  1. Then why didn't the Brewers win anything before this year? They've always been an all-power/no pitching/defense team. This year they finally got the pitching. They have a chance to upgrade significantly at defense with Reyes (not that Reyes is amazing, just that Yuni was so bad). I want to get away from the all power/no defense type players that we continue to run out there and start focusing on pitching and defense. Nobody's really saying that Hart sucks. Just that it's easier to find a good OF than it is to find a good SS. I'm not saying we should go all in for Reyes but if we needed to trade Hart to get Reyes (at around 5/85), I would do it. Personally, I think we could keep both and trade Wolf to free up some money. Whether we could actually get Reyes for that amount is another discussion.
  2. Everything I've read indicates that there will be a $100 million+ fee to get Darvish. Dice-K cost a $50 million posting fee plus his $50 million contract. No way should the Brewers invest that much money in someone who hasn't proven anything in MLB. Greinke would likely cost less so you might as well lock him up if you're going to spend that money.
  3. This is how I feel. At some point, you need to give your homegrown, cheap guys a chance to play. Craig, Jay, etc. may not be all-stars but they are solid, useful players that contribute, without having to spend money or prospects to get them on your team.
  4. I highly doubt that would go into effect until the 2012 offseason. Since the offseason has already started and teams are starting to think about whether or not to offer arby, they can't just change the rules mid-offseason.
  5. I haven't read the comic but I know that a lot of stuff is different. I think the two rednecks weren't even in the comic (and if they were, they weren't really main characters). Kirkman even came out and said he wants to do a little George Lucas stuff with the show. In other words, change stuff that happened the first time around (in the comics). Also, I'm pretty sure that the budget was cut in half from last season (because of Mad Men) while the episodes doubled. That shouldn't really affect stuff like character development but its probably why there hasn't been as much action/zombie/kill scenes as the first season.
  6. Sanchez has over 1 K per IP. He has to cut down on the walks, but he still has the upside of a 2/3 starting pitcher. Those are the chances a team like the Royals should take. And I think they should try and lock him up for an additional 2 years at 12 million or so. They've got money to spend and teams like the Royals need to take chances. Not to mention, I think it's more likely that Sanchez has a bounce back year and returns to his previous form while Cabrera likely just had a career year. Plus, if the Royals go out and get CJ Wilson, those two take a lot of pressure off their young elite prospects so when they come up the ace of their staff isn't Bruce Chen...who by the way would also be a good idea for them to bring back for another 2 years at 12 million. This team has the upside to be a true contender in the next year or two, but it's going to take a little bit of luck in order to do so. Where are the Royals getting all this money from all of a sudden?
  7. Please tell me that Fielder is a higher ranked FA than Reyes. We lost out on a first rounder with Sabathia because of Teixeira. It would really hurt to end up with a third rounder for Fielder if the Marlins signed him & Reyes (they can't lose a 1st rounder due to their 72-90 season). Note: I also see the Marlins are talking to Buehrle. Pujols is the only one ranked higher than Prince. Even guys like Willingham, Ramon Hernandez, Capps, Kelly Johnson, and Darren Oliver are rated higher than Reyes. Might have something to do with the games he's missed over the past 3 years. Edit: After looking at the rankings on MLBTR, I think they messed up and put Reyes below all those guys when his actual number is higher than Johnson, Capps, and Oliver. But still interesting that Willingham, Hernandez, and even Cuddyer are ranked higher.
  8. I don't get it either. Marcum was a great pitcher for the entire season minus the last few weeks and suddenly it was a terrible trade. Does that mean that trading for Yuni was great because he was pretty good in the playoffs, even though he sucked all season? There were plenty of people who didn't like the trade at the time, fwiw. I didn't, & still don't, but I also like Marcum. I get that. But I'm talking about the people who say it's a terrible trade just because he struggled at the end of the year. We most likely wouldn't have made the playoffs without him so I still think it was a good trade. I was on the fence when the trade happened (even though I was a big Marcum fan) because I thought Lawrie would be a stud. But without that trade, I don't think we get Greinke and we don't make the playoffs.
  9. His defense is above average but Yuni's defense is so bad (basically range) that yes he's a significant upgrade over him. With Barmes it's not about trying to get a guy who will hit a lot. It's about getting a guy who plays above average defense and has a decent approach at the plate (i.e. not swinging at the first pitch everytime).
  10. I don't get it either. Marcum was a great pitcher for the entire season minus the last few weeks and suddenly it was a terrible trade. Does that mean that trading for Yuni was great because he was pretty good in the playoffs, even though he sucked all season?
