  1. Oh well -- I remain convinced that we can still DFA our way out of this slump.
  2. Well it shows that GMs aren't solely interested in screwing each other over... Harry Chiti was his own PTBNL.
  3. Yep -- I remember that trade and getting Ed Kirkpatrick -- Kirkpatrick had been traded by Pitt to Texas and then that was the end of his career -- He got into a real bad car wreck and I think became paralyzed shortly after his playing career ended. Kirkpatrick was one of the youngest guys to ever play MLB for the expansion Angels. I remember Ed Farmer (the first player mentioned in this article) pitching for the Brewers as well. He had a couple of good starts for the Brewers and then turned his career around after some injuries. I have mentioned this trade on this forum (search) in one of my quarterly sermons praising Harry Dalton. EDIT: Farmer was traded to the Rangers for Reggie Cleveland -- one of my most hated Brewers of all time -- Upon further reflection in my mind we are even.
  4. I don't think it makes you a bad fan, but calling for the firing of a manager whose team is still in first place probably makes you a non-realist Really -- you realize that "first place" is nothing more than a measure of 4 teams arranged by geography. The Brewers are 1st in the Central, Seventh in the NL, and last in some sort of stat somewhere Another bad fan http://www.courttv.com/graphics/trials/hingis/gunther_sm.jpg
  5. My kids play Oregon Trail a lot on the PC -- My son always gets to be "Trail Manager" or whatever its called, but he inevitably Yosts his posse, when he shoots all the buffalo and gives everyone in the camp diphtheria, or whatever ends up Yosting them all.
  6. Gross will bring a better OBP than Hart.
  7. I don't think so. At the end of the day, you are going to have devout fans that split on player A or manager B. -- most especially managers. Let's take Chris Capuano -- On one hand you want to support him, and cheer him on to get that elusive win. On the other hand, at some point you have to wonder if Pitcher X could give the Brewers a better chance of winning. I think it is "unrealistic" perhaps to expect a manager in Yost's situation would be fired in-season. If Doug Melvin though thought that this team has given up on Yost, I hope he would fire him -- but that is something only DM would be able to ascertain, until after it was way too late to do anything.
  8. I'm rooting for the Cubs because if we aren't going to win the division I'd rather the Cubs did than the Cardinals. Wow. I will take the other side of this coin on this. I would rather Bud Selig cancel the playoffs than see the Cubs get into it. Rooting for the Cubs (IMO) to get into the playoffs is like rooting for Xmas at my inlaws. Honestly -- If the Brewers don't win the division, they probably don't make the playoffs -- I would root for the Cards in the playoffs if Milwaukee is not represented. I think though the Cards are probably more capable of playing better baseball in Sep. (barring Soriano's return), so I understand people wanting them to lose.
  9. I wouldn't call the Sheets injury "decimating" by itself, but it's pretty significant. It is pretty significant -- but every team has injuries this time of year... Cards lost Carpenter and Mulder is still not back, Cubs are w/o Soriano, etc... Compared to 2006 the 2007 Brewers are super-healthy. With that said, I'll keep my neck out there and say they win the division. I'll keep your neck out there to and say that the Brewers will win the division. Hey, someone has to.
  10. To make matter worse, we started the season 24-10. That was a perfect storm of EVERYONE playing great at the same time. We were never that good. I think the other thing that may have inflated or skewed our hopes, was/is that we are in such a weak division. If a team is "10 games up in first place" that is probably an indication that said team is playing well, but also that the #2 and #3 teams are playing crappy. Simply said we (generally speaking) let the sucktitude of the Cubs, trick us into thinking we were a better team. I have watched a lot of sports in my life, and I know a win in April is the same as a win in September -- however, there is something very disheartening about watching a team play its worst baseball in the last 25% of the season. My hope is more along the lines that the Cubs keep performing their comedy act throughout Sep. and the Cards quit playing like seasoned veterans. With the Cards playing the Brewers 4 more times and the Cubs 8 more times, I think most Cardinal fans have to like their chances, it seems to be theirs for the taking.
