  1. craig counsell has not talked to ryan braun about his future since everyone parted ways after the wild card elimination.
  2. wow. i really like this suggestion of eliminating the dh once the starting pitcher is pulled. i think the only instance where i wouldn't like this idea would be having to scrap the dh if a starting pitcher left early due to an injury. a single injury shouldn't force two players from the game.
  3. Pretty sure I've seen multi year minor league contracts before, in situations like this. But even if not, he can be added to the 40-man roster at the end of the season if they want to keep him. yes, you have. you've also seen threads on minor league signings without invitations to big league camp (such as this one) moved to the minor league forum.
  4. also a subtle nod to those upset by this socially correct renaming.
  5. rule 5 draft picks still cost $100,000--which is roughly a month's salary for a rookie making the minimum. clubs can get 50% back by offering the rule 6 player back to the original club.
  6. barring a trade (which is unlikely), the brewers will not be carrying a rule 6 player on their 40-man roster this season.
  7. is there any word yet on class aaa league realignment? as a minneapolis resident, i'm pretty excited about potentially being able to see the sounds play within bicycling distance.
  8. the luke maile signing is official. i cannot recall if the brewers have ever had six catchers on their 40-man roster (at least twice in this century prior to adding mario feliciano, they've carried five). the roster is at 36 players.
  9. luke maile signing is official.
  10. Is that a good thing? yes. i have been in need of an association more contemporary than wes helms on a salad.
  11. i'm glad he's back because it gives me someone to think about every time someone posts "lightening in a bottle".
  12. first off, you're assuming that knebel goes all the way to an arbitration hearing. most players agree to terms ahead of a scheduled hearing. second, these contracts are not fully guaranteed if the player is cut during spring training. clubs still have to shell out a bit of pro-rated pay once opening day hits (which is the same time that rostered players start getting paid).
  13. newly signed zach green is eligible for the rule 5 draft.
  14. zach green has been signed to a minor league contract, with an invitation to big league spring training. green appears to have two minor league options remaining, but has previously been outrighted to the minor leagues. he is the first non-roster invitee to 2021 camp.
  15. Or, they wanted the opportunity to evaluate him at a closer level right now, gave up little to do so, and can cut him in the spring and only pay a few hundred K of his salary if they don't like what they see.... one-sixth of $5mm is $833,333. that's a bit more than a few hundred thousand (but probably not to the dodgers . . .)
  16. the dodgers traded for corey knebel without knowing whether he'll settle ahead of arbitration, or head to arbitration with the team. the brewers acquired omar narvaez before his 2020 salary was known (but after the mariners had agreed to tender him), and he settled without arbitration. clubs agree to tender contracts by the arbitration deadline. if a contract isn't reached, then the club and the player head to an arbitration hearing--each with a salary figure. one of those two figures becomes the player's salary for the season . . . no compromising at this point . . . it's one or the other.
  17. alex claudio, ben gamel and jace peterson have not been tendered contracts for 2021 and are now free agents. corey knebel traded to the dodgers for cash or a player to be named later. the roster is at 35 players.
  18. the brewers could be heading to arbitration hearings with josh hader and brandon woodruff. they are the only remaining players on the brewers roster who are eligible for salary arbitration. alex claudio, ben gamel and jace peterson have not been tendered contracts for 2021 and are now free agents. corey knebel has been traded to the dodgers for cash or a player to be named. he is still eligible for salary arbitration with the dodgers. orlando arcia, omar narvaez, manny pina and daniel vogelbach were signed to one year deals, all avoiding salary arbitration.
  19. travis shaw has been non-tendered by the blue jays. he is now a free agent.
  20. only $233,333 of that salary is guaranteed. considering that a waiver claim costs $100,000, it's a relatively low-risk move if mlb and the mlbpa do not agree to a designated hitter for 2021.
  21. it's worth noting that last year, the brewers signed arcia to a non-guaranteed contract just after acquiring luis urias. arcia went on to have a hot cactus league and urias, out with an injury, never got a chance to battle for a spot. time will tell what happens next . . .
  22. "Arcia's deal is not guaranteed" ? I guess that would suggest it is incentive laden, or contingent on a certain number of AB's? no. unless the rule has changed, clubs can keep arbitration-eligible players on their roster until late spring training, and then cut them. if they do so, they're on the hook for only one-sixth of the salary.
  23. luke maile burned his options in 2016 and 2017, so he has one remaining. he has been placed on outright waivers the past two offseasons, with no teams paying the fee to claim him. this deal is not official, but at present, a spot is open on the 40-man roster to add him.
  24. tomorrow is the deadline to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players.
