  1. Marlins might be bankrupt in 2 or 3 years; especially when the new stadium fad wears off and they get 10,000 fans a game again. Plus these contracts to Reyes and Buehrle will likely make them untradeable. If Pujols or Wilson is added it makes the problem even worse.
  2. If he really is worse than McGehee than the only way I want him is if we update SS on the defensive side to make up for some of those shortcoming. Need to find someone with some range to his right.
  3. I would be all for that if I thought we had the pieces to get Sanchez. I would be fine with Rollins at SS, Casey/Green at 3rd, and Sanchez at 1st. I don't think we have the pieces to get Sanchez though; the Marlins would be looking for pitching and I doubt they would want Wolf or Marcum and guys like Peralta or Fiers probably aren't good enough prospects. It still sounds like Rollins ends up in PHI anyways; so this is probably a mute point
  4. Even if Ramirez isn't that good of a defender he is still better than Casey right? If we had Aram at 3rd and Alex Gonzalez at SS I would think defense would be a wash at worst (as compared to last year) with a likely substantial improvement in offensive output. Granted the cost of Ramirez and Gonzalez would probably be around $12-14 Million or so and we spent about $5 Million on Casey/Yuni last year; but I think the upgrade would be substantial enough to make it worth it. We arguably had the worst everyday SS and the worst everday 3B in the entire NL last year and we still made the NLCS. Even with the loss of Fielder improvements in these two areas could get us right back in the NLCS again.
  5. Aram the last 4 years: 2008 - 289/380/518 2009 - 317/389/516 2010 - 241/294/452 2011 - 306/361/510 The guy obviously had a bad year in 2010 but otherwise he has been a model of consistency for the last 7 or 8 years. Obviously the guy is getting older but I don't see how those numbers wouldn't be of great benefit to the Crew. Comparing his patience to Yuni is a little ridiculous in my mind; he doesn't walk like Prince walks but he is not at Yuni's level either. Obviously it all depends on the contract he gets but I think he would be a huge addition to the club if it were to happen. Not saying that it couldn't end badly; but Aram has been pretty darn consistent over the years. Since 2004 he has had an OPS less than .800 only once (2010) and an OPS over 850 in every other year including 2011.
  6. The Brewers could cut him prior to Spring Training and only pay him 1/6th of the contract if I am not mistaken. So if it comes to that and Melvin can't trade him we could cut him and only have to pay between $2 and $3 Million It just sucks because Krod is holding the Brewers hostage until he decides whether or not to accept arby. So until Melvin knows one way or the other sometime tomorrow I doubt he signs any big deals. We only have to wait one more day but you would hate for that wait to cost us a chance at a good player.
  7. That lineup would certianly be more balanced than 2011; although obviously missing Fielder and his OBP and HR would hurt. However we could defintiely compete for a World Series with that lineup assuming the starting pitching stays intact and we have some resemblance of a decent bullpen.
  8. I am starting to get my hopes up that Aram is going to be a Brewer next year. I guess it all depends on the contract. We are the supposed "favorites" to land him. I guess I don't buy that Aram is worse than Casey; he has to have more range right? You can't have less range than Casey and Yuni had on the left side last year. Obviously I didn't watch every Cubs game last year but it sure seemed like Aram was a capable defender but made some poor plays every now and then
  9. Suppan was 5 years ago already; Melvin has consistently made moves to improve the team. If he thinks the Brewers can compete next year; no doubt he will try to improve the team as much as he can. If it turns out that we didn't land the pieces needed; I'll still believe he gave it a shot but just happened to get outbid. Melvin has done enough good things for this team that I am willing to trust him; its not like we have these huge holes and Spring Training starts next week; he has two months to figure this out yet. I will not be suprised at all if either Ramirez or Rollins is with the Crew next year; but almost no shot at both unless someone like Hart or Wolf is shipped out.
  10. Its obviously way to early to assume that either McGehee or Yuni will be back solely because Hairston wasn't resigned. Way to many different things can happen at this point. I am pretty convinced that Melvin will bring in either a SS or a 3B; which position who knows.
  11. I liked him while he was here but since when do aging utility players get two year contracts? I would have liked him on a one year deal; multi year deals for players like Hairston seem unnecessary to me
  12. Lot of rumors out there saying it is between Brewers and Phillies for Jimmy Rollins and that the Brewers are genuinely interested. I am 90% sure Rollins is just using the Brewers for leverage; I just don't think he is leaving Philly. Apparently a meeting between Philly and Rollins did not go well at the Winter Meetings. Rollins wants 5 years and PHI only wants 3. I am not sure if I would want the Brewers to sign this guy for 4 years (definitely not 5) but this would be a pretty huge upgrade at SS if it were to happen. Melvin would probably have to go to the scrap heap or stay internal to fill the remaining positions if we were to commit a substantial salary to Rollins
  13. You can't base your budget entirely on what happened last year because that 3 million in attendance and playoff games would go on their 2011 fiscal year and shouldn't be included when determining their 2012 budget. Granted the attendance and playoff gate may have allowed the team to generate a pretty solid profit last year but it shouldn't be used to determine a future budget becuase it would be unwise to assume the same thing happens again in 2012. Obviously if it doesn't Mark A could lose money or we could be forced to be a seller at the trade deadline. I highly doubt that the Brewers use a 3 million attendance mark when filling out the budget because that is a number that Milwaukee probably won't hit year in and and year out. I would guess the Brewers budget for 2.8 million or so; at that level you certainly can't have a $100 million payroll. All things considered including the small market a payroll around $90 Million is really rather incredible as it is.