  11. I think LoMo is being undervalued. The guy is young and a legitimate power threat. He could be a 30 HR/100 RBI guy next year. Maybe Marlins management has soured on him enough that all it would take is Narveson. If so, I pull the trigger and worry about Gamel later. If we got LoMo, then I would consider trading Hart and moving Gamel to right. As for Headley, I think he's being overvalued. I know he plays half his games in Petco but he's only got 36 career home runs. For a 3B, if you're not going to hit for power, you better be getting on base a lot. Last year was good at .375 but I don't think his career .343 OBP makes up for his lack of power. I would rather just give the job to Green (or Green/McGehee platoon), especially if it means having to give up Thornburg (I don't even know if I'd do Thornburg for Headley straight up).
  12. I don't see Melvin holding onto Fielder or trading for Greinke if the Brewers would have gotten Beachy for Cain. To me that is more of a building for the next waive of prospects versus going for it this year. So in that scenario the Brewers have nearly all of their prospects. I still think Lawrie would have been traded but for something else than Marcum maybe a starting pitching prospect.Well the Marcum trade happened first. And once they did that, I figure they probably decided they were going to keep Prince. Maybe the Braves turned down the Beachy trade or maybe the Brewers already had the Greinke trade in the works and preferred him. Personally, all else being equal, I would've preferred to just trade Cain for Beachy if that was indeed an option. But I guess we don't know for sure.
  13. Apparently the Braves last year offered Beachy for Cain and Jurrjens for Lawrie but we turned them both down. I wouldn't have done the Jurrjens but I don't understand why they didn't pull the trigger on Beachy. Greinke was good this year but Beachy was pretty damn good as well. Obviously you didn't really know what to expect from Beachy but he was still a highly regarded prospect. If we did that trade and the Marcum trade, we wouldn't have been stuck with Yuni and would've had a good fielding SS. We'd also still have Odorizzi ready to come up in a year or two and Jeffress in the pen. I would've preferred to have Beachy, Escobar, Odorizzi, and Jeffress over Greinke and Yuni.
  14. Ruptured achilles. Will probably be out until May/June and possibly even longer depending on how rehab goes. Kendry Morales was expected back at some point this year but had complications from rehabbing and missed the whole year. Different injuries but still lower legs.
  15. Already being discussed here: http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=26274/What-to-expect-in-the-offseason
  16. This should probably be in Off-Topic.
  17. I wish more teams would do this. It makes sense considering it gives you a chance to see what kinds of decisions the manager would make in a game. Also, it reminds me of the stuff they asked Billy Heywood in Little Big League.
  18. Not all of us. A lot of people wanted Sandberg to manage the Cubs this past season. The results would have been no different. Ryne may be a good manager some day but we need someone to come in and kick ass NOW. I wish him well unless he goes to the Cards. One of the names being thrown around for our manager is Mike Maddux. (Would that bother you guys as much as Sveum?) Anyway, reason being that maybe he could talk his little brother into being his pitching coach. Now THAT would make for an awesome combination. I think Maddux would make a pretty good manager. I think a lot of the Rangers pitching success should be attributed to Maddux. He basically did the same thing there that he did here, taking guys with average success in the past and turning them into pretty damn good pitchers (Doug Davis, all the closers we had, CJ Wilson, Colby Lewis).
  19. I was waiting for someone to make that joke.
  20. Our window is open a crack. If Fielder walks, and they don't bring in Reyes, it's officially closed. Total hyperbole. Assuming Gamel/Green take over and we find a competent defense and/or offensive SS, we should still be very much in the running next year. I know you don't like Greinke or Marcum but they are good pitchers. Pitching is the key and I think we'll still have enough next year.
  21. They've already come out and said he's not going to be considered.
  22. This has been answered time and again. Gamel has not gotten a chance to prove himself yet. Less than 200 PAs over basically 3 years, with the majority coming when he was 23. That is not a legitimate chance to show what he can do. His minor league numbers were great and he has a good glove. Combine his cheap contract with his potential and he's the best option the Brewers have (comparing cost).
  23. How is Matt Holliday nominated? I always thought he was pretty bad. Also, his numbers this year aren't even that great: 3 errors and only 4 assists, compared to 1 error for Braun with 8 assists and 2 errors for Parra with 12 assists.
  24. Technically worst case would be someone in the bottom half signing guys ranked ahead of Fielder/KRod. So say the Cubs signed CC, Prince, and KRod. Then the Yankees would get 2nd round for CC and we'd get 3rd/4th round for Prince/KRod (plus the sandwich picks). Obviously that's not entirely realistic but a bottom half team could sign Prince which would result in a 2nd round. And a team could conceivably sign KRod and someone rated higher than him, in which case we'd get a 2nd or even 3rd round pick only. And worst-case with Yuni is offering him arby and having him accept.
  25. Just because he's opting out doesn't mean he's leaving. He has 4/92 left I believe left on his contract but he could probably re-up for something like 6/120 and stay with the Yankees. Or he could very well leave and it wouldn't be about the big city lights. Like everything else, it is ultimately about the money. That's why he signed with NY in the first place.
