  1. People also used to get banned for coming off as condescending and name calling.
  2. Are you close to Green Bay? Maybe we could carpool.
  3. I tried, but I can't make a selection on my iPad.
  4. Ah, memories... The thread I remember most fondly was when we shipped Junior Spivey to Washington for Tomo Ohka, which paved the way for Rickie Weeks to be called up. His arrival was one of the first for the long-awaited prospects (Hardy, Fielder, Hart) that we hoped would bring our long suffering franchise to new heights. I still remember that a poster had a signature around that time that said Remain calm... Help is on the way! I wish the current farm system gave me that sense of optimism, but it doesn't.
  5. From my experience, as much as 50 lbs in your first ten years after high school.
  6. My money is on him just starting to call him "Yanky" We watch most of our tv shows with closed captioning on since we have small children and would rather not blast the sound. The CC text already translates "Bianchi" to "The Yankee".
  7. I believe sometime around 2004 when I was still in college at UWSP and served in student government, the Board of Regents passed what we called the "Lechner Rule". It basically stated that if a student had over 150 credits and had yet to graduate, your future tuition costs doubled.
  8. Yeah, they're called doctors. Personally, I went for 8. Six years and three majors at UWSP and found out that a business admin, history and social science degrees will land you a terrible job as a manager for Walgreens. After two years of that I re-dedicated myself to an accounting degree at UWGB which took another two years but was totally worth it.
  9. After resting his arm, it looks like Jason Motte will need to have Tommy John surgery anyways effectively shelving him for 12-14 months. I cannot believe that his UCL would be so unclassy as to not heal itself.
  10. FWIW, there is reduced-sodium V-8. Ya Hawing, I know I know. My wife informs me of that too I think I'll give it a run, but it's not as good as the real thing. At least I'm having this debate instead of weather or not I should be drinking diet or regular Mt Dew, or something like that. A few years ago I compared labels between regular V-8 and the reduced sodium variety. I'm almost positive that everything, not just the sodium, was 50% what the regular was (i.e., Vitamin C was 50% of recommended daily intake vs. 100%). I walked away with the assumption that they apparently just cut it with water, maybe added some flavoring to make up for it and was passing this off as "reduced sodium." They do the same thing with kids juice, like "Motts for Tots." It's just regular grape juice that's been watered down so they can say "50% less sugar than regular juice!". Well, that's because it's 50% water.
  11. 4 of those 9 have been homers. The walks are obviously completely absent, but 27 out of 38 is a tremendous 3TO percentage.
  12. FWIW, you know that your Grandpa.can get arrested.for OWI on his motor-powered.bicycle, right?? Oh, shoot. Ah.. No, I didn't know that, and I feel like an idiot for not thinking about that. I screwed up on this one. He seemed pretty happy that he got it. We will see how long it lasts. I could tell him that he could still get arrested, but I don't think he'll listen. Back when I was in high school, we had a police officer explain to us before prom weekend that basically any mode of transportation where you were in control could get you an OWI, even a standard bicycle. It was well known in the community that a certain tavern regular used to drive his lawn mower down the sidewalk with a Slow Moving Vehicle sign that you typically see on farm implements, so we asked the officer if that was illegal, which he said it was. Then like typical teenagers, we decided if we could stump the expert. I asked, "What about if you were on horseback?" He replied, "Yes, you are still in control." But he had no response for, "But what if you're sober and it's the horse that's drunk?"
  13. With our closer looking like the latest incarnation of Derrick Turnbow, Can we just retire the number 59?
  14. First, Walgreens. They are my wife's employer since 2005 as an assistant manager when we graduated from college (we both started there but I left in 2008 after adding an accounting degree and passed the CPA because there is just no career advancement there). Back when we started, the pay was about $14 an hour and you had a guarantee of four hours of overtime at time and a half. Plus they had generous "promotional monies" paid if you would upsell customers on certain photo packages, so she grossed probably around $35k a year. After I left in 2008, they scaled way back on the PM's and eliminated the overtime. At the hourly rate she was at, I calculated that it was a loss of $6k gross income annually. Now, they've decided to eliminate her position entirely but replace it with a new position that has the same exact responsibilities, just a different title and a 25% reduction in pay. Her new hourly rate dropped from over $19 an hour to $14.50, so she'll lose about $10k in gross income annually this time, and will make less annually than she did as a new college grad in 2005. Thankfully the job I scored after adding the accounting degree and CPA pays twice what she makes so it won't be a fatal blow to the household income like it would have if we were both still working there. So, lesson for the kids: if you want to go to school for business, major in accounting or finance because if you just major in business admin, you'll either wind up in sales or retail management. You can do anything with an accounting degree that you can do with a business major, plus a whole heck of a lot more. Second, we are in the process of listing our home and looking for an upgrade since we need more yard and more space for our two toddler boys. We met with an agent on Tuesday afternoon, and he emailed me that night saying he had someone who wanted to see the house ASAP, so I worked my butt off to get the house ready for a showing the next afternoon. The buyer wrote up a offer that night, and we were pretty excited because we hadn't even listed the house for sale yet. The next day I tried to email our realtor (who was out of town already for Easter) the signed documents to accept the offer. Unfortunately, his inbox was full and so the documents didn't get delivered. By the time he noticed and asked me to send to another email address, I had left to pick up my kids from daycare. When I got back, he had sent another email that the buyer had changed her mind and pulled her offer. Had his inbox not been full, we would have had a binding acceptance. I was pretty upset since I feel I had executed my portion of the contract, but I guess it is what it is.
