32 and with his service time, I'm sure he has an opt out if they are planning on him going down to start the year. boxberger's age has no bearing on his ability to require a retention bonus and a second opt-out date, but his service time does. there must be unconditional release or a retention bonus must be paid by 15 april if boxberger and/or zimmermann has not made the opening day roster or major league injured list. players paid the retention bonus can request to be granted their unconditional release on 1 june if they are not added to the 26-man roster or mlb injured list by then. this request must be submitted in writing no later than 28 may. it is possible for a player to have negotiated an earlier second opt-out date, but this is what boxberger is entitled to if he is paid the $100,000 retention bonus. ditto for zimmermann.
  10. also possible is the acquisition of a veteran arm released by another team at the conclusion of their spring training. potentially gives the club flexibility in opening the season with another player as outlined in this scenario. given the need to clear intake, i'm not sure how quickly a new acquisition could be officially activated.
  11. reported here that the brewers have some time beyond today to make it official, meaning the brewers can postpone a corresponding 40-man move.
  12. jacob nottingham is expected to catch in an intrasquad game later this week.
  13. hamstring discomfort confirmed.
  14. jacob nottingham is the designated hitter in today's cactus league game.
  15. still on track to make his cactus league debut as soon as 18 march . . .
  16. lorenzo cain should be in a game by the upcoming weekend.
  17. thomas jankins shut down with flexor strain. zack brown shut down with shoulder fatigue. brown remains in major league camp.
  18. no, not really . . . because david stearns made a distinction that early camp players were not non-roster invitees. pre-pandemic, there were fringe benefits that a player had in major league camp . . . access to certain parts of the facility, access to the food, possibly a per diem, and maybe more. when a player is returned to minor league camp, those benefits are cut off (but may be reinstated for the day if the guy is called over from minor league camp to play in a major league cactus game). furthermore, there's not a minor league camp like there was in the past. when spring training opened up with 76 guys, only 15 were considered "minor league camp". that's not enough players to fill four levels of affiliated baseball. brewers vp of minor league operations tom flanagan is going to have to figure out what to do with the non-roster invitees and early camp guys who remain in the organization but do not go north to milwaukee or the alternate training site. wave two of spring training starts in april and loads of players come to maryvale, but what do you do with these guys who are already stretched out, who have already cleared intake, who are already acclimated to spring training camp and are likely playing at 100%? do they shut them down for a little bit?
  19. blaine hardy made his first appearance in a cactus league game yesterday. scoreless inning with a strikeout. craig counsell expects hardy to be on track to be used regularly sometime in april. as to at what league level he will pitch, that remains to be seen.
  20. actually, it's unclear if shaw has to be added to the 40-man roster by tomorrow, or if an agreement must be reached to add him to the 40-man roster just before opening day. regardless, tomorrow is the reported opt-out date.
  21. mark mathias' shoulder injury is serious enough that he's reviewing treatment options.
  22. four players on the 40-man roster sent to class aaa nashville on optional assignment. unless replacing an injured player or a player on leave, they must remain on optional assignment for at least 10 days, starting opening day. c mario feliciano of corey ray rhp alec bettinger rhp dylan file both pitchers, because of injuries, had yet to appear in a cactus league game. 63 players remain in major league camp, plus one on the 60-day injured list.
  23. the brewers returned these players to minor league camp (whatever that is) today: of tristen lutz of garrett mitchell inf brice turang lhp clayton andrews rhp jake cousins rhp thomas jankins rhp miguel sánchez lhp ethan small lhp quintin torres-costa 12 non-roster invitees remain in major league camp.
  24. it's my understanding that another former brewer will be replacing jerry augustine for that regional sports network. he was a nashville sounds teammate of dillard's, and likely were on the same brewers roster from time to time. Tim as Harry Caray? nope.
