  1. All I can say is that I sure do hate the Doug Davis trade right now. Not because we lost Sharpie in a gamble, but because Eveland is doing so well, and nobody seems to want any of the players we picked up in that trade.
  2. I think I agree with this. "Dumb" may be a harsh conclusion, but there's definitely a dearth of fan decorum in Milwaukee lately. I remember during the 1982 World Series how the TV announcers would say what great fans we had in Milwaukee. Now mind you, we were an AL champion team then, and there were fewer frustrations to inspire boos, but I am appalled by all the booing that goes on at Miller Park. It did irk me when Wes Helms said that we booed Jenkins when we didn't, but it does go to show that fans booing Jenkins is believable. I was happy to see that the fans cheered for Randy Johnson's K record, and thought maybe there is some hope, but Milwaukee has become, disappointingly, very boo happy.
  3. What is wild is that a friend of mine who was very sick went to Cubanita's last night and then suddenly became better. Now I know why. He also said that at Cubanita's a strange new phenomenon has been observed. Every time you eat there now the food is either really awesome, misses completely, or is free.
  4. It is true that the Japanese don't significantly differentiate between R and L phonemes, and thus some Japanese speakers of English will not stress the "L" sound when it comes up and it sounds more like what we think of as an "R". I used to live in Japan and teach English, and some of my students would make fun of themselves for that (Not half as much as they made fun of my Japanese though). So part of me finds sound of "Hory Cow" as funny in a certain context. But that shirt does have a bit of a WWII Bugs Bunny anti-Japanese propoganda feel about it. I have to admit I can't tell if the cub is supposed to have an epicanthic fold to appear Asian. That would totally give it the WWII propaganda look.
  5. Here's what I can see happening: The Crew takes 2 out of 3 from the BoSox. Lose 2 out of 3 against the Buccos. Split with the Nats. I know that exact pattern isn't likely, but as Brewer fan, it just seems to me to be our fate. I know, a .500 road trip would be great, but it's just too easy to imagine an unlikely great series followed by two disappointing ones. That will give the sports writers, radio personalities, and fans fuel to say, "You take two from Boston, and then lose against Pittsburgh and Washington? How is that possible. There's a real problem with this team here." I'm going to Fenway on Saturday and Sunday, so if they only win one, I hope it's one of those.
  6. This puts us even with the Cubs. Now they can have an aging overpriced CF too.
  7. I'll be in the rightfield grandstand on both Saturday and Sunday.
  8. Some questions: For those who believe the Crew would have to be about 6 games under at the end of May, what do they think the value is in firing Yost? I mean at that point, does anybody really think the Brewers will have a shot at climbing back? It seems to me that if DM is going to fire Yost, he's going to do it because he thinks that's what's needed to preserve the chances at a competitive season (and his own job). If the Brewers are 7 games under, and the Cubs are hot (and the Cubs have been favorites all along), then what's the point of the last ditch effort? And, if Yost is jettisoned and the Brewers are that far under, will the Brewers trade for starting pitching? Or would that happen in the off-season using nuggets we get from the likely Sheets trade?
  9. On the bright side, he can't be any worse at managing than he is at coaching third base. I have this image of Sveum waving in the relief pitchers from the bullpen to the mound, and them getting hurt at the pitchers mound. So, I think that would be worse.
  10. I 100% agree with this. This is the one bright spot in the season so far. Here's to hoping he stays truly healthy (as opposed to just baseball healthy).
  11. I don't follow the SOS much, and I'm not much of a stathead either. But I did find it interesting when looking at the "Adjusted Standings" on Baseball Prospectus, that compared to the Cubs and Cards, the Brewers had faced better hitting and pitching. But since I don't really understand how they compute AEQR and AEQRA and the like, I don't think about it too much since I am ignorant about it. Besides. Last season taught me again that "it's a long season, and you just have to trust it."
  12. In Adam McCalvey's mailbag the other day (4/28) on brewers.com, he answered a question about Rickie saying that it was his job as a lead off hitter to see a few more pitches so that other batters could get a good look at the pitcher. But it seems to me that that shouldn't raise his "fake plate discipline" that much since he really only has to do it once per game (unless the opposing team switches pitchers right before he comes up to bat). I have wondered if Rickie wasn't "over doing" the plate discipline. Is there any evidence, ever, of a person who truly learns plate discipline? Or do your numbers pretty much stay within a range throughout your career?

  14. I think this is a very short sighted view of things, there is no way you put either of the last 2 BS on Gagne. He should have never been in the one game and a bad umpire and error caused the second one. Is this not the vent thread? Is this not the forum to expel your visceral reactions to things you don't like and cast them away? I mean if I had said that in a "Objective View of the Bullpen" thread, you're right on. But having said that, I'm still not overly confident in Gagne and most of our bullpen. ----- Continued here: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=30555
  15. I am starting to think that Melvin is like that dumb guy in your fantasy baseball league that you can trade anything for if you dangle some has-been in front of them. This Gagne experiment has been horrible, and I really can't imagine it somehow rectifying itself. Maybe we need a separate GM for bullpen moves.
  16. Suddenly that Doug Davis trade last year doesn't seem as good. Aquino tanked right away, and a year later we had to essentially let go of two of the pieces of the trade. You could argue that Estrada did get us the inside track on Mota, but that doesn't excite me. I can't help but feel that DM is losing his touch.
  17. What goes around comes around I guess. This guy probably realizes that there are a lot of people who hate Cubs fans. Sometimes the hater is even the . (Warning: Link goes to some nasty, nasty, but not wholly inappropriate language)
  18. I didn't think you could be exceedingly clueless either, but he sure showed me.
  19. Also, I can't help but think how many times Lidge was in a rumor at the trade deadline. It's just too early in the "trading season" to trade away a guy like that when so many teams are trying to resolve bullpen issues. I think they could have gotten more had they waited.
  20. I don't understand your reasoning. It seems to me that if you DO have automatic outs in your lineup, you have employ strategy regarding when to pull a pitcher based on whether the AB at hand is more important then keeping the pitcher in. Whereas with the DH you set your lineup and let it go. You put relief pitchers in and only worry about pulling them when they seem to be losing their stuff or encounter an unfavorable matchup. Also, some pitchers can actually hit, and some are least fairly good situational hitters. So it's not like each team always has one automatic out they have to deal with. So, I am genuinely curious as to where you see more strategy with the DH.
  21. Well.....that does make you rethink "American" doesn't it?
  22. Amen. Also, when bikers breeze through stop signs and almost hit you when you're walking and look at you like you're in their way.
  23. People casemarking their pronouns incorrectly. 1) When people oversuse "I" and say or write things like, "You can send that email to Jim or I". It's "Jim or me". You wouldn't say, "you can send that to I." 2) When people misuse "whom". I see people say things like, "If Jim or whomever gives us the information we need..." Whom is to be used only in the accusative or dative case. The fact that this bothers me really bothers me. I have become my parents and I always hated grammar in grade school.
  24. Somebody clear something up for me...are the Miller and Coors breweries merging, or are the moderators just going to merge the Miller thread with the Coors thread? Is that what this is about?
  25. I totally agree, but the chances the Brewers can get a pricey import like him are pretty slim. And according to MLBTradeRumors.com the Padres also have him on their radar. So it's not like we can bring him through the backdoor without some market competition.
