  1. Does the MVP get a Spring Training Invite to be in the mix at 1B?
  2. So Weeks refers to Doug Melvin as "Doug" and Ron Roenicke is "the manager." Not sure how much to read into that, but I think Mark's individual exit interviews he's performing with a handful of players is really his way of getting a true finger on the pulse of what's going on in the clubhouse as it relates to Ron's leadership.
  3. Here's the link to McCalvy's article on the situation if you haven't read it by now: http://m.brewers.mlb.com/news/article/95157658/brewers-general-manager-doug-melvin-miffed-by-breakup-with-triple-a-affiliate The Sounds ownership had grown tired of the Brewers fielding subpar teams in recent years. The Brewers had tried to rectify that situation in 2014 with some success, especially at home. It's a valid concern, but the way they went about changing affiliations wasn't the right way to do it and Melvin has every right to be irate. If you're thinking about switching, you should at least let your partner know. Don't leave your old partner hanging when you suddenly become attractive and a prettier partner asks you to dance.
  4. Well, now things are picking up. Anheuser-Busch has released a statement saying they have concerns over how the NFL is handling the recent player issues. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2014/09/16/nfl-anheuser-busch-sponsor-domestic-abuse-sponsor/15726217/ Very interesting.
  5. That happened just this past season. Peterson had just found out that the boy even existed a couple months prior and had yet to meet him in person. There's now a second report that he was investigated for another abuse that left a scar over another of his son's eyes, but wasn't charged. I believe i've read a report somewhere that he's fathered children with at least 5 different women.
  6. The 49ers did not deactivate Ray McDonald for last night's game, and have been widely criticized for it. However, the Panthers did deactivate Greg Hardy (arguably the biggest "star" amongst Rice, McDonald & Hardy) for yesterday's game and are taking more time to decide whether or not to continue (wheras the Vikings decided that Peterson's "indefinite suspension" should just last the weekend). The CBA limits how many times they can do this, so their hands will be tied if the NFLPA decides to stand up for Hardy.
  7. I had seen an article written by another comedian (and can't find the link now) that really articulated why depression is so rampant among comedians. It's really the rule, rather than the exception. They naturally crave attention and companionship, and fear being alone. Basically the gist was, "show me a comedian and I'll show you someone with a messed up childhood." The author referenced the death of Chris Farley as an example. His last words were "Don't leave me!", which he spoke to a prostitute that he had hired to keep him company (as he often did) after he collapsed on the floor. She wrote him a nice note about what a good time she had, and stole his watch and left him to die alone. Adored by millions of people, yet he had to pay hookers to keep him company. Williams was such a fixture on the USO tours, which many people don't know about or realize. I think he's spent more time with our troops overseas than any other performer. Hopefully that's part of his legacy that people will remember when they think about him.
  8. That's part of it, but the main reason people are this upset is that he lied about having the tape. Sort of like the whole Braun saga, the lie is worse to many people than what was done. That's the problem - we don't know with absolute certainty that he lied. You (and many other people) are assuming he did. He very well could have been unaware that his office had the video. How I expect this to play out is that someone in the league office will end up taking the fall for this (with a nice severence package), but Goodell will remain in place. The people he truly answers to (the owners) have been extremely happy with his ability to make them even more filthy, stinkin' rich. The Bills just sold for over $1 Billion (and the sale is contingent on them having to stay in Western NY). Just a few years ago, only the Yankees and Dallas Cowboys were thought to have values in excess of $1 Billion before McCourt sold the Dodgers for over $2 Billion.
  9. A Bill Hall type player (strong vs LHP with decent power and above-average defensive abilities at 2B/SS/3B) would be an ideal platoon partner for Scooter. Sort of like the infield, RH version of Gerrardo Parra. I don't want another player like Weeks and go into a season with two guys that are strictly 2B on the roster.
  10. In regards to whether or not Melvin is on the hot seat, I think you'd have to ask the question, "Whose idea was it to 'go for it' on multiple occasions?" Whose idea was it to sign Suppan? Did Doug Melvin really think that was a smart baseball move knowing they were a couple of years away from really contending, or was that Mark wanting to make a splash to show that things were going to be different? Whose idea was it to trade for Sabathia? Obviously the merits of this move have long been debated and both have valid points. Whose idea was it to trade away the future for 2 years of Marcum & Greinke and then let Fielder walk, rather than trade Fielder and add to an already strong farm system that was just about to bear fruit? We don't really know the answer to those questions. But we know that the combination of Mark & Melvin right now is generally a recipe that will produce a mediocre product with short-term fixes because it's pretty evident that the team is avoiding any sort of complete rebuild that would impact ticket & merchandise sales.
  11. This - and I don't think enough emphasis has been placed on this. If the appeal for Braun had taken place as intended (meaning we never find out about his failed test in the first place), we're talking about 14 players being suspended without a single failed drug test. That's pretty alarming, and should be fairly obvious that the players who are cheating know how to beat the system.
  12. This is the one that kills me. "What if" the Yankees didn't sign Tex and we got the Yankees 1st round pick instead of the Angels and drafted Trout? Trout-Gomez-Braun outfield? We ended up with a higher comp pick that season for losing Brian Shouse. And got nothing for Ben Sheets due to his injury.
