  1. I would be perfectly happy with the offseason for the offense and defense standpoint if Barmes and Cuddyer are added to the team. I don't know a lick about Cuddyer's defense so I don't know who would play 1st and RF between Hart & Cuddyer. I would guess they are pretty interchangeable. Sign Barmes and Cuddyer, resign Saito, and bring in one more 7th or 8th inning type and I would be pretty happy. Perhaps trade Narveson or Wolf and see what that could get you.
  2. If the Cards find a way to win last nights game they just aren't going to lose tonight. This is just there year; just a crazy crazy run. David Freese has been amazing the entire postseason; when you add him to Pujols, Berkman, Holliday, Furcal, Etc that is a damn fine line up. I was one strike away and maybe a couple inches away from celebrating a Rangers Win / Cards loss; it has got to be hard to come from that for the Rangers
  3. Selling High just rarely happens for small to mid market teams. Those teams just don't trade players coming off of good years who are affordable. I don't think you can really fault GM's for not trading guys after they have good years. They are after all trying to field a good team.
  4. I definitely agree with you there. However If Estrada and one of Fiers/Peralta are available for 6th starter duty I think we would be OK. I would probably like a little more quality AAA depth though unless Rivas or FDLC count. If you have more than 2 regular starters going out for an extended period of time you are probably screwed anyways.
  5. But if we have two similarily priced and even cheaper players that could replace Narveson in Fiers and Peralta (That could potentially duplicate his performance) I don't see the big problem with cost controls here. If anything since Narveson is cheap and controllable for 4 more years we should be able to get an OK return on him. Basically if Melvin is confident that either Fiers or Peralta can be effective in 2012 I have no problems trading Narveson. You still could have plenty of cheap options going forward in 2013 including Peralta, Fiers, Thornburg, the 2011 1st rounders, among others. I don't think Melvin should be to worried about trading away one cost controlled pitcher.
  6. I have to imagine Narveson's spot is up for grabs; especially if another team likes Narvy enough to give us a SS. I highly doubt any of the Top #4 get traded; but if I had to pick one I would say Wolf just because he would be a good Sell High candidate after the strong year and strong posteason start
  7. Its pretty simple. Every current manager of every current MLB team is the worst manager ever (Unless you win the WS). It just isn't as simple as just looking at stats to run a baseball team and I don't pretend to know all the nuinances of the job. Thats why I tend to give managers the benefit of the doubt in most cases. When a manager has good players he tends to win games; when he has bad players he tends to lose games. Obviously different managers have different styles but I don't think MLB managers have a monstrous effect on the outcome over the course of a season; it all comes down to the players/health/schedule/etc. INdividual games maybe the influence is a little higher; I am just not convinced that a different manager would have somehow gotten the Brewers 3 more wins over the course of the year or would have prevented the collapse in the NLCS. No matter who the manager is, fans are going to have issues with them because it is virtually impossible to manage a baseball team how a fan wants it managed. On the other hand, I believe NFL coaches have by far a bigger role in there team's success/failure.
  8. Has there ever been a 6-7-8 year deal that actually worked for the entire length of the contract? You would think teams would start to get a clue that perhaps 6+ year deals just aren't good ideas unless the last couple of years are team options.
  9. I still say it is highly unlikely Yuni is back; he would be due for a $2 Million raise and Melvin will have an opportunity to improve the position this year. Last year he was probably more or less forced to take him in the Grienke deal and with a $4 Million salary he was hesitant to just dump the guy. My opinion is that there is about a 15% chance that Yuni is back. Doug could find plenty of ways to spend that $6 Million that would be due to Yuni.
  10. He is going to get non tendered; Melvin won't want to risk paying too much for a guy who had a horrible year. Espcially when he has so many other holes to fill. Hairston might have the job at this point and obviously Green is in the mix as well. No need to pay a couple million bucks to a guy who hit .220 for the year who is a below average fielder at best.
  11. I don't think there is anyway that Melvin/RR would gamble on 3 rookies in the starting lineup. One or two maybe; but not 3. I don't think that Melvin is really all that enamored with Green, Schafer, or Gamel. I wouldn't be suprised at all if those guys are either not in the organization next year or they are still in AAA.
