  1. Abreu has set all-time rookie records for the month of April in HR (10) and RBI's (31). http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/28/jose-abreu-sets-all-time-rookie-records-for-homers-and-rbis/
  2. I haven't, so I'll ask for clarification.
  3. This is the entire opinion, I had quoted only a portion in my original post from the website I was looking at it. So it looks like an about face from previous rulings... sort of. While the provisions no longer seem to be illegal, they still can't withhold or deduct from your security deposit if you don't pay to have the carpet professionally cleaned. Is that correct? Clear as mud.
  4. We sold our home in February and are living in an apartment while our new home is being built. It's been a while since we've lived in an apartment, but the following lease provision regarding carpet cleaning made me raise my eyebrows. I told the representative that I believed this provision was illegal at the time of the lease. She just smiled and said, "You'll have to take that up with the landlords." Provision: I'm a CPA so my law knowledge is not that extensive, but my research skills are pretty good. From what I can tell (and other landlords have told me), this provision is absolutely illegal. As long as we don't harm the carpet beyond "normal wear and tear", we should not owe anything for any sort of carpet cleaning at all. Here's the Attorney General's interpretation. It seems to indicate that the provision itself does not make the lease void, but the landlord is not allowed to deduct these expenses from the return of the security deposit. But could they try to send me a bill instead?
  5. The argument that we'd see a large increase in merchandise revenue by switching to the retro logo/uniforms full time is terribly flawed. Nearly everything in terms of merchandise is available in both. Why on earth would you limit yourself to one choice, especially when this thread is a perfect example of the rabid support that both logos have? People aren't going to suddenly decide they need to update their wardrobe because one logo "won out" over the other, especially if they really liked the logo that was eliminated. It's incredibly short-sighted. As ugly as some of you feel the gold uniforms are, there is still a section of the fan base that absolutely loves them. If they weren't selling 'em, they wouldn't be making 'em.
  6. It already did happen. I think one of the first games this season had a scenario where Bochy used a challenge unsuccessfully, but then a subsequent play at the plate in that inning was blown by the umpires and he had no recourse. MLB gets it wrong in the same fashion that the NFL gets it wrong. The NFL puts the onus on the coaches until the 2 minute warning. MLB puts the onus on the managers until the 7th inning. The onus should always be on the officals/umpires to get the calls right. The "challenge" system should be done away with and implement the system you have from the 7th inning on and make it effective for the whole game. It takes far less time for them to review the calls and get it right than it does for a manager to argue a call, get ejected and then throw a hissy fit. I don't buy the "slows the game/kills momentum" argument at all.
  7. http://fcdn.mtbr.com/attachments/passion/865963d1391025291-bike-accent-colors-full-stealth-i-love-gold-goldmember.jpg The A's yellow color for a jersey would only work with the retro Ball & Glove logo, since it's the same yellow, in my opinion. That color of yellow doesn't work with the current scheme.
  8. Over the past few years, there were two main theories of how the show would end. 1) The mother is dead. The theory behind that being the story was told entirely from Ted's perspective. The mother isn't there to interject, and this theory was really cemented in the penultimate episode when the mother tells Ted that she doesn't want him to be someone who lives in his stories, and to go out and experience life. He also gets choked up after she says, "What kind of mother wouldn't show up for her child's wedding?" hinting at a terminal illness. The finale was no surprise if you picked up on some subtle hints. 2) The other theory was that Ted was dead. This would have been explained by the fact that you have a narrator (Bob Saget), instead of Ted's voice. He's already an adult, this isn't "The Wonder Years." The narrator could have been a lawyer, or family friend who was reading this story to his kids shortly after his passing. That was obviously a red herring, and was never explained. Ted's real voice just took over the story over the last few minutes. It's been almost a week, and I'm still not sure how I feel. I knew what was coming, and hated it, but sort of made peace with it when you think about the fact that the mother is also reunited with her first love (Max) who died suddenly. I still find it weird that Ted and the mother waited so many years to get married when that goes 100% against who Ted was the whole series.
  9. The guaranteed money in Japan must have outweighed the meager minor league deals he was attracting here. I still can't believe that he's only 31.