  13. Just curious - where are you hearing 90 players? Depending on the number of retirees and minor leaguers on that list, you're talking about a very substantial percentage of active major leaguers. Even if you assume that only half of them are current major leaguers, that's still an average of one or two players per team. The MLBPA might not have put up much of a fight against the '13 suspensions, but if MLB tries to suspend 5+% of it's current membership, I have to think that they will face a much stiffer battle this time around. This may drag on for a while (especially since it's now a federal investigation) - and I'm wondering if Bud would rather ride off into the sunset and let his successor deal with this right off the bat (which may not be up to him if they don't end up with the evidence in a timely manner, or at all). Remember - MLB had to purchase stolen documents the last time around to nail the '13 crew after the Feds specifically told them that those documents were hot and it would be illegal.
  14. This transaction has confused me. It was reported as Carp being DFA'd, which means the team has 10 days to work out a trade before placing him on waivers. But a couple of days later, he's claimed by TEX, which doesn't make sense if he was DFA'd. Unless the 10 days is a maximum period allowed and the team can just say "eh, screw it" and place him on waivers at any time.
  15. Yes, that's exactly it, though I don't remember if it's based on this season or the last. Boston will first have ten days to try to trade him before he hits waivers, and they've been trying to trade him actively over the past few weeks, so I would think the asking price would be minimal (plus you'd get him immediately rather than waiting ten plus days for the waiver process to sort out). I'm pretty sure at this point of the season, the current year's standings are in play. And I'm pretty sure he must clear the entire AL before the NL teams even get a crack. So he would have to pass by the likes of Detroit, Oakland, etc before even making it to the Cubs for example.
  16. Well, he's dirt cheap now if they want to make a move to get him instead of waiting for the waiver wire process. They'd likely have to DFA Overbay to clear room for him.
  17. Boo. Gibson seems to be obsessed with Braun and high-fives his pitcher after he's ejected. And Towers openly talks about the need for hitting opposing batters. And all that happens is an insignificant fine for the pitcher (who probably has a donation cup placed in the clubhouse since everyone in it seems to be on the same page)? That's complete crap. Now I really, really wish Lucroy had hobbled around the bases after his grand slam while give the fist pump rounding second. EDIT: Apparently, the D-Backs probably did "pass the hat" around (from the article):
  18. If Molina had the same stats playing on a first place team, he's likely the runaway MVP candidate.
  19. Lucroy better get in on the player's ballot, because I'm not liking his chances with Matheny making the final call. Maybe that's how he's planning to "get even" after nixing the retaliatory ad from Fox Sports Midwest. My favorite part of his quotes about the ad were how his players have "worked hard to get there" and have "earned it" while saying that accolades like that "aren't just handed out." Ummm, that's exactly how the starters in the ASG are determined. It's a popularity contest that sets up larger markets for success in the voting process.
  20. Thanks. Now I know how Michael Scott felt when he was introduced to YouTube. I will get nothing done at work the rest of the week.
  21. I would have been 13 years old. My dad and I were probably listening to the Brewer game in the barn as we were milking the cows, and caught some of the footage on TV when we got back to the house. I was a huge fan of SNL at the time, and the subsequent "Trial of the Century" provided some of my favorite moments from the show. Only years later (thanks to the internet) did I realize that Norm MacDonald ultimately lost his job because of how unrelentless he was in his pursuit of portraying OJ as a murderer in his Weekend Update bits. I also remember being coralled into the school library for the verdict, which at the time seemed weird, but maybe they wanted it to be a "remember where you were when this happened" moment (mission accomplished). I think several schools did the same thing with the George Zimmerman trial last year. I just thought it was weird at the time since it was a murder trial, not the assassination of a sitting president or something of that magnitude. But at the time we didn't understand all of the racial undertones, which was a completely foreign concept at our school since it was nearly 100% white kids, in a nearly 100% white town, located at the heart of the whitest congressional disctrict in the U.S. The closest thing we had to a racial divide was how we (the Scandinavian & German Lutheran kids) didn't care much for the Polish Catholics that lived in the next town over.
  22. Do the rules change once the season starts? The Cubs selected Josh Hamilton from the Rays in the Rule 5 draft, and then immediately traded him to the Reds for cash (they had a pre-draft arrangement). If Wang must indeed clear waivers, he will have zero trade value since any team that is interested can claim him for free and assume his roster situation. Somebody make a flowchart!
  23. Dexter would lose. He needs a three week head start to make sure his victims meet Harry's Code.
  24. Well the letter I received today as a response to our Intent to Vacate notice at the end of June expressly said that they will withhold from our security deposit if we don't have the carpets professionally cleaned, which is still considered to be illegal. But if the requirement to clean the carpets is no longer being interpreted as the owner's responsibility and I have to do it anyway, it's a moot point I guess.
  25. You have to be on the MLB roster (or MLB Disabled Lists), not just the 40 man roster for a player to accrue the service time that counts towards your arbitration/free agency clocks. After this season (if he stays with the Brewers) he will have one year of service time. If he is optioned to the minors in 2015 and 2016 and then makes the club in 2017, he will still only have one year of service time. In that scenario, he still has two pre-arby years, and then 3 arbitration-eligible years.