  15. [sarcasm]How come 5 years, $100 million works for them and not us?[/sarcasm]
  16. Borrowed from dlk9s after finding out Jennings signed in Minnesota. http://i.imgur.com/423QT7X.gif
  17. Now being reported as a 3 year extension, so it's not clear if that $27.5 mil is including 2013 salary or not. I liked a $7 mil average much better than $9 mil.
  18. First his ACL in 2008, and now this? Injury prone!
  19. He's a Packer HOF member for sure, but I don't think he's ring of honor worthy. His longevity and consistent production helped him get the counting stats, but he was never an elite talent. Heck, he wasn't even the best player to wear #80 in franchise history. James Lofton was. He's pretty comparable to a guy like Hines Ward, but Ward has one more ring and more impressive stats, but neither should seriously be considered for Canton.
  20. Katie Couric asked Te'o if he was gay, which he vehemently denied. Dr. Phil interviewed Ranaiah Tuiososopo, who admitted that he felt the relationship between he and Te'o was romantic (at least from hs perspective). He admitted to being gay himself, and then backtracked to calling himself "confused.". I think we're all confused at this point.
  21. The Padres jersey looks like one of those tuxedo t-shirts.
  22. There are a few things that just don't add up in light of ND's and Te'o's statements. - He claimed he met this woman in 2009 after exchanging glances and phone numbers during a loss to Stanford. His father also mentioned that she visited him back in Hawaii. Now, Te'o claims he never met in person, and the whole relationship was initiated and carried out online. It's going to lead to a Clinton-esque "depends on what your definition of the word 'met' is" defense. Either he was lying before, or he's lying now. Maybe both. - Another Samoan player from the AZ Cardinals claims he met this woman back in 2009, and is 100% real. Yet there is no record of her ever existing. It's possible she may have targeted other players as well, if in fact this is some sick prank she pulls. - This guy has been one of the biggest stars of college football over the course of his career. You mean a guy like that has to resort to internet dating? I know he's a Mormon (attending a Catholic school), so he's probably not out chasing tail like players at Texas, but he probably could find someone with similar values in person, either on-campus or nearby. It's entirely possible that he was using this lie (or internet relationship, if he were genuinely convinced it was real) as a cover for his sexual orientation (not that there's anything wrong with that) so he doesn't have players in the lockerroom wondering why he doesn't have a girlfriend. I feel terrible for making that kind of tabloid gossip accusation, but it seems entirely plausible given the presumed facts.
  23. My wife and I have a set of "Irish" twins (my youngest son is 11 months, and his older brother is 15 months his senior). I haven't really had a good nights sleep in over two years. I would definitely echo the 529 plan sentiments. Our sons go to daycare twice a week, so I take advantage of my employer's Dependent Care FSA plan (although the maximum contribution limit set by the IRS of $2,500 per child is insanely outdated - our costs this past year was $11,000, again with just two kids going two days per week). Rather than use that money towards reimbursing daycare expenses, I use that money to fund their 529's. Since the state gives you tax breaks on those plans up to $3,000 per child per year, it only feels like I have to come up with an extra grand to fully fund those. I then just pay the tuition monthly, and rack up crazy rewards points on my credit card. The daycare expenses are a bitter pill to swallow until they get older and the rate decreases, and eventually they'll be in school. I often catch myself fantasizing about what I'll do with the extra money in a few years, until my wife starts hinting about future family expansion plans around that time. Personally, that seems like being a prisoner two weeks away from release who then kills a guard.
  24. True it's not a smoking gun, but back acne is well known as a side effect of steroid use. And it was an era when a lot of players were using steroids. And Piazza went from a nothing as an amateur to the best hitting catcher of all time, in that environment? It's certainly enough to raise doubts. That's probably the weakest argument I've ever seen to connect someone to PED use. Back-ne? And his draft status is pretty irrelevant. Bart Starr was drafted in the 17th round. Tom Brady was a scrawny, average at best QB at Michigan and was taken in the 6th round. 32 teams passed on drafting Arian Foster through all 7 rounds of the draft. It's easy to raise doubts on just about everyone, but you've got to come with something a lot stronger than that.
  25. We used an early 60's Ford Bronco as our snowplow vehicle on the farm, which was manual transmission, but had a column shifter and the gear indicator in the dash like an automatic would. I was pretty confused the first time that I was on plow duty, wondering why I had three foot pedals.
