  1. yeah, I read somewhere on Twitter that he had multiple options, but it appears he was optioned in 2019, and again last year, so he's down to his last one now. there were some muddy cases regarding last year's shortened season, but i think somehow, weigel's downtime after tommy john surgery is coming into play with the braves having petitioned for a fourth option year. but i thought clubs could only petition mlb for a fourth option year if the player had fewer than five years of active development and he had already burned all three options. weigel had yet to burn his third option, so a club couldn't petition for a fourth option until the upcoming offseason at the earliest. not being a braves fan, i haven't followed his career, so i can't comment any further. nor have i closely followed how mlb resolved the options issue with the shortened 2020 season.
  2. freddy peralta was one of three pitchers acquired from seattle for adam lind.
  3. Really? Wouldn't Orlando Arcia's removal from the 40-man take care of that? I suppose they could move Topa to the 60-day IL too. transferring topa is what they did. the brewers acquired two players on optional assignment with the braves, and only one spot was open at the time (most recently vacated by the outright assignment of ray black).
  4. the braves have optioned orlando arcia to their alternate training site.
  5. the brewers select the contract of brad boxberger. he is out of minor league options. to make room on the 40-man, justin topa was transferred to the 60-day injured list. the 40-man roster is at capacity.
  6. brad boxberger will have his contract selected and will be on the 26-man roster. a corresponding move on the 40-man is needed.
  7. collective player pool is now at 60 players with the subtraction of inf orlando arcia and the acquisition of rhp chad sobotka and rhp patrick weigel. both were on optional assignment with the braves in their final option years, and will remain on optional assignment at the alternate training site. again, still waiting for a formal alternate training site roster, which is supposed to be capped at 28. i suspect that the only reason garrett mitchell was brought north to the alternate training site was out of concern for his diabetes and the desire to ensure that he got a covid-19 vaccine. it's very possible that once sobotka and weigel clear intake in wisconsin, mitchell will be sent back to minor league spring training in arizona.
  8. i believe that while a trade may be official, 40-man roster status is in limbo until each player clears covid intake with the big league club or the alternate training site. orlando arcia traded to the atlanta braves for rhp chad sobotka and rhp patrick weigel. both were on optional assignment with the braves in their final option years, and will remain on optional assignment with the alternate training site. when both pitchers clear intake, the 40-man roster will be at capacity.
  9. even if the return is a player added to the 26-man roster, he would have to clear intake before being able to join the club. someone's getting recalled or added to the 40-man today.
  10. one would expect that a taxi squad player would be activated for tonight's game. a 40-man spot is open, and pablo reyes has options.
  11. nine players who were set to open the season with the nationals were placed on the injured list today for unspecified reasons (a 10th player, will harris, went on the injured list, but for right hand inflammation). of the nine replacements, seven were recalled (i.e. already on the 40-man roster). one (cody wilson) was on a minor league contract at the alternate training site and had his contract selected. the other (jonathan lucroy) was a minor league free agent and signed with the club. the nationals roster is at 33 players, with nine set to be added back to the roster once they clear covid testing. pay attention to cody wilson and jonathan lucroy moving forward if they are removed from the nationals' 26-man roster.
  12. as the brewers embark on their first road trip of the 2021 championship season, they are allowed to bring up to five players from the alternate training site roster as a taxi squad. if they bring five, at least one of them must be a catcher, and he may serve as a bullpen catcher during the road trip. taxi squad players may work out with the club, but are not allowed in uniform or in the dugout during games. last year, the brewers were quite secretive about their taxi squads, but observant fans might be able to compile a list of the players on each taxi squad (it may change from road trip to road trip). please report here if player sightings are confirmed.
  13. i remember watching the live stream of the phoenix city council meeting where they voted 6-2 to contribute $10 million to the maryvale renovation project over a five-year period as well as annual $1.4 million operating fees.
  14. great insight on what factors led to the decision. it culminated on a conference call with commissioner rob manfred and the executive council--eight mlb owners. mark attanasio is on said executive council, and evidently, provided counsel.
  15. also unknown by this writer for 2021: are trades limited to players in the 70-man collective player pool only? such restrictions were in place last year, after the transactions freeze was lifted. i'm sensing no, because there were no restrictions on trades during the off-season and during spring training, and you'd think that such a barrier would've been widely reported. clubs haven't seen many of their minor league players play since the 2019 season, and scouts from other clubs were barred in 2020, so it's difficult to evaluate trading chips. as minor league spring training gets underway, and the hopeful timely start of the minor league seasons in may, expect to see some minor trades of prospects as we inch closer and closer to the major league trading deadline (which presumably, will be end of july).
  16. the milwaukee journal-sentinel breaks down 2021 payroll and deferred payments.
  17. the entire nationals-mets series has been postponed.
  18. above is the group of "early camp" minor leaguers that were part of the cpp at the beginning of spring training. 3b luis castro was later added. they were not non-roster invitees. these are the players from the above list who were included in the initial list of 59 players in the championship season cpp, and presumably, traveled to milwaukee at the conclusion of spring training: rhp luke barker lhp leo crawford rhp bowden francis c/of cooper hummel of/1b dustin peterson inf/of jamie westbrook presumably, the other "early camp" players remained in arizona to continue spring training with the second wave of minor leaguers.
  19. i should also note that only players from this cpp can be used on the taxi squad for road trips, provided they are coming from the alternate training site.
  20. of these 12 non-roster invitees who were in the organization during the 2020 season (i.e. not "aaaa types" signed as free agents in the off-season), these players were not included in the brewers' initial submission of players for the collective player pool: rhp zack brown rhp jake cousins c payton henry rhp thomas jankins of tristen lutz we know that brown and jankins had been battling injuries. cousins and lutz didn't see any cactus league game action after being reassigned in mid-march. henry, even though reassigned, continued to appear in cactus league games towards the end of camp--as recently as 27 march.
  21. insight to the severity of wahl's injury? wahl was not included in the list of 59 players the brewers submitted to mlb as part of their collective player pool. the three others on the 10-day injured list were.
  22. looks like mlb has pared down the number of players allowed in the collective player pool from 75 at spring training to 70 for the championship season. only players in the cpp can play for the big league club or at the alternate training site. the brewers are carrying 59 guys in their cpp. 26 of the 59 are on the major league roster. 3 of the 59 are on the major league injured list. 30 of the 59 would be eligible for the alternate training site, but it's my understanding that those rosters were to be capped at 28. unlike last year, there is no risk in removing a player from the cpp, and provided there's room, a player can be added at any time. for the month of april, only players from the alternate training site can be promoted to the big league club. 26-man opening day roster and remaining players: pitchers: clayton andrews, aaron ashby, luke barker, phil bickford, ray black, brad boxberger, leo crawford, bowden francis, zack godley, blaine hardy, eric lauer, hoby milner, angel perdomo, miguel sanchez, ethan small, justin topa (injured list), quintin torres-costa and jordan zimmermann catchers: mario feliciano, luke maile and jacob nottingham (injured list) catcher/outfielder: cooper hummel infielders: zach green, brice turang and jamie westbrook infielder/outfielders: jace peterson, dustin peterson and pablo reyes outfielders: dylan cozens, derek fisher (injured list), garrett mitchell, corey ray and tyrone taylor 40-man roster players absent from this cpp: alec bettinger, dylan file and bobby wahl (injured list) we shall see if the brewers release a formal alternate training site roster. again, my understanding was that those rosters were to be capped at 28.
  23. jacob nottingham opens the season on the 10-day injured list.
  24. bobby wahl opens the season on the 10-day injured list.