  14. http://bbwaa.com/ Linke to Baseball Writers Association which shows the vote totals. John Axford got a couple votes as well. Like I mentioned in the other thread some moron voter only gave Fielder a 10th place vote; some writer must have a vendetta against him.
  15. How exactly did 6 people think Prince deserved no more than a 6th place finish? What the hell? Congrats Ryan; I thought it was going to be a close win for Kemp; but Braun definitely deserved it.
  16. Jonathen Sanchez does nothing for me. Both Cabrera and Snachez will be utter dissappointments for there new teams in 2012.
  17. The Marlins are rumored to be going after everyone including Reyes, Fielder, Pujols, and Buehrle. I have to imagine Reyes is probably #4 on that list. I am not opposed to signing Reyes; but the likelihood of this turning into a bad contract 3-4 years from now seems pretty high. However in the meantime our lineup would be pretty sweet even without Fielder. Granted going from Fielder to Gamel sucks quite a bit but going from Yuni to Reyes would be glorious. If you can limit it to a 5 year contract with a 6 year mutual option I say go for it even if it is understood that the last year or two could be an albatross. Obviously it comes down to the dollars though and I probably wouldn't want to pay him anymore than $16-$17M annually. The question then becomes who do the Brewers jettison so they can afford him. Obviously Marcum, Hart, and Wolf are probably the most logical options. They couldn't sign Reyes for $16M and still be able to fill the other holes while staying under $95 Million.
  18. So the fact that Marcum was a big part in the most successful season in 30 years means nothing? Just the fact that we made the NLCS and Marcum was a very good pitcher for a very large portion of the year already disqualifies it as a horrible trade IMO. Now it may not be a great trade but it comes no where near the worst trade in history especially when you are basing that conclusion off of less than 1/2 a year of Brett Lawrie.
  19. It's also simply called aging. Some guys age better than others. Rickie Weeks is a shell of the speedster he used to be, & a fringe-average fielder too, but no one's calling him lazy. I am not sure those situations are comparable. Rickie may have lost some speed along the way; but Hart fell off a cliff. He went from running the fast 40 time in camp to being one of the most unathletic guys on the team in 2 years. I don't know if he just bulked up to much or likes to eat to much; but the athleticism just isn't there anymore
  20. I would take him back for sure. Big defensive upgrade over Kottaras and still has some pop in the bat. Wouldn't be my first choice but I could live with him
  21. IMO Braun and it really isn't all that close. Hart really seemed to regress this year.
  22. If this is indeed a Gold Glove for a LF Braun is a fine choice; obviously there are a ton of other OF that would be more deserving if the gold glove was for OF.. Braun is a better fielder than Holliday; don't know about Parra. Braun will probably get it simply for his offensive season.
  23. Why are all these national sports writers saying we are the front runner? What part of the Milwaukee Brewers's history makes people believe that we are going to sign one of the highest priced free agents of the offseason? I am sorry I just to do not believe that Melvin is going to offer the most money to Reyes. The Brewers likely cannot sustain a long term payroll at $100 Million or above and they would almost certainly need that high of a payroll to remain competitive if both Reyes and Braun are locked into long term contracts. Not to mention guys like Gallardo & Weeks who are probably in the long term plans as well. What happens if the Brewers have two consecutive poor years and attendance drops to 2.5 million or less and they can't afford the $90-$100 Million in payroll? Our stars are going to be on the chopping block and all of a sudden we are in rebuilding mode.
  24. Or let one of them battle for a spot and move Narveson to the bullpen. No reason to trade from your SP depth if you don't think you have to. Also, why on earth would we trade Marcum when his value can't possible be lower? He has injury rumors that are unsubstantiated and posted an ERA of 9 during the past 6 weeks. Why not wait for him to reestablish himself (which he will).Just my opinion but assuming Marcum's health would be verified by a physical I don't think to many teams are going to shy away from him because of a bad month. Smart teams would see how good he was for the last couple years and realize September/October was just a bad stretch. Whatever team trades for him would have him take a physical; assuming there are no issues there is no reason to believe he wouldn't reveryt back to good Marcum. That said we aren't going to get a Top #50 prospect for him most likely unless more is included from the Brewers side. I would just assume we keep him but would be OK trading him so long as we get something decent. I just doubt Melvin is going to turn around and trade the guy because of 6 bad weeks since he did trade his top prospect for him less than 12 months ago.
  25. I think signing Reyes for 5+ years and $100 Million + would be a terrible idea. Granted I would love to see him in a Brewers uniform but there are just so many good reasons not to sign him. Obviously he has an injury history. The Brewers budget would be pretty tight with not a whole lot of flexibility for future extensions; especially considering Braun is going to get expensive soon. If we sign Reyes you can forget about signing Grienke and we would probably have to trade a high priced player (Like Hart, Wolf, or Marcum) just to fit him in this years budget while still finding solutions at 1st, 3rd, and possibly OF. Don't get me wrong I would love to have Reyes but signing him would probably cause some other holes to come up or other holes to get filled by mediocre talent. If signing Reyes means we have a Green/McGehee platoon at 3rd, Gamel at 1st, and Fiers/Peralta and Narveson in the rotation (Assuming we trade Wolf or Marcum) are we really any better than last year especially since you can count on Reyes missing 20 games every year.
