  1. I could actually see him retiring on his bobblehead day in a few weeks if he still hasn't gotten a hit by then. That would be over two months without a hit. Even if he does get a hit or two, I could see it happening. I like him but he should hang it up and just stay on as a coach or something.
  2. Chris Duffy, who was 29. And this was 2009, not 2007.
  3. This veteran stuff is stupid. Weeks, Fielder, Braun, Hart have all been in the league for at least 5 years now. Kotsay still brings that "veteran presence." Yuni's been around for 7 years. Why do you need a player who brings nothing to the table besides having been in the league for 15 years? If that was the case, we could just have Schroeder come sit in the dugout during the games. As for players that could be sent down/cut, Counsell should be cut/retire. Wilson could be sent down if you still want Counsell. Sure you risk losing him to waivers but if we're working on an upgrade at SS already, who cares. McGehee could also be sent down to work on his swing (less likely). What they should have done was put Braun on the DL after he didn't get better after a week. Then they could have called up Green to see what he had while Braun healed. Then you make the decision when Braun comes back. If Braun was healthy, then Kotsay could've been expendable too. There were plenty (and still are some) options.
  4. This is from about 3 weeks ago.: "I enjoy first base," Gamel said. "I'm a lot more comfortable over there than I ever was at third."General manager Doug Melvin said Tuesday that the club has no plans to move Gamel back to third base, where the big league incumbent, Casey McGehee, is struggling to get on track this season. "I like [first base] a lot, being involved, being able to pick up teammates by picking balls out of the dirt," Gamel said. I know Gamel started at 3rd like four days after those statements but that was for like a couple games and they sent him down saying he will take time at 3rd. Realistically though, I think the time at 3rd is to get him somewhat comfortable in case we don't upgrade, Casey still struggles, and we need him to fill in for a couple games in September. He could probably handle a start once a week there but I still think that would get in his head too much. He is not a long-term option there. Another article showing why Gamel should never play 3rd again. Gamel had an .887 fielding % in the minors. That is atrocious.
  5. I think that should be an error. I don't care how hard it was hit, it was right at him.
  6. Except that's not how it works here as the worst SS in all of baseball continues to be the regular SS on this team, with no platoon. Earlier you stated "Keep hating on him. It's heating him up. Much better than watching Wilson and Counsell play." So, you're even arguing against a platoon, as you advocate continuing to play Betancourt. But yeah, we're fine at SS I am notarguing anything. You brought up multiple players. So that is how the stats look when others have played the position. But as every other team in the league, we have a couple weak spots, and have gone the pitching route. I am happy to have better pitching which has created a couple weaker spots in the field. However this has now created a different set of things to complain about. But being in Milwaukee I don't see how we are going to have acceptable players at every position. I like the route we have taken. I think most people would be happy with the route we have taken (focus on pitching). However, we should never stop trying to improve our team when it's possible. When we have two players are playing worse than the theoretical "replacement" player, then it is probably time to think about making a switch, especially when there is a possible upgrade in the minors. People aren't asking to acquire Reyes. However, a player like Brendan Ryan (all glove, little offense) would improve the team.
  7. I think I've heard it takes about 2 years to actually get a good understanding of what a pitching coach has done. Or I could've just made that up. Either way, I don't know if there's really any way to judge so far.
  8. OPS is not the end-all/be-all. Defense also comes into play. That being said, yes 3B should be upgraded too.
  9. Keep hating on him. It's heating him up. Much better than watching Wilson and Counsell play. Not that Wilson is amazing but neither is Yuni. Don't act like he is worlds above Wilson. He may be marginally better.
  10. Just curious as to what everyone attributes their success to so far. I know people mentioned they have had an easy schedule but the Brewers have lost to some poor teams as well, especially on the road. They have some young talent but I think we have a far more talent at most positions (obviously not SS, 3B, probably not CF). Also, a few younger guys they were counting on like Tabata and Alvarez have spent a lot of time on the DL so they have quite a few young 20-somethings playing. So is it the easy schedule, getting lucky/playing over their heads, management, what? On a side not, some of their players were "thrown to the wolves" being promoted in a pennant race and they seem to be doing just fine. Why wouldn't this work with Green, who is older than some of these players?