  11. I think Portland has the most stripper places in the western hemisphere per capita. I don't know if strippers are your thing, or if that is part of your resume work history -- but something to keep in mind I suppose
  12. For every Warren Spahn or Bob Feller there are probably 1000 guys that threw too many innings. These guys pitched a long time, in a large part because they missed so much time to fighting Nazis
  13. Now Prince argues with an ump and gets 3 games. Isn't MLB contending that Prince "bumped" an ump? -- I don't think he is being suspended strictly for the arguing.
  14. I don't think his defense is a liability at all. He's actually made some amazing plays. It's not like he's throwing to a gold glover at 1st either. I see no reason his defense won't improve. Braun is definitely a liability on defense -- he leads the NL in errors, and has nowhere near the TCs that a lot of 3bman have had -- While fielding pct., is a flawed metric, .893 is pretty much butchering 3b. I am not sure how many runs that prices out at -- I am guess somewhere around 13-15 runs... which washes out a lot of Braun's HRs. A couple of points -- 1.) Mike Schmidt was NEVER this bad at 3rd base. He was one that improved a lot over his career, but his floor was nowhere as near low as Brauns. 2.) As historically good as Braun as been at the plate, he has been as historically bad in the field. You would be hard-pressed to find a lot of examples of a starting 3b with a fielding pct. of under .900 for a season. 3.) I agree that Prince contributes to the overall sucktitude of our defense, and doesn't help Braun (and others) out much at all. 4.) I remain optimistic that he will improve a lot, and he is young, and his offense outweighs his defense -- but certainly his defensive shortcomings are not trivial and are contributing to our losses.
  15. we are on pace to end the season with a 40 game winning streak. 40 game win streak! Whooo Hooo!
  16. Why not send Villy down, or make Prince appeal until after rosters expand?
  17. This talk of his defense is taking away from one of the most amazing season in major league history, considering this is Ryan Braun's rookie year. Well -- baseball is a game where you have to play well on both sides of the ball. His defense needs to be measured and used to evaluate his overall performance. I certainly agree that he should get better.
  18. Lee gets only 2 games more for taking a swing at someone. Ridiculous. Lee did not go after an umpire though -- A distinction probably needs to be made, and umpires probably need to be protected/respected more than opposing players.
  19. I don't mind the move, but I don't see our bullpen improving because of this either, and pitching is what worries me right now.. This was my exact reaction. This doesn't make Villy less tired or going to make Wise pitch better, or our starters pitch deeper in games, plus with Parra and/or Yo getting shut down, Spurling could be needed. That said, a 13 man pitching staff is pretty silly.
  20. My favorite part had to be "think that is called plagerism (kind of ryhmes with totalitarianism, doesnt it)". He should probably try spelling things correctly before trying out rhyming schemes (plagiarism not plagerism), maybe that's how he got it to rhyme. And I even will read stuff from that tainted place if it will make my mind think and ponder. That is a nice quote. Quit tainting our place Brian!, and quit making my mind think and ponder! -- I just want more pictures of shocked looking animals!
  21. I agree that right now Braun's Offense > Defense -- however -- I was speaking in generalities in my previous post, there is a point where the Defense > Offense, and you have to be less patient. I disagree with the last thought in this post though -- I think Braun and Fielder you can take the good with the bad -- but for most MLB players, they have to contribute defensively as well as offensively for the team to win. We can't just disregard D.
  22. I stand by Braun and some people might just need some patience. He should still be in Nashville defensively, but we didn't have that luxury. Well -- There is a point where Errors > Offensive production. I suspect that Braun will be able to play 3b down the road -- but if you are losing games because of a defensive liability -- they need to come off the field.
  23. He's going to develop defensively like Weeks...slowly at first, but then you're not going to notice him out there because he'll be making pretty much all the plays he should. I hope he develops faster than Weeks -- Weeks struggles, and his bad defense is still noticeable.
  24. Cappy's just not getting it done. I'd like to see Parra take his rotation spot for now. I didn't think Parra looked any better than Cappy last night. To lay the blame on Cappy for last night, is entirely simplistic. I am beginning to conclude that the only pitchers that would do well for the Brewers right now are guys that can K 10-12 batters a night. Cappy, Suppan, Bush and Vargas, are guys that could be replaced in our rotation -- I'm not sure Parra is going to fare any better (in a significant sense)
