  1. I'd rather have KRod and Gamel than Trumbo, Pena, and Thornton. Thornton's been solid in the past but he's 35. Trumbo will hit a lot of bombs but strikes out a ton and doesn't really get on base much. Pena too will hit some bombs and walks a fair amount but he also strikes out a ton and doesn't make a lot of contact. I guess for me it comes down to a combo of wanting to give Gamel a chance and thinking he will be better than Trumbo and the fact that I want nothing to do with Pena, especially at 8+ million.
  2. Speculation. I don't think anybody (besides MLB/Braun's team) knows the specific date and I bet they're at least attempting to keep it under wraps. Everything I've seen said that it should take place by the end of the month but even Haudricourt said today there's a chance they don't know anything by On Deck on Jan 29.
  3. Nope, I am holding out for a 25 game suspension as I've heard 50 games for a PED, 25 games for something other than a PED or possible failing to notify MLB of the medication. I could be wrong though and will have to re-read some of the posts in the other Braun forum. I think you're wrong. 25 games is for substances like marijuana. Even if whatever Braun took isn't technically a PED, it would be considered one by MLB. Basically if whatever he took wasn't a banned "substance," then it's considered a PED, at least according to the rules now. But who knows, maybe MLB/Selig would knock down the suspension to 25 games because of all the crazy hoopla and circumstances that resulted in this mess.
  4. Are you assuming Braun will be suspended or Green won't make the team? I would think one of those would have to happen before we add anybody else.
  5. They don't have to worry about a long-term deal yet. This is just for this year. And they can continue to negotiate until they actually go to the arbitration hearing next month.
  6. I'm sure there's been a few offers, just not in the range that Boras would like.
  7. That's what I've been advocating since they sign ARam. Give Gamel a day off each week with ARam at 1B and Green a start at 3B. I would also give Weeks a few days off each month since he can be prone to injury, which will open the door for even more Green starts.
  8. Well thats fair. I have a man-crush on good young pitching since it is so uncommon here in Milwaukee. I probably am too biased toward getting pitching since it has been so hard for this franchise.I will say, that no matter my opinion of Pineda or Montero, the deal still makes a lot of sense for both teams. Both dealing from positions of strength to fill a need.I think that's the best way to look at it. It makes sense for both teams. But the way you phrased it before made it sound like Pineda was nothing more than a back-end guy. You've made it known that you love Montero and don't like Pineda. From a non-biased standpoint, it helps out both teams. But I believe good young pitching is better than good young hitting so I think the Yankees got the better deal (not going to argue over semantics on whether Pineda/Montero is good/great).
  9. Really? As a 22-year-old in his first season, he had a 3.74 ERA, 3.53 xFIP, 1.099 WHIP, 9.1 K/9, and 3.15 K/BB. The AL West has some spacious ballparks but if that isn't considered a good season, especially in the AL for a rookie, then I don't know what else you expect.
  10. With the additions of Ramirez and Fielder, Green and Gamel would be blocked. Schafer is already blocked in CF with Morgan and Gomez there. Greinke and Marcum would net us some good draft picks if we let them walk to re-stock the system. The only way they would get draft picks is if they offered both a contract equal to the average of the 125 highest paid players. Greinke might not accept that but I think there's a good chance Marcum would. After everything that happened with Sabathia, Sheets, and KRod, I don't think you can automatically count on getting high draft picks.
  11. A backloaded deal for what it would take to sign Prince would cripple the team. If he wanted to average more than Pujols, he could potentially make more than 30 mil/yr in the final years if you backload it. Add to that Braun's 12/19 per year, Yo's 13, and whatever they have to pay from deferring ARam. It just won't work financially without sacrificing in other areas, most likely pitching. I like Prince and thought he was a great player but like others have mentioned, having Prince, Braun, Weeks, etc. without the pitching is the teams of 2009 and 2010. I know we have some good prospects coming up but they are still just prospects. I would much rather use the money to resign Greinke. Even if Greinke never pitches like he did in 09 and is closer to what he did last year, he's still a solid #2, which definitely has value.
  12. I don't believe that is true. The chances of K-Rod accepting arby were slim, especially when you consider how vocal he was about wanting to be a closer after he came to Milwaukee. Logic said that there was little to no chance he'd accept arby to come back as a set up man. But then the off-season began and only the Phillies and Marlins chose to spend big on closers. Based on previous off-seasons, I don't think anyone would have predicted that. And when the Padres traded for Street, the opportunities for K-Rod were pretty dried up. I don't think you can blame Melvin for this or call it a mistake. I think it was the right decision--a decision most GM's would make. There were just unique circumstances this off-season. Would I have liked to seen K-Rod's money be used elsewhere? Absolutely. But I'm not upset that we potentially have the best set up/closer combo in MLB to go with our solid starting pitching staff. Exactly. With how much KRod talked about wanting to be a closer, the fact that Boras was his agent, and how many teams seemingly needed a closer, it wasn't a bad decision. It just so happened that teams (besides the Marlins and Angels) decided not to spend a whole lot this offseason. And like Crew said, we now have one of the best 8/9 inning combos in MLB.
  13. Isn't Gamel "just a prospect" and "far from a sure thing to succeed" as well? Not as much as those others. Gamel has proven that he can play at a high level in AAA. Jungmann and Bradley haven't pitched professionally yet, Thornburg has only made it to High A and Peralta has made 5 starts at AAA. Obviously Peralta has "proven" himself the most out of the pitchers but I still think he could use at least another half-season in AAA. Plus, I think pitching prospects have a higher fail rate compared to position players anyway.