  11. It depends on what you think the odds are. If you think the $50 and $10 are each one in a million chance, it is a bad deal. Especially if you think there is a 75% chance that the police are going to raid the place and arrest everyone for illegal gambling. I have been anti-McPumpkin for a while. I thought we should have traded him before the '10 season started. I felt the fairy godmother dust would wear off sooner or later, and I didn't want to have him when the clock strikes midnight. With that in mind, it is possible that calling up Green will be worse. What if after 15 days (or whatever the minimum time spent in the minors is) Green is OPSing .500 with horrible defense and Casey is feasting on minor pitching. Do you bring swap them back out? What if Casey can only hit minor pitching and continues to be horrid in the majors? Melvin is then in a no win situation. Then we would be in the same exact position we are now. Call up Green and give him a shot while still trying to find a solution through trade. If a trade doesn't happen, then we will have seen what Green can do. If a trade does happen, great, send Green back down if you want. However, I highly doubt Green would play both horrible defense and have a horrible offense. Maybe the same offense as McGehee but he should at least be average defensively.
  12. He never should have played over the weekend then. I said at the all-star break they should've just retroactively DLed him and he would've been gone for like 5 more days with full rest and we could've called up Boggs/Gamel/Green/etc. for another bat. I think he tried to come back too early and now this thing is just going to nag for awhile.
  13. I'm starting to think this thread should just be locked. Teams in a pennant race (and 1/2 game out of 1st) don't sell at this point. And they shouldn't. I don't think there's anything else to discuss. Even if the Brewers chance of making the playoffs is 33%, I still say you go for it because the positives (making the playoffs) outweigh the negatives (not making it, trading pieces away for prospects which may not pan out, pissing off the fans, etc.).
  14. Direct Link. Traded to SF for RHPs Henry Sosa and Jason Stoffel.
  15. He didn't call him a nerd here but in a lot of posts, he passive aggressively talks down to this board and is very condescending. Example: When Loe does it, he is getting hit around. Funny how that works depending on the pitcher. And you notice K Rod pitched the next inning. You do need to have a pitcher for all of the innings. Believe it or not, RR has an idea on who is going to pitch and sometimes it doesn't work out. And when it doesn't, Mr Internet guy had the right move that would have worked out perfectly. In this world, no runs are ever given up. And Saito pitched the night before and is not going to be overused coming off the injury. But you probably knew that Debate is fine but comments like this really start to get annoying and IMO, lessen one's credibility. We're all fans of the Brewers and should be able to have a meaningful discussion without comments like this. If that's how people want to talk, then they should go post over at jsonline.
  16. I don't know, I've seen plenty of "Bentacourts," "Bentincourts," and "Bentacrots" to think otherwise.
  17. Is there a story on the alternate spelling of T-Plush's first name? I see the 'Nyger' version on this site from time to time, and I've seen it elsewhere. (I could swear that I even remember seeing a video of Morgan from his hockey days with that spelling.) His MLB info, and his Twitter account all use the 'Nyjer' spelling. Sorry for the derail; just something that's been bothering me for months now. I think it's just a matter of a lot of people being confused how to spell his name. Not sure about the hockey days but everything I've seen says "Nyjer."
  18. But why? This is always brought up but I don't think anybody's actually answered it. I understand that people think rookies will struggle. However, will he struggle so much that he would be worse than McGehee? He currently has a sub. 600 OPS, which is just brutal. I think Green could at least match that. And even if he doesn't, he should play better defense than McGehee to make up for any struggles on offense. I could understand how the offense may not translate but the defense shouldn't be just fine. I know Green isn't a gold-glover but he should be better than McGehee. Some might also be worried about him struggling so bad it destroys his confidence but I don't buy that either. I just think at this point, why not at least give him a shot? McGehee never really proved himself in the majors until he was called up 2 years ago either and he did just fine (until this year obviously).