  10. We're thinking about dropping DirecTV and replacing our $115 a month bill with a streaming service for substantially less. Really the only thing we'd miss (outside of losing FSN & the History Channel) is having a DVR that could record and playback TV shows in HD. Are there any recommendations on a DVR with a digital tuner that you could use to record network shows, and which streaming services (Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon, Redbox Instant) you prefer? We have two boys (3 & almost 2) so an adequate library of children's programming would be a must.
  11. [sarcasm]Well now that explains the obvious sabotage by the grounds crew in the NLCS. Obviously there was something going on the with mound that made Marcum give up all those hits.[/sarcasm]
  12. Better minor leagues, maybe.... but the Yankees can spend up to half a billion a year and not lose a penny. Clearly they will always have the brightest future in the salary-capless MLB. This. It's hard to predict their future rosters since a handful of those players are currently on other teams, probably turning down team-friendly extensions and holding out for a big pay day.
  13. You have to accrue six full seasons of major league service time to become a free agent, so they still hold his rights for six more years.
  14. Absolutely! This movie makes me cry from laughter every time I see it. Some great minor appearances in this movie as well from Farley, Chevy Chase and especially Don Rickles. Rickles was great: "So there you are, tubby. Look like a bucket of lard on a bad day. You baby gorilla. Why don't you work in a zoo, and stop bothering people? Got a call yesterday from Baskin Robbins. They said that they're down to only five flavors. You're swelling up as I talk to you." Every time my wife eats ice cream, I have to fight the urge to speak directly to her stomach and say, "Hello, ice cream! Having a good time?" Another great moment is when Pops reveals himself to be Mitch's dad via photographic evidence. "Did Sam's mom know you we're cheating on her?" To which Pops replies, "Of course! Who do you think took the picture?" Also, this movie was Chris Farley's last, and I believe it was the directorial debut for Bob Saget.
  15. I don't know what an acceptable apology is from Braun, but it definitely isn't going to be one that's either a) written or b) implies that he was only doing it to get healthy enough to help win a championship for a long-suffering fan base.
  16. And Yuni's unmitigated reign of terror on this team persists.
  17. Could have been just about anybody. He would clearly help teams in contention, but could also be appealing to an opportunistic club that would like to get him cheaply (in terms of players for assuming the contract) and then flip him down the line for a better return than what waiver restrictions allow.
  18. I think the answer to why Yuni is still here getting regular playing time with such a horrid OBP is obvious. More Yuni = higher draft picks, because we are obviously worse off with him on the team. Those sly devils.
  19. Selfishly, I wish the Brewers would use the money saved on the remainder of this season's salary and hold a Hernandez style jersey exchange similar to what the Patriots did. Obviously I'm not comparing the crimes of the two individuals, but I have no desire to wear any Braun gear for the foreseeable future. And as anyone living outside of Milwaukee can attest, non-Braun Brewer jerseys sold in stores are virtually non-existent.
  20. Sounds like 3B is a new position for him. He's played predominantly 1B, but only made 5 appearances there this year. Sounds kind of like what we did with Hart when it was apparent Fielder was going to be the guy there.
  21. Sounds like the Rangers are close to a deal for Garza, and are rumored to be giving up Olt, CJ Edwards and Neil Ramirez per HBT.
  22. This is exactly what I think we should do. It's the only viable way to accumulate picks in our situation.
  23. I'd redirect your anger at the laws. I don't have any issue with what the jury came up with considering the evidence presented and how the Florida laws are currently written. Doesn't make it "right", but I didn't see how the jury could find him guilty based on what was presented during the trial. Meanwhile in an unrelated case in Florida, a woman was sentenced for 20 years for firing a weapon in the air as "warning shots" to keep her abusive husband at bay. Had she aimed the gun at her husband and shot him (maybe even have killed him), she could have argued for the "stand your ground" protection and may have walked free. The laws in that state are wacky.
  24. To paraphrase Jim Gaffigan, why is it that athletes are so quick to thank God for their success, but never blame him when things go wrong? "Yeah, I was doing great. I had a clear shot at the endzone - until Jesus* made me fumble..." *Disclaimer - not a religious joke, it's observational humor.