  14. I read that Clay actually pitched Creative about making himself an indestructible heel. Then he left to film a movie and WWE apparently thought Mark Henry would be better in that role. I think it would actually be cool to have two monsters like that who eventually meet but apparently the Funkasaurus is better. I chuckled a few times but would've liked him better as a beast.
  15. Anybody who thinks the Brewers would (or even could) give Prince 5 years at 25/yr is kidding themselves. It's reality and we need to accept it. Sure they could trade a few guys to make it work for this year but there are multiple guys signed for 10+/yr in the next few years. Nobody knows for sure what the new contract will bring but either way, it doesn't change the fact that we still have the smallest market in baseball. A $100 million payroll is likely tops and I don't even know how long that would be sustainable for. To think they could afford $110-$120 million for a few years is crazy, unless Attanasio is willing to lose a lot of money.
  16. Nobody will be able to answer for sure unless they work in the front office. I would assume there will be no more major moves (i.e. signing Prince) but I'm sure a few veterans will be signed with invites to spring training like Melvin does every year. I also think we will have a better idea of what to expect once the Braun/Aoki situations are figured out as well.
  17. I'm usually a year behind all games since I wait to get them cheap. I'm playing L.A. Noire now and am about halfway finished. My brother did get Arkham City for xmas so I will play that when I finish up LAN (I got AA for xmas last year and thought it was awesome). Then I still have Fallout 3 to finish which I got last year, as well as Fallout: New Vegas which I got this year. And I still want to eventually get the last two Assassin's Creeds after beating the first two. I don't even want to think about Skyrim yet since I've done like 3 separate characters with Oblivion and I know I would never play any other games if I got it.
  18. Maybe he was taking some new medication to get that awesome hair.
  19. I don't think it's that bad. While I would like to see some Japanese scouting, the best guys from over there usually cost the most (with posting) so the Brewers usually wouldn't have a shot at any of them anyway (until there's an international draft). Melvin made basically a low, no-risk bid. If he doesn't win, no big deal. But he happened to win with a small bid and now has a chance to sign one of the best Japanese hitters (ever?). I'm sure they have a lot of tape on him and probably already have an idea of what they want to offer him. They're probably just doing their due diligence by seeing him in person.
  20. You don't pay 2 something million just to negotiate with a guy if you don't think you can sign him. I would vomit in my mouth if the Brewer'signed Derek Lee to play 1B. Gamel will be just fine there and cheaper. Lee would be a horrible move. They already signed one ex-Cub in the twilight of his career, and you want another? You do realize that they don't have to sign him right? I mean they only lose the $2.5 million if they actually sign him, otherwise they get it back. I think Melvin just took a shot on a small bid and won. He even said they haven't really scouted him much so they're going to bring him to AZ to get a better look at him and then think about offering him a contract. I want them to sign him but it's not a foregone conclusion at this point just because they bid on him.
  21. Blasphemy. Cardinals fans are easily the best.
  22. Curious why you think this...He only hit 4 homers in nearly 600 AB last season. Even though he hit double digits for the rest of his career, outside of Matsui and Cecil Fielder, power in Japan has never really translated well to MLB. If Ichiro and Fukudome are comparables, neither has shown much power in the states. I've heard a lot of people say that Ichiro could've hit like 25-30 HR if he wanted to. He would've had to sacrifice a lot of batting average however, so he chose to focus on that instead. I've heard Ichiro hits some bombs in BP so he has the power. I just think Japanese players in general focus on batting average and "slapping" the ball as opposed to trying to hit home runs.
  23. Don't get me wrong, I don't want this to be the case, but with the slow/no news coming anymore this offseason due to the budget being maxed out I thought we could use a little pot stirring. Umm didn't we just win a bid for "the best Japanese hitter since Ichiro" like three days ago? I don't think that's slow or no news. It's not even January, there's still a few moves that will most likely be made. I get that you're just trying to start a discussion but I don't think we need to start talking about being sellers at the deadline. To me that implies already giving up and selling off multiple pieces. On the other hand, if you want to discuss which players you think could be traded for the best value, then do that by all means. The Corey Hart thread is kind of doing that already with him. I just hate talking about being sellers at the deadline when there's still two months until spring training. That being said, I would trade just about anyone if they made us better, either now or for the future.
  24. Absolutely. That's why I said earlier that I was hoping that that wasn't their goal.Actually, I think if a team doesn't sign the guy, he can be re-posted. I'm not positive though but it would make sense to allow Japanese players to actually be able to play for someone.
  25. Can we stop pumping this misinformation? He has an .808 OPS in the 5-hole and an .850 OPS in the 6th hole. Considering his career OPS is .821, I'm not sure where this idea comes from, other than everyone remembering his injuries and horrid slump in 2008.It's not technically an inability to hit there. He just claimed that he doesn't want to and he only wants to hit like 1st or 2nd. I don't know why he says that though because this was really the first year where he struggled hitting in the second half of the order. He had a .786 OPS hitting 5th in 08, .793 5th in 09 and .924 6th in 09 (while doing worse hitting 1st and 2nd), 1.091 6th in 10 and only .814 2nd, and finally .752 6th this year with .917 1st and .991 2nd. Obviously these sample sizes vary but I think he's just being stubborn and wants to leadoff. He's actually done well hitting 5th/6th and that's where he should be hitting. Another reason why I don't care for him much.
