  1. alec bettinger, mario feliciano and dylan file all had their contracts selected yesterday. all three will enter 2021 spring training with three minor league options. the 40-man roster is at 39 players.
  2. it's highly unlikely that trey supak will become a rule 6 player in 2021. earlier this year, any club could have claimed him when the brewers placed him on outright waivers, immediately optioned him to the minor leagues, and would have had the flexibility to option him again in 2021. as we all know, rule 6 players cannot be optioned in the season immediately following the rule 5 draft. but, supak does remain eligible for the rule 5 draft. remember brewers pitcher victor santos? in 2005, the brewers outrighted him to the minor leagues. no other team claimed him, and he elected free agency. he signed with the royals in november to a minor league deal, and the following month, the pirates snatched him away from the royals via the rule 5 draft. he spent the entire 2006 season with the pirates as a rule 6 player.
  3. players not added are still on minor league contracts and are rightfully discussed in the minor league forum.
  4. not necessarily. the 2014 rule 4 draft pick still could be on the 2021 brewers 26-man roster all year as a rule 6 player if he's selected by the club in the 2020 rule 5 draft.
  5. the last time the brewers carried five catchers on the 40-man roster was in the 2017 offseason, after adding jacob nottingham to prevent him from becoming property of another team as a rule 6 player.
  6. c mario feliciano, rhp alec bettinger and rhp dylan file have been selected to the 40-man roster, which now stands at 39.
  7. Yes, I was thinking about this also. If there is any year for the Brewers to draft a player here, it would be this one. Conversely, I think they will protect more than in the past - despite not having any sure-fire MLB players to protect. Feliciano seems to be the best bet. Spanderberg [sic] or Hummel due to lack of MLB options and a few pitchers - File and Brown seem most likely. on the flip side, no outside scouts have had access to these players since mid-march when spring training camps were shut down. and many of the players lacked any formal competition against players outside of their organization. and as will sammon points out, brewers pitchers in grand chute were facing the same batters over and over again, so it's harder to assess development or regression on both sides. and finally, only 11 players were taken in last year's rule 5 draft--the fewest since 2000. this is significant because clubs were able to count on having a 26th roster spot all season.
  8. raise your hand if you're frustrated that the universal designated hitter hasn't been confirmed yet for 2021.
  9. the deadline to protect players from the rule 5 draft is friday. will the club open up additional spots by outrighting any of the arbitration-eligible players off the 40-man ahead of that deadline?
  10. adam mccalvy chimes in on the subject . . .
  11. BLM, Kneeling for the anthem, just to name a couple... Huh. That’s weird. Never in a million years would I have thought those things were political. Im usually taking a leak or buying a beer when the anthem comes on, and unless the guy pouring me the beer stops, I don’t either. People today would have been irate about Jackie Robinson I suppose. that's because they're social issues, not political issues.
  12. what is the significance of the 11 november transaction assigning arbert cipion to the brewers? wasn't he already on the instructional league roster?
  13. in 2020 cy young balloting, corbin burnes got a 4th place vote and ten 5th place votes.
  14. expect mlb to aggressively pursue means of getting fans in the stands in 2021.
  15. positive news on shoulder recovery from the rookie of the year himself . . .
  16. lorenzo cain has been activated from the restricted list. how will taking nearly a full season off from playing affect him moving forward?
  17. lorenzo cain was activated from the restricted list on monday. the roster is at 36 players.
  18. devin williams is among three finalists for nl rookie of the yar.
  19. also keep in mind that 2021 could be the first full season with a 26-man roster. in 2019, clubs had a 25-man roster. makes it easier to bury a rule 6* player. *no . . . that's not a typo. once a player is selected in the rule 5 draft, he becomes a rule 6 player.
  20. both ronny rodriguez and trey supak became minor league free agents last night.
  21. ryon healy, outrighted off the 40-man roster last week, reserved the right to refuse the minor league assignment and opt for free agency. he has filed for free agency.
  22. it is expected that ryon healy will opt for free agency.
  23. by outrighting ryon healy today, the brewers removed an arbitration-eligible player from their roster. but by declining ben gamel's option, they gained an arbitration-eligible player. gamel's 2020 salary (without prorating) was $1.4 mm.
  24. jedd gyorko and eric sogard had their club options declined, and are now free agents. ryon healy cleared outright waivers and has been removed from the 40-man roster. healy reserves the right to become a free agent, or he can accept an assignment in the brewers' minor league system. the roster is at 35, with lorenzo cain on the restricted list.
