  1. And he certainly has been very unlucky, too. I'm not denying that. But this is a pennant race. You can't afford inaction right now. While Suppan has shown signs of life at times, Cappy has been crappy pretty much since May. Look, I am all for beating up Ned Yost, but I think any sort of finesse pitcher is going to struggle for the Brewers, regardless of whether they are pitching out of the rotation or in the BP. Vargas has been struggling just as much, has less of a track record and generally has more problems going deeper into games. The same can be said for Bush as well.
  2. Yeah -- We knew Braun was going to struggle at 3b, in a more ideal situation, we still have Koskie playing 3b, and Braun gets to work out some kinks in Nashville -- he just needs more repetition.
  3. Gee, I wonder how the media and others are going to blame this one on Vince McMahon? They will read the autopsy, and follow the drug trail.
  4. So, teams will work around Braun to face the NL home run leader? No, of course not -- but teams and MLB pitchers will make adjustments and find some holes in his swing. I think something in the 280-310 range is what I would expect for 2008.
  5. While I agree with AL, that Linebrink will be cheaper than Cordero -- and I agree with Ennder, if Linebrink is able to help keep our sinking BP together he will have been worth it, -- his overall stats do not scream "extension" to me.
  6. Hoyt Wilhelm threw a no-no -- I am sure of that -- I am sure others have done it.
  7. I am going to the game tonight -- I will be the fat guy with the boy.
  8. Cooper's year in 1980 was insane -- Outshadowed by George Brett's career year -- but probably should have gotten more attention than it got.
  9. Plus, aren't there tons of Brewers' fans (not me included) who constantly complain that we aren't playing small ball and that we rely on the home run too much? I think a lot of times "small-ball" and OBP get interchanged and used incorrectly. I think in the context you are referring to -- people are griping more about OBP, than they are about small-ball. I think griping about OBP is reasonable and something that the Brewers have not done very well since the AS break. I define "small-ball" as something that happens when runners are already on base (for example bunting, Sac flies, H&R etc.). OBP to me means "getting runners on base". I think overall general arguments about the merits of bunting and the such are pretty silly, as I think it is entirely a situational thing. I will say I think good teams SHOULD be able to bunt if needed -- but more often than not, I am pretty happy letting hitters swing away -- I think though if a guy like Weeks was facing a guy like Bobby Jenks tomorrow -- I would be more likely to bunt, than if Weeks was facing Steve Randolph.
  10. I would also like to throw out Tommy Harper had a 30-30 season for the 1970 Brewers -- I think the first in the AL history. I know Bobby Bonds did it later. At any rate -- quite an accomplishment for the expansion franchise.
  11. We have always have had labs in the FTJ house, even when I was a kid -- and some of them are just born to have bad hips and joints. My dad's dog is going through a lot of the same things your dog is, and is probably about the same age -- My dad's dog messes in the house all the time, and has a hard time getting around -- probably should be put down, but my guess is my dad is waiting until he is at peace with the whole thing. One thing I learned about labs, is that you have to keep the weight off of them, and not feed them table scraps -- we have a lab right now, and she is very skinny and healthy -- my dad's dog put on some weight, and that is now a big problem for her. We had a scare with our dog -- looking like it would die everytime it walked -- turned out to be Lyme's disease and was easily treated.
  12. Even if we peg the Brewers and Cubs as .500 teams going forward, the Cardinals have almost no chance at all. The Cards have 14 games with the Brewers and the Cubs -- so in August and Sep -- there will be a lot of games where if STL wins, CHC or the Crew will have lost. I question the Cards pitching -- I don't think they can rely on their pitching to win them a lot of games, if they got Mulder back, and some good starts out of their rotation -- they have a shot at catching the Cubs and Brewers, and a semi-reasonable shot at that.
  13. Team MVP sure, league MVP I doubt it. Fielder is a much more likely candidate. In the traditional sense of the MVP -- I think Braun is clearly the Brewers MVP since his arrival from Nash. In the time that he has been up he has contributed to more Brewer wins than any other player, and probably kept us in this race/first place. That said -- I tend to agree that voters look at "triple crown stats" -- depending how the Braves and Phillies finish I could see Chipper Jones, and Howard getting a lot of votes -- same with Fielder.
  14. Mench, who is getting more expensive and isn't really a righty "killer" Unless you are talking about politics or boxing, I am pretty sure Mench flat out sucks against all things right-handed -- Gross+Dillon would be a good pair of bench players for 2008.
  15. I've never been a big fan of mound visits to begin with. Why not just allow plate visits as well? I suppose the difference is a batter is not going to get tired in an AB
  16. I don't know why 'reached on error' wouldn't be included, but I guess that's another discussion for another time. I believe errors are included as PAs and are recorded/treated just like an out.
  17. Jenkins in August so far this year: Well -- Jenks would have to step it up a smidge to be as good as he was in April, based on the line you presented, however Mench is about .400 pts in August what he was in April -- so I think overall the platoon is still going to fall short (I believe).
  18. I know this is going to shock everyone coming from me, but what if they go 24-10 again? 84-65 in three weeks would look pretty good, wouldn't it? And is there really any reason they couldn't? Yep -- Gassed BP -- Sheets hurt -- Hardy & Weeks have no chance to put up numbers they did in April. If you want to bank on the "Jenks hot Sep." go for it -- I suspect though that both Jenks and Mench have seen their best production for 2007. Suppan and Vargas are not going to get the same results they got in April/May either -- Of course this is 100% my gut speculation. I certainly do not claim this to be grounded in fact. The Brewers are a young team with sucky veterans - I really don't believe that they have the stuff to turn it back on.
  19. I wont pretend to have studied shifts a lot -- I notice that they look stupid when they don't work... I will say though -- I think more thought needs to go into the type of pitcher and the type of hitter, before just blindly shifting players and looking exclusively at spray charts. For example -- I would look at a shift differently with a guy like Tbow on the mound compared to Shouse -- and I would look at a "professional hitter" especially with a pitcher like Shouse being more likely to beat the shift without bunting.
  20. I agree with Blingster -- the last thing you want to do snapping a 3 game skid is bust Rickey on that -- when I am sure Weeks knew he screwed up. I am pretty sure given their recent road woes, and Rickey's struggle that is 2007, Yost probably wants to keep things mega-positive.
  21. He had some amazing years with the Giants before the whole 'roids thing started. I guess that is the frustrating thing for me -- clearly Bonds is/was a very special player -- he did not need to get on the juice to hold down a MLB job. It would have been fun to see where he would have compared to some of the greats w/o getting that synthetic edge.
  22. Casey -- thanks-- working slick now -- Totally radical or whatever you kids say these days
  23. And who wouldn't want their picture taken with an Italian Sausage? Me -- I am dating the Chorizo -- and he is the jealous sort
