  1. note the difference between recalling a player and selecting the contract of a player. the brewers would have the flexibility to dfa or option a position player sooner than 10 days into the season after opening day if they were to select the contract of a minor leaguer such as brad boxberger, instead of recalling an optioned player. a roster spot could be created by dfa-ing a player as mentioned, or placing/transferring a player on/to the 60-day injured list. don't be surprised if a 10-day injured list guy gets transferred to the 60-day injured list.
  2. i still think that one of orlando arcia or luis urias is optioned when the club goes to 13/13.If Urias is the starting SS out of spring, I doubt they pull the plug on it that quickly. Robertson is out of options, and wouldn't Arcia have enough service time to refuse an option? If so you are kind of stuck with those 3 unless you flat out cut Arcia. Going down to 4 OF would seem to be the easier route.arcia can still be optioned. i can see how the club might be reluctant to option him in mid-april when there still isn't an official minor league season, but plans are in place for the alternate training site roster to play some exhibition games against other alternate training site teams.
  3. ji-man choi had an option. billy mckinney does not. i still think that one of orlando arcia or luis urias is optioned when the club goes to 13/13.
  4. zack godley pitched in a scrimmage yesterday. he will travel with the team to texas and then wisconsin and will be stretched out as a starter at the alternate training site.
  5. boxberger may have made his re-signing to a minor league contract conditional on the assurance of being placed on the taxi squad(s) for the brewers. the brewers did carry a non-roster player in shelby miller on their first taxi squad last year.
  6. brewers confirm that derek fisher (hamstring) will open the season on the injured list. billy mckinney has not been assured a spot on the 26-man roster yet.
  7. brewers confirm that justin topa (elbow) and bobby wahl (oblique) will open the season on the injured list.
  8. brewers confirm that nottingham will open the season on the injured list.
  9. brewers confirm that wahl will open the season on the injured list.
  10. brad boxberger has been re-signed to a minor league deal. he presumably will start the season at the alternate training site, unless a 40-man roster spot is opened up for him.
  11. not for the brewers, as those players are likely mostly early camp minor leaguers not in major league camp and rehabbing players. expect any player destined for the big leagues or the alternate training site roster (and possibly the injured list) to fly on a charter plane after today's final cactus league game to texas, and then onward to milwaukee. don't forget that mlb wants its players to avoid commercial air travel until at least may. charter flights keep the guys in a bubble. I thought they stayed in AZ until April 12th when ATS opens. Makes sense with commercial travel you also have to factor in that the second wave of spring training, set to last five weeks in arizona, will have new players that have to clear intake and get ramped up. doesn't make sense to keep a bunch of guys who have already cleared intake and are stretched out in arizona. one, you're reducing crowd sizes in arizona, and two, you're keeping the majority of the players on the same timeline of start-of-camp workouts instead of actual game playing in the first weeks of spring training 2.0. remember, for the month of april, clubs may only activate players from their alternate training site. the brewers obtained permission from mlb to conduct their alternate training site activities at american family field during the first homestand of the 2021 championship season and while the brewers are on their first road trip.

  13. jackie bradley, jr. and lorenzo cain got far fewer cactus league plate appearances than intended due to injuries. who knows how ready they'll both be for the grind of nine inning games in the early weeks of the season? barring an outside acquisition, mckinney makes the opening day roster.
  14. exhibition play against the white sox alternate training site roster confirmed.
  15. this transaction profile is wrong, correct? says ryon healy was sent outright to the sounds on 12 february 2021. he is no longer part of the organization, right?
  16. deal is official as of 19 march, but no official indication of being assigned to major league camp.
  17. zimmermann has been re-signed to a minor league deal, presumably with at least one opt-out clause.
  18. hedbert perez finally gets into a cactus league game, and presumably, will lead off the bottom of the 7th.
  19. jackie bradley, jr. (right wrist soreness) expects to be in the starting lineup tomorrow. the club is optimistic that he'll be ready opening day.
  20. david stearns hints that with off days, the club may open with more position players than pitchers. likely, 14 to 12. 10 days from opening day, the club will be free to recall any pitcher from the alternate training site if they option or dfa a position player. barring injury, i'd put one of orlando arcia or luis urias on the hot seat for optional assignment if the club decides to go to 13 pitchers later in april.
  21. brad boxberger has been released and is now a free agent. the brewers avoided paying boxberger a $100,000 retention bonus to ensure that he remained in the organization on a minor league deal. boxberger is free to negotiate a major or minor league deal with any club--including the brewers.
  22. by releasing zimmermann now, the brewers get out of paying him a $100,000 retention bonus to keep him in the organization. zimmermann is now a free agent.
  23. ray black hit 99 mph last night, striking out two.
  24. hoby milner can be optionedif added to the 40-man roster.
  25. zimmermann's opt-out date is saturday.