  12. Fielder - Gone Weeks - Stays Betancourt - Gone Hairston - Stays McGehee - Gone (Non Tendered) Counsell - Gone Green - Stays Lucroy - Stays Kottaras - Probably Stays Hart - Traded Morgan -Stays Gomez - Stays Braun - Stays Kotsay - Gone Gallardo - Stays Grienke - Stays Marcum - Stays Wolf - Stays Narveson - Who Knows (maybe traded for SS) Axford - Stays Saito - Stays Hawkins - Gone Krod - Gone Loe - Gone Estrada - Stays
  13. Overall RR was fine this year. Yes there were a handful of questionable calls but I thought he did great as a 1st time manager. He certainly wasn't the reason they fell apart in the NLCS. There is only so much he could have done. I would say he contributed to the meltdown but he certainly wasn't the primary problem. I am not about to go out and give him an extension; I do want to see how he does next year with presumably a very different team (That hopefully is less top heavy and more balanced). Just my opinion but people focus way to much on managers in baseball. If you have good players you win; if you have bad players you don't. Everybody is lauding TLR but he was taking a huge risk going to the bullpen so early every game. What if that hadn't turned out; people in STL would want to ride him out of town. The fact is that the players he put in there executed like they were supposed to so they made TLR look good. Its pretty easy to look good as a manager when your entire lineup is mashing at the same time and your bullpen appears invincible. And it is pretty easy to look bad when the players don't execute like they had all year.
  14. This was the most successful Brewers team in my lifetime. I consider it a success for the most part. The Brewers really brought this upon themselves by not beating the Cards late in the season. My overall feeling is TBD because I need to know if this is going to be a one and done type situation or if the Brewers are going to get another crack at this in the near future. More than anything I will remember the monumental failing of a supposedly really good pitching staff. If Marcum is on the team next year all that I will remember is his awful showing this year. Same goes for Grienke but maybe to a lower extent.
  15. Yeah he isn't coming back. He will always have a place in my Brewers fandom but it is time to move on. I will always love the guy so long as he goes to the AL. However count me as very skeptical that a team is going to break the bank on him. I just don't think he is going to get as much as people think. 5 years probably, 6 maybe, 7 no way in hell.
  16. Well atleast the torment of today is finally over. Overall great year; just played really bad at the worst possible time.
  17. Simple solution; I will not watch any MLBNetwork, ESPN, or Local News for the next week
  18. Axford has been crazy good; should be interesting to see how Melvin fills out the rest of the bullpen since they are all FA.
  19. that's basically what it should have been. Your best pitchers need to pitch before Loe does IDK; it was 5-4 after the first 2 innings; I don't think the time was right to go to your back end of the bullpen guys. And by the time Narveson got done throwing up his meatballs it was already too late.
  20. No kidding; if Freese just happened to miss a mistake pitch in the 1st, who knows what could have happened. Of course we probably couldn't count on the Cards missing our other 15 mistake pitches too.
  21. A reason to watch the 9th - We also get to watch Yuni's last AB as a Brewer (O please God let it be true). Not to take anything away from his decent postseason but I don't think I can take another 162 games of him.
  22. Yeah I thought I was going to be pissed off if we lost to the Cards; but when it is pretty evident that we just ran into a really hot team (While also playing pretty crappy ourselves) it does make it easier to stomach. They were outplayed; plain and simple
  23. The STL are so much like the 2010 Packers it isn't even funny. Packers squeak into the playoffs, in part, because the NYG choke late in the season. STL squeaks into the playoffs, in part, because ATL chokes late in the season GB goes ont the road to PHI, Wins STL goes on the road to PHI, Wins GB plays division rival who won division; proceeds to beat them pretty handily STL plays division rival who won division, proceeds to beat them pretty handily The only thing that doesn't match is TEX; so I don't know how that will play out Wisconsin sports fans have been spoiled recently; I guess we were due for a let down sooner or later
  24. Hindsight is always great; people were jumping for joy when Narveson came in and look how that turned out. I reasonably expected Loe to be fine since he was facing righties; obviously that didn't work either.
