  1. HOUSTON (AP) -- The Astros acquired pitcher Dennis Sarfate from the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday for cash. The 26-year-old right-hander was 2-7 with four saves and a 4.52 ERA in 45 games, including one start, for Triple-A Nashville this year. He appeared in eight games for the Brewers in 2006, striking out 11 hitters in 8 1-3 innings. He posted no decisions and had a 4.32 ERA. Sarfate was expected to join the Astros on Wednesday. To make room for Sarfate on the 40-man roster, the club designated right-hander Miguel Asencio for assignment. Asencio, 26, was 1-3 with a 7.43 ERA in 28 games for Triple-A Round Rock this season. He also appeared in 10 games, starting nine, for Double-A Corpus Christi, finishing 1-3 with a 4.70 ERA. (added tags --1992)
  2. Jonah Keri will be going over the ROY today on Page 2 on ESPN and he should have the WARPs then. Interestingly he doesn't have Prince in his top 3 for MVP (5.9 WARP). I expect the WARP #s for Braun could be as equally unattractive.
  3. But FTJ, it IS possible to determine when an error definitely *did not* contribute to a loss. I disagree -- I can think of an example.... I think it was Philly, and in the 8th inning or so there was an error by Matt Wise, on the opposing pitcher (who was batting). The next batter was retired, and the inning was over -- however that error allowed the 4th batter to hit in the next inning who proceeded to club us like baby seals. Errors lead to higher pitch counts, and get you closer to the other team's good batters. I don't think that there is any question that defense is why our ERA is higher than it should be and we are a .500 team instead of a .540 team. I certainly can understand that an error in some situations is inconsequential, but you could say that about any stats. Of course if you wanted to go through the game logs, and use your judgment to see if any of Braun's errors where "consequential" -- to be thorough you should probably do the same with each of his 2bs/3bs/HRs, as certainly some of his hits had little "consequence"
  4. Paradies Lost: The Child Murders of Robin Hood Hills Paradise Lost 2 These are particularly good. I think that they are coming up with a 3rd installment as there have been some developments in the case.
  5. I think you're probably overstating your case there. First, how many games where he committed an error did we even lose, and how many of those could you say we directly lost because of the error? It's probably not that many, surely not "lots". I think that it is virtually impossible to take any one play, AB, or pitch -- and say we lost the game because of this one event. That being so stated, Bruan (and the Brewers D as a whole) has cost us about .5 runs per game, at some point it costs us wins. Braun's D is as epically bad as his offense has been good. His D certainly erodes away his offensive production, that said, I think he is still the clear choice for ROY. If his D was league average, it would be a blowout.
  6. Braun's VORP - 51.0 Tulo's VORP - 29.5 How could you even argue this? Braun 21 Errors and .896 fielding pct -- has cost us a lot of runs. He plays an easier position than Tulo. Brauns' Defense is far from trivial -- His defense (and the team's as a whole) has cost us a lot of wins.
  7. Ankiel had been a major league player -- it wasn't like he was some sort of minor league journeyman. I suspect he didn't do anything wrong and nothing can or should be done.
  8. Which brewers according to the media guide was going to be a fbi agent? Julio Machado
  9. Second, even if Tulowitzki's defense is average for a SS, he has a clear edge over Braun. I found myself looking forward to seeing the Brewers hit grounders his way, that kid has an absolute howitzer. I think that the biggest mismatch in all of sports would be Tulowitzki v. Estrada. I agree with Russ -- a very good case could be made for Tulo getting the ROY -- he is playing a much harder position much better, but he won't win it.
  10. On a similar but unrelated note, I was at the UNLV-UW game in Vegas last night. No exaggeration at all - about 9 out of every 10 fans there were wearing Badger gear. They were saying on the telecast that UNLV has had in its history 4 FB sellouts -- all with the Badgers. They also said some Badger fans bought season tickets to ensure they had seats
  11. Wow what a utterly wrong statement. Has he not lived up to our lofty expectations? No but to say he is horrible disregards stats. Rickie does not have a great batting average but he does have an excellent obp which is important for a leadoff hitter. His OPS is approaching 800 which is not "horrible" as you say. Players who have worse stats than Rickie currently starting at 2nd in MLB: Luis Castillo, Marcus Giles, Adam Kennedy, Ronnie Belliard, Kaz Matsui etc (that's just a few I could think of in the National League). To be a horrible player you would think that you would be at the bottom when it comes to stats for your position don't you? When I call Weeks a "horrible 2b" I meant just that -- Weeks is a horrible 2b, not a horrible batter. Weeks is about the worst 2b starting in baseball -- that is horrible. Now if you want to look at his batting -- he is in the bottom half (.OPS). If you look at the guys that are underneath him, there are guys like Giles, Castillo, Ellis. etc. that are great fielders, and there are guys like Biggio, Durham, etc. that are the downslope of their career. Overall, Weeks is in the bottom tier of 2b, esp. when you factor in fielding. About the only thing I think Weeks does well is run and draw walks. If he could not draw walks, he would not be in MLB. He is young and has been injured, so I think it is reasonable to extend him some degree of a "mulligan", but I think his peak, is going to be somewhere around "serviceable".
  12. Jack Lazorko was a goalie He sucked
  13. I think if you told Carrottop that he had to give Weeks props, he probably would have assumed you meant an obscenely oversized glove, and a bat without a hole in it.
  14. My point is that Rickie Weeks is going to be a great player for this franchise and that his wrist was the reason for his bad 3/4 season. If you say so -- he is a horrible 2b. I think he could be serviceable, but he has a long way to go before he is even solid, let alone great.
  15. Yeah, he is still lost in the field -- He has a ways to go there
  16. I will be watching primarily the Steelers/Browns flipping between NFL games, probably listening to the Brewers on the Radio Honestly -- I prefer MLB on the radio, esp. the Brewers.
  17. It's just ridiculous. I think Wise should get off this team as soon as possible, and latch on with a team that actually realizes and appreciates the fact that he's better than the aforementioned garbage we're trotting out there now. Wise should put in a call to Balfour
  18. The Brewers, who haven't posted a winning season since 1982, Only missed that by 5 seasons.
  19. I have never had a problem in 4+ years, but your situation does suck
  20. I predict that Chris Capuano will get a big somewhere down the stretch. I Disagree. I think Capuano will get a big something down the stretch.
  21. Ask your mailman if he has seen any good movies lately
  22. I live in a town of 900 people or so -- I put the movie in the mail Mon., and usually I get the replacement Wed. I think though if you get something a bit more obscure, i.e. non-new releases, it may take longer as that movie may not be at your closest hub.
  23. My guess is that it may be an ID that might be used to get access into a person's home, where an unscrupulous person might put on the ID and then go up to an elderly person's house and try to get in under the guise of working for the PO
